Silence of the Lamb

Deepak Chopra - August 27, 2008

An article in the Washington Post On Faith section in response to their question: Advise John McCain and Barack Obama on the role religion should play in their presidential campaigns.

This will be a short response: I'd advise both candidates the same way. Don't mention religion a single time in the upcoming campaign. Various reverends and pastors have already embarrassed both McCain and Obama, proving that the clergy is even more fickle than the general public. (The fact that these reverends and pastors throw in their private brand of anti-Semitism, reverse racism, social paranoia, apocalyptic fantasies, and other flavors of kookism is even more embarrassing and offensive.) Courting the Christian right worked for the Republican party because the Democrats largely left the field open. Their distaste for wooing fundamentalists was well-founded and remains well-founded.

Religion is a divisive subject, and the founding fathers were wise to dampen its effect on government. Obama had every right to expect a smooth endorsement from his pastor, whom he regarded as a mentor and a friend, but the Rev. Jeremiah Wright was so dazzled by the limelight -- and the scent of political influence -- that he grossly overstepped the bounds of the pulpit. On the right, preachers overstep that boundary and regularly get away with it. They shouldn't. God does not send a signal through any messenger that one candidate is more worthy than another, and anyone who claims to be such a messenger is a fraud. As for Jesus, the Lamb of God is silent on political matters. Take your cue from him, if you need one.

Yes

Well, Deepak, your advice may be too little too late in coming...

word is John McCain is going to announce his VP choice when Barak Obama gives his acceptance speech and word is he has short listed Jesus but sadly, he is going to be a no show....apparently you are right...he only gives the silent treatment...McCain has to, now, hurry and scurry about for something holy, and something blue...or is that red? red states blue states...can't keep track...where is CNN when you need them? anyway, as I was saying....so John McCain's camp, which consist of Rove, Bush and Cheney say that maybe they could just take Jesus, pick him up off the cloud as he floats by Airforce One...give him a serious talking to(if you know what I mean, with lots of water to drink, in the process, even Jesus gets thirsty) and then maybe he would see things "their way" and accept the offer that others would dare not refuse.....hmmmmmmmm

they say it may be Mitt from Salt Lake City. hmmmm

oh, well, yes, it's sick but then I am a liberal democrat, what can one expect?

hats and rabbits...ruth

Dear Dr. Chopra,

There is a difference between religion (founded by men) and spiritual awareness (acquired through education and experience). It is possibly ill-advised to compare religious affiliations amongst political candidates; however, I do believe that the issues should be discussed. The positions taken by the candidates on the issues are determined by their spiritual beliefs (moral and ethical values).

I don't understand your statement: "As for Jesus, the Lamb of God is silent on political matters". The teachings of Jesus are meant to be applied to all matters governing the existence of mankind.

Again, I ask the questions: How can anyone endorse a candidate who openly supports infanticide? Have we sunk to such a level of moral degradation that we cannot recognize the insanity of such an idea?"

Best Wishes,

"Betsy" S.

Aloha Deepak

I am amazed you are supporting anyone for president. The system is archaic. Where is your wisdom. love patty

Short on response, long on labels, including a new one "Kookism":

"The fact that these reverends and pastors throw in their private brand of anti-Semitism, reverse racism, social paranoia, apocalyptic fantasies, and other flavors of kookism."

Would you agree Deepak that we simply shut out all but progressive voices? Then the remaining would live as Uptopiasts!

To dream, but please no religion spoken here, and don't even try to sneak in values and ethics that religion teaches.

Steve

I wish Deepak would read the Bible end-to-end and then write a Bible Commentary immediately afterward...that way he could keep the crooks honest.

"God does not send a signal through any messenger that one candidate is more worthy than another, and anyone who claims to be such a messenger is a fraud. As for Jesus, the Lamb of God is silent on political matters. Take your cue from him, if you need one." ~ Deepak Chopra

God certainly does and the Bible gives plenty of stories about God selecting kings, even tho God prefers that we not have kings per the Bible, as God is the only true KING. However, I don't know if 'worthy' is a good word, as 'best' is a better word - best for the USA at this time. God definitely knows who will be our next president in this election, as well all the ones to follow. And God certainly sends messengers to communicate his intent whether they are angels or prophets. God's WILL is always done. Maybe some folks just know what is going to happen like mediums or prophets whether it's good or bad. I personally believe that Obama has been chosen by God for America and he will be our next president and assist the USA to bring about positive changes of peace to world, as well as cleaning up some of the mess we now have in the USA.... just my 2 cents.

"Religion is a divisive subject, and the founding fathers were wise to dampen its effect on government." ~ Deepak Chopra

Yes, very wise.

Honestly, Deepak, I agree with you. Jesus wasn't into politics from my view, but just the basic rights of people despite what some particular law may wrongly dictate.

I think siding with a human who is supposed to represent a set belief system is setting yourself up to be judged by their flaws. All humans have flaws (or bad habits, if you will) and I personally think, a whole lot of limelight is just fodder for inflated egos.

Hello Deepak and Everyone,

now my serious comment.....

Deepak you write,"Religion is a divisive subject, and the founding fathers were wise to dampen its effect on government."

Really, I think each and every American understands exactly what you are saying with that sentence.....not only were they wise but I think that their recognition of religion's divisiveness has been this Nation's guiding force in terms of everyone's choice being protected in terms of choosing how to practice and choose their own teacher of values and ethics whether it is religion based or not...As an American I am forever thankful for their wisdom.

silence is golden....thank you Jesus....ruth

Yes, thank you Jesus and praise the great Lord our Father and Son and their Holy Spirit!

However, most on this website appear to know that silent place within where the God of all resides, but there are many who do not listen, nor know how to yet. So with this in mind, since we are the vessels of God, we will speak as we are compelled to, which is also protected by the Constitution - freedom of speech.

Jesus spoke right up to the point prior to his crucifixion, even tho he knew God intimately. However, he was wise enough to know when to remain silent, as he did many times when the Pharisees questioned him as they had hopes of making a mockery of him, so parables were the tools Jesus preferred to utilize.

So I can see where Deepak is coming from and understand it, but it does not apply to all Christians or people. Therefore, it seemed a little black and white to me, as well as matter of fact when I don't think it is at our most basic understanding. I guess if one spoke only from the highest level, then it could stand, but then many people would be isolated by the real verses illusion aspect.

.... just thinking out loud, as this posting of Deepak troubles me and I'm trying to understand why.

"As for Jesus, the Lamb of God is silent on political matters." ~ Deepak Chopra

Yes, it is a silent voice that speaks thru us and I do believe that God is involved in everything right down to the last little detail. God might be silent, but it is powerful and we perceive that gentle voice, as his children. We were given the mouth to speak, as God flows thru us all.

Praise the Lord! .... from that little silent voice within my heart and soul.

Love, Char

I agree with Deepak's advice, nothing wrong with being Spiritual and the idea that there is some Benevolent All Pervading Intelligence and a connection between all being and that compassion results in the creation of the best future reality for all. But it stops there the rest is mostly Dogma and Fiction.

The Conservative vs. Liberal Game of duality and fiction not unity and all as One.

Politics and government are like Religion and Spirituality. Religion at its core without the dogma and fictions is spirituality. When spirituality is adorned with fictions it becomes an institutional game of competition for power and control with winners and losers and unresolved conflict.

Which is like Politics and Government, politics at its core without the dogma and fictions is government, and in a Democracy government is self rule by the many not imposed rule by a few.

Government at its core being how various needs and wants are expressed and met or obtained and how combined efforts are implemented and what joint ventures are formed and funded to achieve what individuals cannot achieve alone. Politics when infused with fiction and division becomes a game of competition between parties and people for power and control with winners and losers.

In the integrated and balanced approach there are no losers or winners.

The solution to the unresolved conflict in both Religion and Politics is to dissolve the Illusions embrace the truth and discard the fictions.

Conservative at its core simply represents wisdom mostly gained from the past and understanding of the present.

Liberal at its core is freedom something every individual loves.

There is no conflict between wisdom and freedom, and they are not opposites.

What happens is that the terms conservative and liberal get cloaked with many fictions as a result of faulty intentions that are individual self serving. Not that the individual should not serve themselves, but it must be in balance with the collective self, the whole body.

A classic example: A liberal fiction might be, why not do away with wages and have everyone just work and do their job. If you need something from the store just go get it. Wisdom tells us knowing human nature that although ideal it will not work in the current reality. The current reality is that not everyone loves their jobs. Sure there are some that would do what they do out of passion, but not most. This is partly because the systems and infrastructure are of a primitive design. We have an artificial economy built on top of the genuine economy. So some people would simply stop going to work since they can get all they need from the store.

Would you eat if you never got hungry? Hunger provides an incentive to get food. So you see incentive is inherent in the natural systems. If you did not have hunger and therefore did not eat by the time you realized you had no mobility because you did not supply raw materials to the body it would be to late because many cells would already be dead.

A classic example: A conservative fiction might be, you the general population are mostly ignorant. Therefore you go to the place we designate, work 8 hours and follow our instructions supporting the systems and infrastructure we design for you. We will provide you food and shelter. Meanwhile we will live in mansions and luxury and waste, and determine the societal needs as we see fit, a sort of master servant relationship. Of course right away we can see this is a fiction, disparity aside, because what is used to determine the requirement that everyone in the economic system needs to work a 40 hour week to support the system? There is currently no means to assess the work requirements and the 40 hour work week it is not based on science. In fact because of design flaws we have people working 69 hour weeks and some people not working at all, an out of balance condition.

I think the biggest and first issues with the current system are greed, corruption, deception and disinformation.

Greed not being the generation of an enormous amount of value for others in the economic system and therefore producing great genuine wealth, but greed being taking value from the system and other economic system participates that is greater than the value if any created, perhaps by the creation of artificial value or gimmick or a lucrative government contract or legislation. Resolving the greed and corruption requires transparency, controls and collective oversight and management and an informed without bias population and citizenry.

■■■New■■■
Individuals in government are subject to the same flaws and weaknesses that afflict the individuals governed. Just as there are wisdom based controls for those governed there must be wisdom based controls on individuals in government. The wisdom based controls on government come from those being governed. It’s like a circle of recursive supervision. However the ability and devices for the governed to effectively apply wisdom based controls to individuals in government do not exist, but the technology and infrastructure to support these effective controls now exists. A vote every four years is not sufficient control to meet the speed of change in the present day and properly support evolution. It provides enough time to take the money and run, damage done. An important control is a measure that shows that representatives are in deed making decisions in alignment with collective intent, will, and the truth discerned.
■■■

The truth never has a bias only fictions do.

And the classic quote from infinite play

"Religion is a creation of man, not God, and is subject to flaws"

Especially in the interpretation

Have you all ever witnessed Church politics? These people are supposed to be representatives for God?

This is not to say certain writings are not divinely inspired and are void of spiritual insight and wisdom, but many of the have become tainted by source disconnected ego and organized religion has become an egoic institution to control and subvert, propagators of division, illusion and fiction.

I am sure all the great spiritual teachers are appalled at the commercialization of their work.

There is nothing wrong with Spirit being aggressively involved in Politics and Government, in other words giving truth, wisdom and compassion a voice and presence. We need more of this.

"Don't mention religion a single time in the upcoming campaign."

Yup. I'd go with that.

If someone asks, the correct response is to say what matters is how an individual behaves, whether a person respects others and treats others with respect and compassion, and whether he lives his own life according to values of respect, honesty, compassion and love.

That matters. The name of the religion a person professes is not nearly as important. They can invoke all the great Gods and quote all the scriptures they want. But if their behavior is not honest, respectful, compassionate and loving then they are not spiritually-oriented people.

Marianne Williamson talks lucidly about the separation of church and State Washington Cathedral.

Click my name to watch and hear.

If all the Religions evolved you wouldn't be able to tell them apart, you wouldn't even need to differentiate.

One simple religion is to focus on the divine concept through out the day, center your self, and be religious about it, maybe a dozen times a day, you could even add a little ritual, and look to where the Sun rises and think about the sun and how it provides and asks nothing, connect to the source, the infinite mind. Then just deal with the present moment and do within your power, and go with the flow... and everything works out.

This is the “Concise Religion” for today’s short attention spans and brevity of thought for those that want to simply worship and love all of creation and recognize the collective intelligence behind it. A finite mind connected to the infinite mind is a balanced mind. Think of it as tapping into the right brain, the non-linear processing mind.

So what is the Divine concept? That the Divine is you, and all the seemingly “other”, that the witness is all one being, both noun and verb; and that all are of one body, that this is why the right hand pulls the thorn from the left foot and the heart pumps blood to every cell. That there is only one source of love and it is unconditional, we can choose to channel it or not. If we do not then we cut ourselves off from the source. Then problems occur. The universe does not have problems, it only creates challenges and the resources to meet the challenges are always there if you are connected to the source, often found within and witnessed without.

There you go an entire religion in three paragraphs; we can call them the Trinity. We just throw in a virtual church and we have a new religion all the rest is science shouldn’t take long.

Aloha Richard

I listened to Marianne... loved how Marianne shared about the female lion and not analyzing her on instinctive behavior in connection to her cubs. We have lost 1000 soldiers, Iraqis 100000 and how we are feeling the pain in compassion. love patty

Dear Richard,

Thank you for your recommendation of the video,"Marianne Williamson at Washington Cathedral". Her message is critical to the world of today.

She speaks eloquently about how the Church has tried to exterminate the role of the passionate, free-thinking woman and to eliminate the recognition of the Sacred Feminine from its teachings.

The Church has purposely eradicated the image of the Goddess/Teacher from its recognition. In times past, the Goddess/Priestess was revered for her wisdom and she had high status. During the Medieval Period much editing was done to scriptures and the Goddess was eliminated altogether. Mary Magdalene was an esteemed partner of Jesus. The church has portrayed her as a harlot. Read "The Woman With the Alabaster Jar" by Margaret Starbird. The Goddess has always been a protector of Life and the Innocent. We must revive her awareness and give birth to a New Wisdom and the Reverence For Life.

Best Wishes,

"Betsy" S.

Hi Patty and Betsy, yes she says it well and the message is critical in the world today and yes the feminine has been suppressed, and I think the world is on the way to having a balance.
