MARCH 9, 1985
A gem of finest quality was waiting, one day, waiting to be seen. Cleansing water and natural forces helped it along its way to the surface. Sitting beneath dirt and rock it almost made it to the light. It almost touched the point where the human eye, a window of the Spirit could cast its gaze at its beautiful order and harmony, and wonder, why?
Why does such a natural creation stir us so, like the finest poetry, music, or art stirs us to see a truth and unity not seen before? What is it that touches our hearts, our spirits with such power?
I am sitting on a mountaintop as the ravens ride the cool updrafts from the valley below. The sun penetrates the overcast skies to the ocean surface now ablaze with light.
There, I see the gem on the glistening, watery surface. No, it is not just on the surface, the gem now appears in the heavens above, in the storm clouds as they move slowly, blown by those perpetual winds.
Can you hear and feel the cool winds blowing from the ocean and up the valley, through the hills of grass, continuing into the sage, then higher into the trees, swaying, back and forth, back and forth. The ebb and flow of wind imprints on my mind that I am not just watching, but participating with the trees in a universe of motion.
I wonder, could the gem reside in wind? I cannot see it but it touches my ears and says, "look at me, I'm free, I can go anywhere, following the natural order." Yes, that is freedom, following the natural order.
One by one, these gems of finest quality, of light appear before me and inside me. They soothe and serenade my mind and heart, for they are being true. I realize that the gem is the Spirit animating all creation. Dirt and rock become precious, like jewels.
The ordinary becomes the miraculous. Nature becomes sacred.
God is not far away, but also right here with us in the world, embedded, and seen, reflected within all Creation.
What am I as a human being? Am I a gem of light, or, am I tarnished because of the ego-conflict, the war raging inside, disconnecting me from God, Creation, and others?
We are faint lights in a world of darkness, until we recognize the Truth.
We have a gem of exquisite quality, of such unfathomable radiance inside. Yes, we each have the gem, the Truth inside but it is seldom allowed to be seen. We are so afraid, so alone.
Like the dirt and rock covering the gem that sought the light, pride, judgment, and fear keep us from connecting to and revealing the Divine Light of the Great Mystery that is working through us.
There is nothing to fear because at our very core, we are luminous gems. If we would only choose to surrender our ego in service to others, as an empty vessel, born anew, light would come to reveal all the Love and Wisdom we need to heal what alienates us.
Let the Spirit be ignited within you to heal and transform the world.
Be free and soar.
I saw a Gem today.
