Deepak Chopra - August 29, 2008
Listening to Barack Obama's acceptance speech, I got two messages. The first was tactical. Like a general mapping out a battle strategy, Obama has listened carefully to his critics, and in the speech he rolled out rebuttals, one by one, to the charge that he must announce plans and solutions to the country's nagging problems. His trademark eloquence mostly had to wait until the last few moments, but when it came, the giant stadium audience was moved.
Yet for all its effectiveness in terms of tactics, the speech didn't dispel the specter that hung over it, and over the Obama campaign as a whole. The second message I heard was one of doubt and bewilderment. Can it really be true that a vast swath of the electorate thinks that Obama isn't an American or Christian, that he's a Muslim who wants to raise their taxes? A wiffle ball celebrity who has no real ideas?
At the root of this specter is apathy and indifference. By now, the country should know who Obama is and what he stands for. Most people do, in fact, and they have picked sides. They probably picked sides months ago, since the better informed a voter is, the more likely they are to make their decisions in the opening months of an election. The least informed and most apathetic voters make up their minds late, and it's these whom Obama must persuade. Can he?
For the past eight years the Republican machine has counted on the power of apathy to win elections. The effect works on several fronts:
--Appeal to bias and prejudice: Tell the voter that he's right to distrust Obama and all black men in general. If you're lucky, no new thinking or attitudes will pierce the shield of fixed opinions.
--Paint easy stereotypes: In Obama's case, the stereotype is of the snob and outsider, the elitist who isn't like you and me.
--Appeal to patriotism: Imply that Obama doesn't love the flag and therefore is inclined to cut and run, give in to foreign enemies, and neglect security.
--Fabricate falsehoods and never back down from your lies: Swift boating is the classic example, but calling Obama a Muslim competes on the same level of sleaze and dishonesty.
--Doubt your opponent's masculinity: This goes along with branding Obama a snob and an elitist but takes a subtle turn with the suggestion that he isn't experienced enough to run a war: he's a green youth sent to do a soldier's job.
--Fan the flames of fear: A tactic that won over the security moms for Bush in 2004 but has since weakened its punch. Fear could easily rise again if there is a major security threat between now and the election.
--Tell the public that everything is fine and not to worry. This is the opposite of the last point, but a certain segment of the population isn't bothered by contradictions. If Obama can be a Muslim and have a crazy Christian preacher at the same time, people might buy that the economy is tanking but there's no need to rock the boat.
It's tragic that these simple, low tactics have been so thoroughly effective since Reagan's rise in 1980, became perfected when the first George Bush slimed Michael Dukakis, and reached an apogee under Karl Rove. It's not an absolute truth that appealing to the most indifferent and least informed voters wins elections. But in an environment where two or three percentage points can shift the Presidency, playing the apathy card seems to work. What Obama has on his side is powerful: higher registration among Democrats, a surge of charisma and optimism, intelligence, a widespread sense that the Bush administration has been a massive failure, all the blunders in Iraq, a sagging economy, soaring gas pries, a mass perception that the country is headed in the wrong direction, and a workable vision for getting America back on track. In ordinary times, these advantages would overwhelm the Republicans and their none-too-strong candidate. Then you look at the polls and ask yourself, If Obama is so obviously superior by almost any measure, why isn't he ahead already?
I don't think anyone knows. We can speak of hidden racism and a need, as yet unfilled, for the average person to find out more about Obama, who remains, oddly, an enigma to many on Main Street. But the larger truth is that we have lived in the post-Watergate era with apathy and cynicism as the common denominator of politics. It would be a greater tragedy if this sad tradition continues, yet it will take nothing less than a sea change to end it.

Deepak,
I thought is was a "safe" speech.
The status quo depends on ignorance, and based on my direct observations and inquiry it is more prevalent then one might assume.
The only way to beat Obama is the manipulation of the ego, if only the gravity of spirit was involved then there would be a vast majority already behind Obama.
It's that Democrat vs. Republican division game it makes it easier to impose rule on everyone.
Spirit cannot be divided, only the ego can.
Hopefully many misjudged McCain and he secretly wants Obama to be president, maybe he saw through all the fictions and really does love his country.
The masked anonymous political consultant posts again:

With his "weakness" defined as his association with progressive movements, ideas or individuals, he can do nothing but run to the other direction for the next four years if he ascends to the office of President. Unless the ego gains the wisdom to connect to the source it is destined for self destruction because of the choices it makes and its limited capability. This can apply to a nation or most of human civilization.

When humans overcome great obstacles and challenges it is not because of ego but spirit.
That is why there is reference to the American Spirit in the success of the Nation, not the American Ego.
In great performance of a group we speak of team spirit, not team ego.
Ego connected to the source is independent but not divided. Source disconnected ego is by it’s nature divided.
The bees all return to serve the hive, but they fly independently.
We might also articulate that as truth loving ego, and fiction loving ego.
Most of the world is still living the fiction.
The collective depends on the individual, and the individual depends on the collective.
Knowing and understanding this is what leads to balance.

Hi Richard, then certainly the youth must have understood it well, because Barack did appeal to them en masse.
So, to me, youth is not apathic and cynic, they are the future, they have to pave the road ahead!
This would only be in the scheme of things.

Dear Dr. Chopra,
As Richard has said, "Most of the world is still living in fiction".
If I may, I would like to address some of your comments regarding tactical measures used to discredit Obama.
Who is telling the voter that he's right to distrust Obama because he is a black man? I haven't heard anyone playing the "race card" - except those who simply support Obama because he represents a symbol of accomplishment for the black race.
Who is portraying Obama as a snob and an outsider? This is a new one that I've not heard previously.
Who is calling Obama a Muslim? His middle name is Hussein but, I've yet to hear that mentioned by the mainstream media.
Masculinity has never been an issue. The measure has always been that of experience and that is a reasonable consideration.
The "fear card" is not a partisan power play. It is played by both parties.
The ultimate question is: Who is promoting the most preposterous and the most numerous misrepresentations of the facts. I don't believe that it is possible to distinguish a winner in the performance of this political practice.
Best Wishes,
"Betsy" S.
Go Obama!!!
Betsy #11, what hypocritical and ignorant retarded bullshit! I call you on it, because you are acting like a troll for a long time, and posting smears an lies about Obama and distortions about his record again and again at intentblog. You don't correct yourself and learn even after reading rebuttals with civility and facts to your claims. Not that this changes anything. You are so full of shit.
"Who is telling the voter that he's right to distrust Obama because he is a black man? I haven't heard anyone playing the "race card" - except those who simply support Obama because he represents a symbol of accomplishment for the black race."
You haven't heard?
Ok, yes like "dogs" don't hear "dog whistles"!
I understand you are deaf and dumb dog (or at least act like one), unlike most dogs that are targeted with those dog whistles.
So blacks(majority of Hispanics, Jews, gays, women too support democrats) who support the democratic party in general, supporting Obama is playing race card!
"Who is portraying Obama as a snob and an outsider? This is a new one that I've not heard previously."
Stupid fuckretard seriously! You are a ignorant moron. "Dog whistles" again.
"Who is calling Obama a Muslim? His middle name is Hussein but, I've yet to hear that mentioned by the mainstream media."
The stupid, it burns! I don't have to call you a mental retard, to portray you as such.
"The ultimate question is: Who is promoting the most preposterous and the most numerous misrepresentations of the facts. "
The answer is people like you who believe Corsi and conspiracy theories and anything that is anti-Obama with zero critical thinking, and the junk email smears and distortions form Fox News and such.
"I don't believe that it is possible to distinguish a winner in the performance of this political practice."
Finally, acknowledge that "fear card" is at least exists and is post partisan. Great.
Hello Deepak and Everyone,
I came home a few minutes ago and tuned into Greta on Fox TV...and she was talking on the phone to Newt Gingrich about McCain's choice of Palin as his VP...Greta is saying that she is getting hundreds of e-mails by women, excited. Newt is just so impressed and thinks that folks are going to just love that fact that she looks sooo good after five children. They are truly shoveling the doo-doo on this choice to the public...and listening to it I truly was starting to get sick...I have gone from "is he serious" "is this supposed to be funny" to now...appalled.
McCain's choosing Palin is appalling, it is an insult to any intelligent American who cares about their Country. It is the a joke, a political ploy that only the truly perverse would offer in this most serious of elections. They have taken political strategy to a new low.
For the last five years young American men and women have been slaughtered and bodies blown to bloody bits and pieces, they have given their lives in service to their Country and the Republican Candidate for President chooses as his Vice Presidential running mate, someone who is so unqualified for this great and serious undertaking that it can only be viewed as an insult to the Office itself, to our Government itself.
She is an ex beauty queen who is shown shooting her rifle with her little "updo" hair style while they annouce her anti-abortionist stance.
What this choice says about the Republican party is that this is not so much about cherishing and protecting a great Democratic Government as it is about playing a game, and the game has become seriously perverse and downright dirty.
Today John McCain insulted this Nation's political process, the Office of the Vice President, Women, the men and women of our Arm Forces, living and dead, by choosing this most unqualifed ex beauty queen to run as his VP Candidate.
I also think his perverse choice, will do more to unify the Democrats than Bill or Hillary ever could. Also it makes Barak Obama look absolutely golden while making John McCain look downright absurd.
The Palin choice is not a choice one even wants to joke about it is so seriously disturbing on so many levels. I am sure that as time goes on this will be realized and the republicans will have to do some serious cleaning up of their political party..
Well I think John McCain made the choice in November a much easier one by his choosing Palin...
A Barak and Joe ticket Americans can take as the serious Presidential ticket. A McCain and Palin ticket is the sad and sorry joksters ticket.
evening ruth
Ruth,
If McCain wanted to pick a woman form hsi party, there are several good women politicians in he GOP. Some of them are pro-choice. Picking Palin as his VP shows McCain's lack of judgment, it is purely a political gamble, and his only chance to victory.
Michael Clark at Daily Kos says "Yeah, I'm pretty much out of things to say about it, myself -- oh my God! What if that was their plan all along? To daze us into submission? Well, I suppose it worked: we haven't been talking about Obama's historic speech today, or about Katrina, or about John McCain turning 72 -- nope, we've all been reduced to a stupor, wondering if McCain has Lost His Friggin Mind.
So... I guess we've been given a clue as to the campaign McCain is going to be running. Something like "Drilling For Jesus", I gather? Trying to shore up those folks that think Bush is misunderestimated, global warming is a librul plot, having a foreign policy is overrated, etc.?"
I just want to add that I think McCain's choice of Palin is just that subtle awakening the public needs to take them where they need to go in November. Palin's nomination is like an ice water bath, all of the sudden the picture present itself clearly. and your instinct tells you the game has changed course and you need to pay close attention. Palin's nomination is a very serious wake-up call.

America is imploding. Palin represents Corporate America who values the dollar over human life. All McCain has to do is take some viagra and she will be President. Yikes.. love patty

Here comes Obama...walking on the water...
But in my apathetic state....I really don't give a damn!
Oh yeah...he's gonna sink...he's really a chicago thug politician....the lights are slowly being turned on....by November....apathy will be replace by outright hostility...toward your messiah....
What a great day in Dayton....
She's run a large state....Obama's done what? Oh yeah, 143 days in the senate. 8 years in the illinois legislature...where he wouldn't commit to anything lest he be found out...oh...he was a community agitator...i bout for got about that...
I need to go...but i'm so apathetic i can't get out of my chair...
:)
You continue to win over middle America Deepak by telling them they are stupid and lazy.
You really do understand Obama, you are both kindred spirits, both of you have disdain and comtempt for this great country.
So please continue to shout out your mantra of "Stupid America", it's refreshing and so authentic.
Steve
Well, well, well Depak once again your divisive rhetoric has accomplished it's goal. Look how you have people speaking to one another on this blog. I mean after reading all your books and listening to all your CD's I thought we were all one. By the way this is the second time I have asked, but can I please have my money back for those?
Spec: #13 Welsh. Welsh your mama needs to wash your mouth out with soap and slap you a couple of times to teach you how to act in polite soceity. Oh but I forgot she's probably a liberal lame also. A liberal lame's motto is " do what ever you want , take responsibility for nothing and for god's sake send some one else the bill."
Yes a liberal lame wants to drink and smoke, weight 350lbs and then send me the bill for their health care. That would be you, yes?
The only individual's who seem to have any intelligence on this blog are Betsy post#11.
Also Skinny post#20 and of course me. I am not saying I am for McCain, but I am not for Obama either.
However Obama will probably be elected not because of the people's need and want for CHANGE, because we all know he can't deliver on that promise. I mean he IS bought and paid for by the Washington elite(look who he picked for VP, one of the most long term in Washington). If any of you recorded Obama's speech, run it to the end where Obama and party are leaving and freeze frame it right where Biden looks at Obama when he thinks the camera's can't see. That look says it all. That look says "you did good, boy".
It made me sick.
Also all of Obama's flowery speeches are the same ole, same ole from the Washington elite. If you don't believe me just look at Nancy and her crowd, they made all kinds of promises if you lames would only give them power of Congress. Well you did and nothing absolutely nothing has been accomplished by them.
Also 8yrs ago Obama couldn't even get into the DNC his credit card was maxed out,he was in all kinds of debt, he had to watch it on monitors. So I ask where did his million bucks come from? Where the hell did he come from.
Obama will not be elected because he has the experience or will bring change, he will be elected because liberal lame whites are too afraid of the R word and the Washington elite wants a token in the white house, someone who they can manage.
And not to be bias, both parties are always guilty of this. Although the RNC may not get what they want with Mc Cain. I don't know.
I am sick of all our political leaders, we need to fire them all and start over.
And Deepak, your karma will follow you. Getting people to do what you want makes you responsible.

Welsh... I got two lame posts from you. But let me clue you on something else. He who cannot make a ligetimate arguement always resorts to profanity or some such other weak ineffectual retort. By the way your use of profanity just expresses your limited intelligenece and vocabulary.
Likewise, "troll" is the best you can do with regard to the name calling? If there is a troll on this blog, that would be you.
You are a bore at best, and a sophist at worst.
Leave politics alone and for god sakes go educate yourself!

Aloha ... if of interest to anyone.. from Ron Paul:
The situation our country faces is as dangerous as ever. A certain Democratic senator, recently passed over for the Republican vice-presidential nod, is likely to be our next secretary of state. Both major parties remain committed to militarism and reckless spending - and inflationism to fund it all.
At their convention the Democrats uttered barely a peep about the surveillance state, the police state, and the Bush administration's disastrous foreign policy. Needless to say, there was not a word about the Fed and what it's done to our economy. We can only imagine what the GOP Convention will have in store for us.
The Rally for the Republic is the first step in alerting our countrymen to these dangers, and holding out the message of freedom as the only remedy. We must resist the false choices the two major parties are giving us. Help me spread our great ideas far and wide. Join me in Minneapolis, and let's shake the rafters.
In liberty,

"He who cannot make a ligetimate arguement *always* resorts to profanity or some such other weak ineffectual retort."
Make that "often"(not "always".) That makes your argument 'sound' and even though your evidence is weak to support your conclusion it doesn't contradict your whole point and make you look like a hypocrite and a moron.
Don't even bother to reply in the guise of spreading your compassion and displaying your self-appraised intellect.

Folks, Paulisoso made a typo and felt the need to correct it. As if someone here is mean enough to attack him for his typos, by assuming them as his genuine mistakes due to ignorance of the spelling of the word, thus reflecting his IQ or something.
Wait a minute, so he REALLY doesn't know how to spell the word "legitimate" ("ligetimate arguement"#26.)
What a moron.

Now this enough about you.

Dear Paulisoso,
In regard to your Posting No. 26, please don't be concerned. I have also been called a "troll" by Mr. Welsh. In Celtic Lore the elves, i.e. trolls are known to be keepers of great wisdom and they are respected, supernatural beings.
Anyway, just consider the source and don't be troubled by the name calling.
Best Wishes,
"Betsy" S.
Dear Paulisoso,
Your commentary in Posting No.22 is great. You have described the situation as it exists. The problem is that too many people have not taken the trouble to educate themselves concerning the true motivations behind the pretty words of the politicians. Mr. Axelrod (chief consultant to Obama) is an excellent purveyor of grandiose messages which in actuality have no substance. Obama is good at presenting his words in a dramatic, believable manner. He is a great showman but, his political record exposes his true nature and shows he is motivated by unsavory principles. The manipulators have done an excellent job at covering up the facts and have replaced the focus on facts with an image of someone representing change (however, the type of actual change desired has not been exposed).
When I watch Obama I am reminded of Bill Clinton. He was an excellent speech giver and a real charmer (he could charm the pants off of anyone, and generally did just that). His words never held any substance.
Best Wishes,
"Betsy" S.
#22 Someone has to be elected, pauli, I do believe the people can take it from there if they want too.
Obama may well turn out to be the sacrificial lamb but so was Jesus Christ.
As a Brit I can begin to identify with the Global out-reach of Obama. We have talked and talked. NOW is the time to tend this beautiful flower of humanity, for it is surely greater than Obama but he is fertile ground and we the gardeners. I believe it is what he wants.
Hmmm, Betsy, trolls are Scandinavian. If Celtic tales speak of them, that would be the reflection of centuries of Scandinavian raids into the British Isles -- trolls aren't native to Celtic lore, tradition or culture.
Irvine had slown night and morning at the auditors desk at his Motel 6....
c'mon boy...go shake the dandruff off your bathrobe, clean your glasses...mama will have dinner for you in a little while...
The idea is…
We are not going be dependant on the President or Congress for the changes and evolution of the systems and policy. We will also not be waiting executive and middle management to initiate change.
The undivided people will be in charge of execution and will be assuming control it is the hope that the president and congress will not resist but will facilitate or face removal.
The consumer, producer, and shareholder organized and acting collectively will be the driving force for change, quality performance, and policy.
This is called self rule by the many, rather than imposed rule by a few over the many.
That we are dependant on the President and Congress to initiate and implement change is an illusion.
We the people undivided in unity are the masters and they are servants to the whole. Our collective intent and will is that which dictates, the detail execution decided in a Socratic manner with all perspectives based on truth obliged and integrated.
Dear heath,
Please don't join the ranks of the nitpickers who blow a fuse over spelling mistakes and the like. Have you ever heard of a bit of artistic license? Elves and trolls are certainly related, even though they are defined differently in various cultures.
Why waste the space and energy on this website making irrelevant corrections when we should be concerned about serious issues that require attention?
LET'S TRY TO FOCUS ON THE ISSUES INSTEAD OF ATTACKING CONTRIBUTORS. BY BEING PETTY YOU ARE LOWERING THE QUALITY OF THIS SITE.
You may quite possibly be related to Mr. Welsh.
"Betsy" S.
Well, the last couple of threads here are full of opinions, opinions and opinions but none of them really lead to more insight into what really matters:
Can You be the change that you wish to see in the world?
Meaning: to personally transform yourself into that what You want the world to be like and live it?
It is the only way you see, step by step, one person at a time.
I know these are Deepak's words but long before he had written them down I already lived them!
Improving the world can only begin with oneself.
As long as we keep judging the outside world we are really only judging ourselves.
Same happens in my country. And now that we have chosen a government in the middle it still is not good and we keep complaining, because it will never be good as long as we do not change ourselves.
But we all know this already and we just don't give a damn about it.
Starry starry night, paint your palets blue and gray, look out for a sunny day...
But I could have told you Vincent, they will not listen, they are not listing still, perhaps they never will...

Dear Paulisoso,
Regarding your commentary in Posting No.22:
Whoever ends up in the White House will be subject to the agendas of the Power Elite behind the scenes. Don't ever believe that a single token "figurehead" President is actually running the show.
The machinations of the political maneuvering in the apparent battle for the Presidency are not the sole result of a contest between different ideologies. There has been an increasing diminishment of the difference between the approaches to governing between the Republicans and the Democrats. The voice of the true Conservative is no longer acknowledged. Look at what happened to Ron Paul. He is a voice of sanity amidst a majority of the insane in politics.
The actual orchestration of the argumentation amongst the politicians is implemented by others. The main goal of creating an apparent contest between the parties is so that a powerful few can gain control of the world's economy and military (a One World Government/a New World Order).
If you have a chance, please listen to what David Icke and Michael Tsarion have to say about the real power groups. Michael Tsarion says that the controlling forces are revving up their activities and strategies because they know that there is a growing awakening of the mass consciousness underway. They know that they are running out of time in being able to hide their agendas. To put it in Tsarion's words, "The Roach Cleaning is about to begin".
Best Wishes,
"Betsy" S.
