New Life in a New World

Deepak Chopra - August 01, 2008

People need a way to deal with the global changes suddenly surrounding us. As often happens, second-hand opinions are gaining the most power. The vocabulary on the left speaks of positive change, a new order, rising prosperity in what used to be the third world, and creative possibilities. The right employs a darker, more pessimistic vocabulary of turmoil in the credit markets, military threat from China, the need to seize on traditional values and exclude immigrants. The basic difference comes down to embracing the emerging global community or holding tight to isolated nationalism backed up with military threats.

Yet both attitudes are second-hand, and as people take sides, passing around the same few slogans and attitudes, something important is being missed. To deal successfully with turbulent change, you have to envision a new life for yourself. Despite the instinct to contract and defend, the real need is to expand and create. Unless each of us can see a new life for ourselves personally, there can't be a new world -- or if one arises, we will be left behind. The basics of existence are up for renewal at this moment, and people are asking themselves some very basic questions:

--Can I find a new way to be happy? Americans have long been addicted to over-consumption and wastefulness -- with only 6% of the world's population, we use 30% of its resources -- and yet we consider waste to be a negligible byproduct of pursuing happiness. Is there a better way that doesn't lead to ecological contamination? Can we prosper without earning the resentment of the whole world?

--Can I find a new way to be healthy? This society leads the world in developing new drugs and surgery because we don't want to sacrifice the fantasy that a magic pill equals health. Is there a way to nurture well-being that avoids the medical system almost entirely?

--Can I live as long as possible with real quality of life? The outworn concept of old age as a time of decrepitude and inactivity gave way to "the new old age" twenty years ago, and now aging is gradually being absorbed into the human life cycle as a positive contribution, not a depressing decline. What will my place be in this new vision?

--Can I find a new way to grow spiritually? The rear-guard action in defense of organized religion mounted by fundamentalists, although loudly voiced by the right wing, is at odds with reality -- organized religion has been fading for decades in the developed world. Yet instead of seeing this as a loss, new avenues of faith have opened. How will you fulfill your spiritual yearning ten or twenty years from now?

In all these cases, the individual is far ahead of society as a whole. Every society is essentially a conservative institution. It forms a framework for personal freedom, but it cannot be expected to dictate how that freedom is best used. The new world that is being born contains as much strife and uncertainty as the old, its great advantage being newness, ferment, and clearing the stage of outmoded behavior and beliefs. In this clearing process lies enormous possibilities, but these will be defeated if you cling instead to the fixed attitudes of any faction, right or left. You are the great possibility, something worth remembering every day.

Hi Deepak,

You make some good observations. I am prompted to say any one reading this and comprehending has nothing to worry about; it is those that have not yet connected that one would be concerned for.

The speed of evolution is becoming phenomenal and that which does not evolve will no longer be.

All the models built on the old consciousness are collapsing around us. The first to implement based on the new evolving consciousness models will prosper and persist.

Collective intelligence wreaks havoc in a world built on ignorance.

Collective power is the new kid on the block.

A good example is the CEO of a major media corporation explaining the cause of dwindling advertising revenues. He had to admit people were not watching TV as much, especially the younger generations. It seems a good portion of the public has evolved past the fictional SOAP OPERA consciousness. Minds are changing and evolving rapidly.

No longer content to experience a fantasy life through some fictional character on TV that promotes many of the fictions that afflict the world; they are looking for what is a real and direct experience, to make fantasy a reality.

The game of Monopoly and ignorance is coming to an end.

Those that are watching the fictional rich on TV will probably never get to experience it because they are not out creating but are in stead subservient to others.

There is good fiction and story out there some that imparts wisdom, awareness and explores new areas of thought, but the same old plots of the old consciousness will not suffice.

In paradise it’s 20% service 20% education and 60% play travel and adventure. There is a lot of restructuring and awareness needed to get to the point, and some may not make it, but I am sure it will not be a hard to sell...

I think I would rephrase the above "but are instead subservient to the status quo."

and there is nothing wrong with being a servant if the master loves you and one serves not as a result of force but out of love for those being served.

or something like that..

Deepak
The only way to save ourself from military invasion from China is to give them ALL of our weapons of mass destruction.

The rest of your article sounds like a personal trip that everyone has to make for them self. I kinda like my road.

We are growing so fast and the faster we grow the faster we go. I'm sure we are going faster than anyone could ever imagine to imagine on they're flat earth in the middle of the solar system.
And if we are still using the same knowledge tomorrow that we were sure was right today, then we are slowin' down.

Dear Deepak,

I agree with you, every country has its challenges and worries. We have not been thinking of ourselves as human race with common objectives of living -peaceful,healthy and fulfilling life. We find even the smallest cluster of people of a particular region, cannot think beyond their own 'that' period needs. Geographical borders issues, refusal to share natural resources like water!!! is a routine. Somewhere down the line, we forget to nurture ourselves spiritually by learning from history. Common cause is non-existent,if at all there, it is brief.
We pursue spirituality only when we are old or to rise up the ladder of a social chain which has economic implications to it. For millions of people like us,enlightenment is still calling....

Dr. Chopra with all due respect your questions sounds naive in a Capitalist society (The American way of life)...

It's difficult to recognize when a paradigm shift has occured until long after it has. But the shift has already occured.

It's easy to continue to point fingers(and sometimes fingers must be pointed) but then you get lost in the raging and the ranting. It's more challenging to breath deeply and take into one's body the reality of what's happening and how quickly.

What it's about is moving into the next phase of our evolution with compassion, humility and simple kindness for Life.

Maybe if Obama wins, he will make it illegal to hold "right wing" beliefs, that will solve everything.

Thanks for the inspiration Deepak,

Cheers,

Matt Stoller: How a Real President Handles Dissenters

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sARnrGPlzDg

"The man in this video was heckling Obama in his town hall meeting in Florida about Obama's inattention to the concerns of the black community on issues like subprime lending, Katrina, Sean Bell, the Jena Six, etc. After the speech, Obama asked the heckler to pose his question, and then answered it."

"Obama tells the man that he has spoken out on these issues, and lists the legislation he pushed and the statements he made."

"It's kind of crazy and weak that both McCain and Bush refuse to deal with people who disagree with them. It's not just un-Presidential, it shows a certain lack of dignity and self-respect as a human being, an insecurity bordering on a desire for adolescent coddling.

I remember watching clips of Bill Clinton speaking during the early years of the Bush Presidency, and it always struck me, 'wow, the President does't have to be a stuttering moron'. Watching this clip gives me that same sense that, wow, we don't necessarily have to have President Idiot in charge anymore. And yes, McCain is as stupid and mean-spiritedly narcissistic as Bush, and yes, his 'I feel like Congress is treating me like those folks in Hanoi' joke will get old the fortieth time he says it.

It'll be nice to have a non-idiot in the White House, not just someone who is smart, but someone who has the basic sense of self-respect to at least pretend like he respects people who disagree with him. I can easily see Obama's 'we all have to be civil and respectful' tone getting out of hand as well, as politics is driven by passion, but for now, I think it's clear watching this clip that he's at least going to handle his job with at least some respect of the public."

Speaking of China, why worry, aren't they just doing their job creating a new life in a new world? -

updated 10:09 p.m. PT, Fri., Aug. 1, 2008
ZHENGDING, China - Behind the gray walls and barbed wire of the prison here, eight Chinese farmers with a grievance against the government have been consigned to Olympic limbo.

Their indefinite detainment, relatives and neighbors said, is the price they are paying for stirring up trouble as China prepares to host the Beijing Games. Trouble, the Communist Party has made clear, will not be permitted.

"My bet is the authorities won't let them out until after the Olympics," said Wang Xiahua, a veteran anti-government agitator from this farm town 180 miles southwest of Beijing and a supporter of the imprisoned farmers.

"It'll be nice to have a non-idiot in the White House, not just someone who is smart, but someone who has the basic sense of self-respect to at least pretend like he respects people who disagree with him".

That's great, you prefer a president who pretends to care.

I look forward to a pleasant presidency, that's what we need now.

"Speaking of China, why worry, aren't they just doing their job creating a new life in a new world? -"

Don't worry, your religious fundamentalist friends (no not the stone age Islamists) are creating a new life in a new world too...

Dear Deepak,

These questions you mention, are universal and by experience I would like to confirm to myself again my way of living in my world.

And as Derek says: paradize is in the eye of the beholder :)

Every day is a new day and I fly out to the sun.

The Intent.com is a successor to Intentblog, only now divided into more specific subjects and one is able to upload pictures, movies, etc. It will be a great paradize for those who are attracted to this way of life :)

In itself a great intention and I would like to wish you and your family and friends lots of success!

The Internet has already so much of those initiatives. that it is more and more becoming a personal experience for every day for everyone.

I can now, with my own provider, choose the background colour I would like to have to read text with a specific colour; I can subscribe to specific information I would like to read on my personal space, there are a few more services delivered to me for my monthly paid subscription to them. If I want more, I will have to pay more for it.

It is great that there are possibilities for more and more people for free, to have some personal space on the Internet and transform it exactly in that personal space one desires. It opens up whole new possibilities to be creative :)

Being inspired myself by Randy Pausch, I will go on creating my virtual 3D worlds based on that what I experience in the real world :).

Hope people will become more and more aware of their own possibilities to create and wish them so much fun in realizing it.

Love from the heartphone, always in all ways.

Hey Bonnie
It has shifted and our leaders will reflect this shift.
It is not us who will reflect the leaders but the leaders will reflect us.
I see Obama reflecting this shift. More and more leaders, even if they are just acting, are showing signs of this shift.
It doesn't matter to me who wins. Our leaders are just gages of the people, of our country and now of our world.

Things started shifting in the sixties, oh those hippies. Now I believe it is in full swing. I wrote to Richard about this a couple month's ago saying that critical mass has been reached. That was also when I started writing differently here. I no longer feet the need to push the idea anymore.

They are QandA that is why the capitalist way must be utterly destroyed: inwardly and outwardly.

O yeah! And the ones that continue to be greedy and want to keep everything they worked so hard for, inherited, or just acquired by luck can even keep their stuff and just die alone, while reclaiming all government owned lands for us, the people's use, shall be quite a heavenly start.

May the capitalist dog slavers perish and eternally reside with their master Apollyon in the deepmost pits of burning condemnation!!!!!

Woe to thee for the day draws near!!!!!

Dear Dr. Chopra,

To quote you, "In the clearing process (of outmoded behavior and beliefs) lies enormous possibilities, but THESE WILL BE DEFEATED IF YOU CLING INSTEAD TO THE FIXED ATTITUDES OF ANY FACTION, RIGHT OR LEFT. You are the great possibility, something worth remembering every day".

Granted that the current Administration under Bush and Cheney has been a horrible misrepresentation of a so-called leftist (conservative) approach to leadership - this does not mean that we should leap from "the frying pan into the fire", just because the word CHANGE is chanted. Bush in no way has followed the conservative view or approach to governing the nation. He has violated laws of fiscal responsibility as well as due process of legislation in conducting the activities of the military and allotments of foreign aid.

We do need change but, the right kind of change. We do not need another administration that leans progressively more and more towards a dictatorial rule of government. Most people are totally oblivious to the outrageous violations of proper rules of conduct currently taking place in Congress. Yesterday, August 1st, the voices of some of our representatives were silenced by an autocratic premature adjournment of Congress by the House Speaker. The subject under debate was a "Gasoline Relief Bill". The House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, desired to table action on this Bill for another five weeks (after another vacation of members). When opposition to adjournment was voiced Nancy Pelosi had the House microphones and cameras turned off. She also had the press removed from the chambers by officers. A recording of the progressing incident was played on Radio KFYI (Arizona) yesterday by former Congressman J.D. Hayworth. This is another example of the growing dictatorial actions by those in control of our government. There is little or no focus being shown towards what actions should be taken in the best interests of the people who are suffering from an out of control economic crisis.
Where is the coverage of these miscarriages of office responsibility by our "so-called representatives"? The media will not advise the people of these abuses of office.

Best Wishes,

"Betsy" S.

Dear Dr. Chopra,

I'd like to make a correction to my statement, "Granted that the current Administration under Bush/Cheney has been a horrible misrepresentation of a so-called leftist (conservative) approach to leadership ..." This should read that the Administration under Bush/Cheney has been a horrible misrepresentation of a so-called right wing (conservative) approach to leadership. I guess that this misapplication of terms defining the opposing parties is representative of how little value is found in the labeling of the battling parties. Today, they are not really so different.

To me this emphasizes what you have said about the needed clearing process and how it will be defeated by our clinging to the fixed attitudes of any faction, RIGHT or LEFT. We are the great possibility and it is up to us to eliminate the outmoded behavior and beliefs.

Best Wishes,

"Betsy" S.

Letter to Hebrew Congregations of Savannah, Georgia

George Washington

Gentlemen:

I thank you with great sincerity for your congratulations on my appointment to the office which I have the honor to hold by the unanimous choice of my fellow-citizens, and especially the expressions you are pleased to use in testifying the confidence that is reposed in me by your congregations.

As the delay which has naturally intervened between my election and your address has afforded me an opportunity for appreciating the merits of the Federal Government and for communicating your sentiments of its administration, I have rather to express my satisfaction rather than regret at a circumstance which demonstrates (upon experiment) your attachment to the former as well as approbation of the latter.

I rejoice that a spirit of liberality and philanthropy is much more prevalent than it formerly was among the enlightened nations of the earth, and that your brethren will benefit thereby in proportion as it shall become still more extensive; happily the people of the United States have in many instances exhibited examples worthy of imitation, the salutary influence of which will doubtless extend much farther if gratefully enjoying those blessings of peace which (under the favor of heaven) have been attained by fortitude in war, they shall conduct themselves with reverence to the Deity and charity toward their fellow-creatures.

May the same wonder-working Deity, who long since delivered the Hebrews from their Egyptian oppressors, planted them in a promised land, whose providential agency has lately been conspicuous in establishing these United States as an independent nation, still continue to water them with the dews of heaven and make the inhabitants of every denomination participate in the temporal and spiritual blessings of that people whose God is Jehovah.

G. Washington

hi Steve,
Just thinking of you! Blessings to you and your family.

Oh how America could benefit from statemen (and women) - of the caliber of George Washington.

:)

That Washington praised you chosen people is really great brother Shmuel (I think I read something about it before); just where is our left-wing Barabbas now because we sorely need him, I would call upon Jesus but America would assuredly do the same thing to him as Rome did . . .

Well I guess Barabbas probably could care less about us goy though either eh: darn! Us poor strangers just can't get a break anywhere.

O Trotsky Trotsky Trotsky . . .

But that "blessings of peace which (under the favor of heaven) have been attained by fortitude in war" is quite a hilarious statement considering the United States has perpetually been at war for the last four hundred years (most of them undelcared wars naturally like the hundreds year war against the Natives):

perpetually!

O well, who needs to worry about history as we have three more wars going on right now, and if we can get the Iran war under way, whoa Nelly, we'll really start having some fun.

So much for the best and brightest making up the ruling class; I am not impressed.

Anyways . . .

Hope your family is getting back on it's feet alright; God bless.

Peace

Hi derek
Re #19

I am not enthusiastic about either of the candidates. Metephorically speaking, to me, Obama represents "Oh, it will be so wonderful when we reach heaven!" (or enlightenment or satori or whatever....) McCain is the "We're still drowsy, but not totally asleep and many of us are grumpy to say the least."

Regardless of which one is elected, my feeling is that this will be a transitional presidency for the next four years. The end of one Age and the beginning of the next. Those seeds planted in the '60's will finally sprout and begin to bear fruit. :)

At any rate, it is our job to continue to wake ourselves up and meet everyone with kindness.

Hope you are enjoying this beautiful summer day.

Love

"You are the great possibility, something worth remembering every day." ~Deepak Chopra

Love, Char

Dear Deepak,

Your questions about waste and health are very interesting. I wonder at how nations can be resentful of our wastefulness, but I would imagine that to be possible if they are in need of the very things that we do waste. I am concerned about the amount of waste that is dumped into the ocean by oceanliners. When we pollute our oceans without cleaning up after ourselves, we are surely slowly destroying ourselves and our environment.

This is an interntional problem, not just a local problem.

As for health, I am concerned that our nation spends too much money on drugs and medicine to be considered really healthy. We appear to be a nation of hypochondriacs.

In fact, sorry to realize that this post is reminding me of a dream I had this morning, of the number of patients waiting to be seen by a doctor. Geezz....oh, this is not good! I will stop now. I am convinced though that the medical profession itself encourages ill health rather than teaching preventive medicine and fostering healthy mental and physical attitudes.

Healthy mind, healthy body! Oh dear! Thanks for reminding me of a very bad dream or nightmare...waiting for a doctor has to be a nightmare after all...

Well, like Mark Twain said in one of his famous short stories, Go and dream better dreams... let me do that now. Thanks for the lesson here...waiting in a doctor's office ain't Heavenly, is it?

How to Deal with Global Changes

People need a way to deal with the global changes suddenly surrounding us. As might be expected in such a period of upheaval and rapid shifts, the usual familiar sectors of opinion seem to be exercising the most power. The right, for instance, is currently employing a relatively dark, pessimistic vocabulary of the following: turmoil in the credit markets, military threat from China, the need to seize on traditional values, and the need to exclude immigrants. The vocabulary on the left is speaking of the following: rising prosperity in what used to be the third world, positive change, creative possibilities, and a new order . The basic difference here, it seems, comes down to either (1) holding tight to isolated nationalism that is backed up with military threats or (2) embracing the emerging global community.

As people take sides around one or the other of these attitude sets, for better or for worse, passing around the expected slogans and attitudes, something perhaps overlooked but absolutely pivotal should also be worked into the mix: the exponential power of enlightened individual change at the personal level. In order to deal successfully with turbulent global change, an individual may find it helpful to seek to envision and inhabit a new life for himself or herself personally, while keeping in mind the emerging requirements dictated by new universal realities and while creating and expanding in a positive, enlightened, and life-enhancing way despite the self-defeating instinct to contract, to defend, or to rely unimaginatively on old familiar lockstep attitudes, whatever their source. Individual changes will then occur that will translate into global adaptivity and progress.

The basics of human existence at every level are currently up for renewal, and many people are in fact now asking themselves the following:

(1) Can I find a new, less wasteful way to be happy? Americans have long been addicted to wastefulness and overconsumption. With only 6 percent of the world's population, the United States consumes roughly 30 percent of the world's resources and considers suboptimal utilization of resources to be an acceptable byproduct of the pursuit of happiness. But couldn’t there be a better way, a way that doesn't lead to ecological contamination? Can we prosper without earning the resentment of the whole world?

(2) Can I find a new and more biologically harmonious way to be healthy? This society leads the world in developing new drugs and surgery because we don't want to sacrifice the fantasy that a magic pill equals health. Is there a way to nurture well-being that avoids the medical system almost entirely?

(3) Can I live a very long, very productive, and very enjoyable life? The outworn concept of old age as a time of decrepitude and inactivity gave way to "the new old age" twenty years ago, and now aging is gradually being absorbed into the human life cycle as a positive contribution, not a depressing decline. What will my place be in this new vision?

(4) Can I find a broader, more universal approach to my own personal spiritual growth? The stubborn defense of this or that flavor of organized religion as the exclusive road to legitimate spiritual fulfillment is clearly at odds with reality. In the developed world, organized religion is increasingly (and not always willingly) sharing the spiritual stage, as expansive new avenues of faith are opening up. How will you fulfill your spiritual yearning ten or twenty years from now?

In all these cases, the individual is far ahead of society as a whole. Every society is essentially a conservative institution that forms a framework for personal freedom, but society must still look to the individual to determine how that freedom is best used. The future will probably always hold strife and uncertainty, but strife and uncertainty provide needed fodder for creativity and ferment and for clearing away outmoded behavior and beliefs. In this clearing process lie enormous possibilities that we must not allow to be defeated by a stubborn clinging to the fixed and predictable attitudes of any faction. You yourself, in your humanity and your individual inventiveness, are the great possibility that will form the key to the world's successful negotiation of this time of enormous changes -- a fact worth remembering every day.

Oops---how did that get away from me? Sorry. Sometimes I use especially interesting articles and comments to practice my copyediting on, by using the preview and rewrite function of the "Post A Comment" utility of this GREAT BLOGSITE. Today's editing practice session somehow slipped through my clumsy, envious fingers..... I am not really so horribly presumptuous and intrusive in real life -- just an [overbearing] copy editor by trade. LOL. Who is the writer, by the way? I think he has potential.
