The American Spirit

Derrick N Ashong - August 30, 2008

I wrote this the night of The Speech. In the wake of McCain's announcement yesterday I think it is ever more important to think about the global implications of the decision we are about to make.

---
Tonight with laptop before me, cell phone in hand, and the world at my fingertips I watched Senator Obama raise the bar in American politics to such a height as to put his opponent’s very relevance into question.

All year we have heard that Obama lacks the experience to lead the nation; that he's peddling false hopes. For those who have taken the time to read his policy positions, to explore his story, to genuinely listen to what he has been saying in his speeches, it's been clear for some time that this son of a single-mother, Harvard Law graduate, community organizer, teacher of Constitutional Law, State and then US senator is neither a Pollyanna, nor an ingénue; not an idealist, nor an innocent and certainly not an “elitist.”

All year we've watched the slings and arrows flying fast from the quarters of those whose commitment to the wealthiest among us is matched only by their poverty of ideas and the unmitigated gall with which they have striven to distract the American people from the defining issues of our day. In a world where regular people can no longer believe in the security of their jobs, homes or health the Republican Party has determined that the issue at hand is not the crumbling fabric of American life, but rather the popularity of the opposing candidate. In the absence of substantive solutions to the problems facing our nation Senator McCain has chosen to fight this political battle on the fringes of common sense. But we who have been paying any attention at all are well aware of at least one simple truth:

This election is about much more than Paris Hilton.

Tonight I saw Senator Obama stand and deliver what will go down as one of the great speeches in American public life. But what moved me most perhaps was the experience of watching it. With television, laptop and BlackBerry before me, I Tweeted, texted and Facebooked with young people on every continent as we watched History made before us. I was struck not so much by the esteem in which friends and strangers hold Senator Obama, but by the fact that we have all clearly heard the call that he is making.

The GOP has failed to understand what is the fundamental genius of Barack Obama's candidacy. Senator Obama has never made this campaign about The One...he has made it about The Many. And from Kansas to Qatar, Paris to Pittsburgh a generation is heeding his call to responsibility for our collective future. Senator Obama tonight proved himself not only qualified to be Leader of the Free World, but as someone uniquely qualified to make it a freer one. In a world desperately in need of heroes, he has ignited the spirit of heroism in us all. And no distraction, no distortion, no demonization will quench the American spirit that breaths today in the hearts of the citizens of the world.

Aloha Derrick

It is easy to talk the talk. Someone who walks the talk is someone we need. And that can only be ourself. We have killed 1000 American soldiers and 100000 Iraqis in the war for mass weapons of destructions. Bush's elections were taken and given. Who are we kidding in believing in a system that is run by Corporation America. Where does their money come from? They are all dealing us. It is time to elect Nobody for President. Every point is the center and every other point is the center. love patty

Hear, hear!

Brilliant post, Derrick.

See...I've been telling you...Obama walks on water!!

He's exactly what I want leading this country, yep, a friend of William Ayers, a protege of Jeremiah Wright, and the only senator with a more liberal voting record than Bernie Saunders of vermont...a self described socialist...

Go Obama, Go!!! Straight to the trash heap of history....

Go Obama, Go....you had the chance to truly make history...you could've nominated Hillary...but you knew you don't throw much of shadow beside Big Bill...so you chickened out and picked the old gasbag. Mac took the chance, took a lady and is gonna cream you!!

Go Obama Go....you would be nobody with out the major media...you are a creation of fantasy, all flash...no substance...enjoy your 15 minutes...November 5th...it's all over...

:)

Dear Skinny,

Thanks for your commentary. I hope that the American public will wake up to the fact that they are being fed an orchestrated line of bull regarding Obama. I hope that they will be inspired to support a Pro-life team. At least that is one area that should be held sacred by our people. We need to Love Life.

Well, the last couple of threads here are full of opinions, opinions and opinions but none of them really lead to more insight into what really matters:

Can You be the change that you wish to see in the world?

Meaning: to personally transform yourself into that what You want the world to be like and live it?

It is the only way you see, step by step, one person at a time.

I know these are Deepak's words but long before he had written them down I already lived them!

Improving the world can only begin with oneself.

As long as we keep judging the outside world we are really only judging ourselves.

Same happens in my country. And now that we have chosen a government in the middle it still is not good and we keep complaining, because it will never be good as long as we do not change ourselves.

But we all know this already and we just don't give a damn about it.

Starry starry night, paint your palets blue and gray, look out for a sunny day...

But I could have told you Vincent, they will not listen, they are not listing still, perhaps they never will...

Starry starry night....

Dear Mieke

Barack Obama's public persona inspires our will to change, both personally and communally. That's what his candidacy is about. His views are a distillation of our dreams. He adds to them his own leadership skills. We hope to elect him. Though once elected he'll be part of the old institutions, he'll bring his own flavor to the working of government. Little differences can make for far-reaching effects.

The storm in the Gulf is very strong symbol.
The storm in Denver was also a very strong symbol.

What are the chances a hurricane would hit between Houston, Bush's home town and New Orleans on the anniversary of Katrina and during the Republican Convention? With three more storms on it's tail.

This also in light that James Dobson asking Christians to pray for rain to cancel the Democratic Convention. The weather here in Colorado was perfect. In fact the day before Obama spoke it was hot and no breeze.the day he spoke it cooled down and there was a slight breeze. The next day it rained. It seems even the earth is ready for change.

peace comes from peace

Hi All,

The interest thing about change is that it is one of those fundamental things in life that in fact "just happens." Whether the change that comes is the change we seek, however, is entirely up to us.

We cannot afford to sit idly by, assuming that things will just "work themselves out." Voting for "Nobody" in this election is a vote for a poisonous stasis. Some voters are so embittered by the shortcomings of their favored candidate (eg. the post-Hillary PUMA crowd) that they are willing to cast a ballot in support of the status quo, rather than one in support of real & substantive change. In my mind neither perspective is indicative of the kind of genuine commitment required to create a substantive betterment of our nation and the world, though they offer heartfelt lip-service to the same.

I have heard time & time again unreasoned arguments against Senator Obama's candidacy from people demanding to know what he stands for; people who have often not even taken the time to look at his platform. Voters who are willfully undereducated about the issues that will define our lives. Some would rather swallow whole the party line, rather than simply look online for the information they purportedly seek. For those who have yet to discover the wonders of "The Google" you can find both candidates' platforms here :

http://www.barackobama.com/issues/

http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/issues/

It is the conceit of the privileged to decide "not to vote" because you don't see the perfect candidate in the running. When did perfection become the province of human beings? For those of us who know what it truly means to not be able to vote, we will ALWAYS do so, irrespective of whether the leader of our dreams is on the ticket, simply because we recognize and cherish the opportunity to make our voices heard. And we understand the danger of leaving our destinies in the hands of anyone other than ourselves...

It is the responsibility of every citizen to stand up and be counted as our society determines it's future. I have picked my candidate and I am so proud of my generation for taking an unprecedented interest in moving our world to a better place. For those of you who are crippled by dissatisfaction that Corporate America is too powerful, or that there is not a woman at the top of the ticket, or that one of the candidates is "too popular," I'd ask simply that you take a moment to look at the world around you...and understand that it is indeed the world of your creation.

My generation is going to change it for the better. And not based on dreams, fairy-tales or media-created memes. We will change this world because change is inevitable, and we are willing to work for a change we CAN believe in, to educate ourselves about what's at stake, to refuse to be distracted by petty prejudices and bitterness, and to stand up and be counted for the good of that world in the best and worst of times - in sickness and in health.

Global Society is crying out for peace. A generation is awakening to believe that we indeed are already the change we seek. Many of us have found in Senator Obama a standard-bearer willing to withstand the slings & arrows, and give us a chance to make a substantive difference. And so in 2008 with grace on our tongues, commitment in our minds and hope in our hearts we will fix our hands in service of a better day, and overcome every obstacle along the way.

Peace,
D.N.A

OBAMA '08

Hello Derrick and everyone,

Derrick I think what you have written about Barak Obama is mostly projection, imo, not actual fact.

I really do not know if Barak Obama has a fundamental genius or not.

As a Hillary supporter I have questioned his capabilities against hers and found hers to be more in applying for the job..of leader. Since other Democrats have chosen Barak I have no problem signing on to the team...he is capable to lead, he is a serious contender for the race for the Office of the Presdency and his choice for VP is impressive and thoughtful....

on the other hand

John McCain's choice with the help of his political strategist have chosen to make a mockery of our electorial process and the Office of the Presidency by choosing Palin who is probably the most unlikely, unqualified Candidate in the 21st century to hold the second highest Office in the Nation...the Vice Presidency. Her nomination was just pure fun, image, shock effect...a real twist in the ole game..I can hear them now...."wait till they(Democrats) get a load of Palin as my VP" hahahahahahahahah,heheheheheheeh,hahahahah....yuk,yuk, yuk.

I think American's spirit will prevail over what is now McCain's Mockery....and McCain's Mockery has made Barak Obama and Joe Biden the only serious choice available, has made Barak Obama look not just smart and intelligent...but yes downright genius....even Joe Biden's know gaffes will look like salt of the earth mutterings...

The American people have been served platefuls of mockery pie since day one of the Bush Administration and eaten it up, digested it and have not refused the next plate offered......but

John McCain's plateful of Mockery Pie is just to twisted a dish to stomach....and not just for the ONE.....but especially for the MANY. I think Palin may be the dish the American people finally refuse to eat.

have a great day and remember...America is better than THIS(McCain & Palin & Co.)

ruth

Good morning, ruth

I wanted to say, as an HC supporter, that I support BO because he won. That in itself shows leadership. I disagree that Derrick is projecting. I still love HC. Yet I was thrilled by BO's strength, purpose and vision, in his Thursday night speech. The O, B & Co team were already the only serious choice. That McCain made or allowed himself to be convinced to make, that Palin selection, is just confirmation of what we already knew. The reasons I support BO wholeheartedly is he's realistic but not a cynic, he fights like hell, he's clear-eyed, and he's for all of us too, not for himself alone. I do see he could let his ego take him to a place where people like Lincoln refused to let themselves go. And so I'm very happy for term limits. But we've all been wishing for someone to jump-start us on the path to better living in the most universal sense. BO is the leader who can possibly take us there. He / we can fail, but at least with him, we have a chance. One interesting thing I think I saw on Biden's face on Thursday night was how Joe Biden clearly knows that Obama won because he deserves it, because he's head and shoulders above just about everyone, and a little bit taller than Clinton, and Biden is feeling kind of privileged and slightly intimidated to have been chosen. His main role, as I see it, will be to break the power-associated isolation that will surround Obama, which can be very distressing and stressful. And his ability to be graceful in virtually all social and political situations will be a great gift for Obama, who shows stress and pressure too easily, though he handles it well. Obama has taken on more than the possible Presidency for four or eight years, he's take on ethical leadership of the US, and possibly the world. He is a ground-breaker. If he wins, we will all win.

love, h

Morning Heath,

I listened to Barak's speech too, and thought it was a good, solid, and serious political speech from a man who is a politician who desires to become the President of the United States, I would not say in any way he is a cut above Hillary Clinton in their sincere motivation to take care of issues that are necessary and important to the many not just the one. To say, imo, that Barak Obama is a ground breaker, other than being the first in his race to be nominated for the Presidency of the United States, which is no small deal in an of itself, is premature, we, the Nation, have really not seen him in action, at all.

I think Derrick's piece is way over the top in describing Barak Obama, not at all unlike Deepak's writings about him....but I get that they are excited, hopeful, and longing, in many ways for a leader,...no, I think more than a leader.

I am very willing to give Barak my vote but I know that he has yet to prove to me the many virtues his supporters have lauded about him, which really is the case for anyone newly elected to any official public office.

byw....I have The Dancer and hope to have some free time tonite or tomorrow to watch it!

a reminder for all....American is better than THIS(McCain & Palin & Co.)

have a great day heath.....always a pleasure to chat it up with you.....:) ruth

I see little difference between the democratic and republican parties anymore. They are both controlled by the power elite. We are slowly sliding down the slippery slope of fascism without much protest.

So if Obama-Biden steal our votes just to start another war in Pakistan or trade one war for another; which is the rhetoric I'm hearing and not many people are paying attention to,or capitulate furthur on the erosion of the constitution(as in FISA) I will be screaming impeachment!

No more deception!!!!

Hi Bonnie,

Gee, Biden and Barak stealing our votes to start a war in Pakistan? Something tells me that is more a McCain, Palin & Co. cup of tea.

Somehow...I really see the warrior stance as a last resort for the Democrats...not that they wouldn't call up a tank or two if needed.

I think there is a difference between the Parties especially around the area of church and state separation which is an area of great importance to our Democracy, Democrats are not so much needing to cross that line while the republicans for the most part, at least the repubicans with strong evangelical ties, feel the need to try to obliterate it...and it is these repubicans who have grown in power and influence in the last 15 to 20 years.....yeah, if only the less religious extremist republicans were front and center in the republican party it probably would look and feel a lot different....the religous extreme republicans and the neo-cons work mightly well together...warriors they are and forever they shall be....if there is no war to be had....well, we will just make one....seems to be their calling card...

yeah, there is a difference...and a big one in my book.....

I think it is interesting how each of us see this whole thing in a different perspective....

my new reminder until November is...

America is better than THIS(McCain & Palin & Co.)

hope you day is going well, Bonnie...ruth

Hi Ruth

I wish I could share your enthusiasm that starting a war was more a McCain/Palin cup of tea, but I don't. I am sure you can remember that Biden was one of the chief supporters of the Iraq war and was calling for an invasion as far back as 1998 long before Bush. I didn't hear much repudiation of that stance in his speech with his challenge to McCain regarding the toughness of Obama to be commander in chief.

As democrats, we should be questioning our own party as much as we do the republicans. To me Biden's appointment almost certainly means no end of war under Obama. It can also be interpreted as an assurance to the industrial military complex "powers that be" there will be no end to the expansion of military bases on foreign soil.
So if Obama is running on a platform of ending one war, then we must hold him to task that he does not start another one.

As far as separation of church and state goes, we've had evangelicals and fundamentalists since the beginning of the republic. They're not much further along now than they were then, although under Bush, they are stronger. But remember, most of these issues are nothing more than merry diversions from the real issues that we should be most concerned about.(To wit: the Palin Pregnancy broo ha ha)

Those are just some of my thoughts on the matter.
Oh I do agree we are better than This!!

Have a good evening Ruth.

Bonnie

Hi Bonnie,

You bring up interesting points for sure.

I feel also that we must question our own Party's issues and motives.

I completely disagree with your perspective on the evangelical situation and their power and strength of influence in our Government, yes under Bush they come closer to where they want to be. I do not believe for one minute they are but a merry diversion....

I have never believed Barak Obama's stance on being able to stop the war. I think the complications are too numerous, and there is big money and big interests involved.

I think both Parties promise much and deliver less, it has been this way for quite some time, I am not expecting big change, great things from Barak Obama but what I am expecting is an Administration that is not out to undermine our Constitution, our Justice Dept. I am not expecting more of the same....as the Bush Administration, and, I am, for sure, not, expecting worse in any way, on any issues.....and, I know, McCain and Palin, will deliver absolutely the same and it could even be worse on one issue that is very important to me....a woman's right to choose.

So I guess one picks their lesser evil(for lack of a better word) Mine is the Democrats..

have a great day, ruth

Hi Ruth

Ya it would be nice to vote FOR someone as opposed to having to vote AGAINST someone.(just one of the reasons I supported HC) I totally agree with being pro-choice, we've come too far to go backwards on that one. And the difference is that pro-choice means we don't try to impose what we think on someone else but the so called pro-lifers do try to impose their beliefs on everyone else.Oh well, don't get me started on that. :)

Enjoy your evening
