I watched the Republican convention. Most if it twice.
As the cameras scan the audience I am struck that it is almost exclusively white and from around 35 years old and older. Not a very diverse cross section of America, and not a wet eye in the crowd, at all, all night.
Very very different from the democratic convention.
You can still see it all on C-SPAN, both conventions without comentary!
I am not democrat or republican but one of the two candidates will win. They are the only two choices we will have.
To me of the two there is no choice so far.
At this point it's Obama.
Maybe someday we will have more than two just parties to choose from.

........than just two parties to choose from.
Now that I read it again. I think I'll stick the the slip.

Hey Kate, I guess this was a 'line'
We seem to have lost it in the OT changeover ;)
"She has a certain - 'je ne sais quoi' - that charms every One."
Of course, it could just as easily been a description of our loveable Char!
#178 ex OT, Char
"Have you ever noticed that a tornado has a quiet eye in it's center? I believe that there is a reason for this.........."
Yes I often think on that, Char, I like your story and would relate it to Meike's intention regarding Hanna.
In fact the thought did run through my mind, that if a group of 'at Peace' souls positioned in the Eye, which you actually experienced, could they 'walk' the tornado in whatever direction they chose?
the republicans are a party of right wing wackos and skinnies!

Kate's line has been included in Hera's boat. That's the reason why I could rhyme further on hers :)

The eye of God, the sun inside.....
Hi Diablo,
That latest quote is sublime:
"Another person added: I didn't know where the sun went at night, so I stayed up thinking about it until it dawned on me"
You inspired me herewith before I knew it lol
Mieke
Okay, Meike, lol, and I was rhyming with you, but got foxed by Kate on old OT when I, afterwards checked :)
Yo, Joan Armatrading, 'In These Times.'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgJLS8y-nnc
Thanks Ed for this beautiful song, wonderful lyrics too:
These are the times
Tears fill the back of your eyes
These are the times
The birds migrate
Across the skies
These are the times
What hope you had you forget
These wicked times
You're bound to feel
All sanity is lost
In these times everyone needs love
In these times do you pray to God
In these times everyone needs comfort
And would welcome a hand to hold
Compassion is the fire
That burns the hurt
That pains the soul
And though my eyes are so polluted
By the sight of lost desires
I can see you standing by
This is my fear
That distance will come between us
And it could mean nothing
Nothing
To get from here to there
We own the world
And everything that's in it
Let our love shine
Like glistening raindrops
Resting on a rose
In these times celebrate our love
In these times let's be thankful of
All the days we can spend together
And I'm happy to hold your hand
Your passion is the food
That feeds the hunger in my heart
And now my eyes are clearly open
No more longing for the past
Now I have you in these times
In these times everyone needs love
In these times do you pray to God
In these times everyone needs comfort
And would welcome a hand to hold
Your passion is the fire
That burns the hurt
That pains the soul
And though my eyes are so polluted
By the sight of lost desires
Good to have you in these times
I'm chugging along writing my book about the Sacred Feminine. It's very quantum in that it's taking shape as I put energy into it. Would that be shape shifting? In high school I had menstrual cramps so bad I had to stay home. Ovulation was just as intense but in a different way. I wrote about ovulation years ago as being on the hunt for sexual food...like werewolf under full moon. Cycles of the fertile Feminine body.
My question today to the women here on intentBlog is: How do women in different cultures take care of themselves during these intense cycles of bodily change? Any suggestions how to find such information?
In my life now as an elder cycles move differently -- without the physical extremes of intensity. Now I have spiritual cycles that move in equal intensity. I suppose it's a new level of fertility.
I'd love to hear from women about your experiences in this regard. I'm at pattysonglines@gmail.com. Thanks.
Trish!!
Hat's off to Bobby Jindal for his brilliant handling of Gustav's threat to Louisiana.
Daily Kos: Judgment Day
There's a long standing disconnect among Republicans rarely mentioned these days. The same party that implicitly assumes the government can and will responsibly manage nuclear weapons and trillion dollar wars, ridicules the idea that that same government could ever be entrusted to administer healthcare to uninsured children. Republican ideology holds that government is bad, and when they're running it, they're usually right.
If there was ever any doubt about the role good government Vs. bad government can play in the lives of We the People, events this week in Louisiana should put them to rest. The difference between a concerted effort orchestrated at the highest federal levels versus the half-ass, vacationing Bush and bumbling Brownie we witnessed in 2005 is quite literally the difference between life and death. Gustav didn't turn out to be as severe -- for New Orleans anyway -- as Katrina. But if it had, the preparation and response would have prevented untold human tragedy.
One of the key planners in that refreshingly impressive, bipartisan effort was Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal. America got a chance to get to know him this week, not through a carefully choreographed photo op or vetted campaign press release, but under the most grueling circumstances in his career. No matter how you may feel about his political ideology or religious beliefs, it's fair to say he made a good impression.
The McCain campaign is entitled to choose whomever they wish for a running mate. But in the event they win, given McCain's advanced age and medical history, the rest of us might have to live with that choice in the Oval Office for years. Tom Ridge was rejected because he's pro-choice, Mitt Romney was passed up because social conservatives have misgivings about his religion, Joe Lieberman belongs, barely, to the wrong party. If the crucial litmus test for Republican VP no longer includes national security experience or a strong background in macroeconomics, but does demand fealty to the religious right on creationism, reproductive choice, and gay marriage, Bobby Jindal is surely qualified.
Moreover, his likability, leadership skills, and solid reputation across party lines were well known to moderate and hardline conservatives including John McCain; that's why the Louisiana governor was reportedly on the VP short list. And yet the Republican candidate for President risked his candidacy and put the fate of this country in the hands of a former mayor of a sleepy Alaskan village.
Progressives won't vote for McCain no matter who he picks for a political sidekick. But Jindal's actions over the last week have demonstrated he has the physical stamina to take that emergency 3:00 AM phone call and maybe the judgment to go with it. In light of the ongoing trainwreck that is Sara Palin, John McCain might want to reconsider his own judgment in selecting her, or face the risk that We the People will make our own judgment on election day.

Doodleman, your post #20 made me chuckle in wondering if the parties are:
1) finally acknowledging that change is ever present
2) trying to affect change when it has always been happening
3) trying to change themselves
4) ...?
Then, from #21, I imagined that humility and confidence would be easy to spot amongst a crowd of ego and hubris, but, of course, there are often times when things get overwhelmed.
I swear, contemporary politics are so much better than prime time tv. Thanks for lightening my day!

Heath, I fell in love with Chrome. The UI Design is excellent.
I had some issues with Firefox recently, and was using Opera which is way better than IE though.
i am steamed at them...
the republicans will keep playing the fear factor, the war factor, the country first factor, and act like they are the party of God...
they will convenienly avoid the issues, the economy, the trillions wasted, the lives cut shortly needlessly...the severely damaged bodies and spirit coming home from iraq...
did u hear Laura B say last night that bushman has kept us safe? hmmnnn...didn't 9/11 happend on his watch? and has his wreckless war made america any safer or made us more friends abroad...especially in oli-rich mid-east? go figure!
yo...say no to republicans...throw the bums out!
hi mieke!
Hi derek
There was just a very compelling discussion on C-span by republican women saying NO
to the sexism that has been displayed toward Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin. Would that our own democratic women had done so. Their message was if you wish to disagree on the issues fine, but leave the sexism
behind.
I applaud you ladies on that score. I still do not agree with Palin's position on reproductive choice for women or her position on the environment. So I don't think the majority of women will cut off their nose to spite their face, however that cliche goes.
b
yo Johnny Mac...american women are not as dumb as u think...u are so desperate...to keep us in the bush era for 4 more yrs...4 more yrs we cannot afford...
and how on earth can u pick someone as unknown and unfit as this yahoo hillbilly hockey mom? and at 72...u are older than my dear granpa...retired in the caymans ...and older than most people i know...get real ole man!
yo #29...(multi) dude...most newcomers have a few words of introduction...they just don't blast in acting like ole buddies!
*Chrome* browser seems like a winner to me. I was getting desperate, so desperate I had fallen back on IE for the while! jeez, even as I write this post, I see in-built spell-checker. It's all carefully explained and hasn't thrown me a bit in it's much more sensible function.
Thanks Tiger, thanks Heath, just what I was waiting for. :))
Hi, all,
just reading your comment Bonnie about the sexism issue around Hillary and Palin.
First, if Hillary Clinton had won the race and not Obama, Palin would not have been picked, period.
So, the fact that the Republican's wanted to take advantage of Hillary's loss by choosing this particular female candiate.....she was explicitly picked for her sex, as far as I can see. Most of the women I have spoken with seem to agree that the repubicans choice of Palin is not a compliment to our gender or even a reason to celebrate, they feel the pick of her for this particualar office at this particual time in this particular race is completely sexist in and of itself.....but they go on to say.....first, they do not blame Palin or fault her for taking the position...why not, they say, but they sure as heck think McCain and fellow republican strategist have no qualms using women and the issues of women as fodder to distract from the wars, the deficit, and all the other very important issues of our Nation.
Palin, the woman, the mother, the anti-abortionist, has stole the show, all the shows, she is all the wonder and all the talk..even her 17 year old child is on display...oh, but we aren't supposed to mention that are we?....she is the female show horse for the republicans national covention of 2008......god, we women, have never had it so good!!!
gee, all of american will tune in tonite to see if the filly jumps all her fences, to see how she performs....the bets are on......she is the best little filly in the land!!!!!
yes, we women should be proud....that the republicans can use and abuse our gender and make it look like we love it even asked for it!!

Late-Summer Night Dream (collaboration)
I had a dream
one summer night
The flapping curtains aiding
Thrilled me - filled me with stormy thoughts.
a prayer for no rain
winds of change, a distant hurricane
storms brew, unleash their fury
manifesting in counterclockwise fashion
autumn clouds as dark as crows
yet swirling in silence
death in the skies
What goes around comes round
illusions drown
I said to the storm as I closed my eyes
The better to see
this feeling i feel
I stalked through the rain as grim as a fay
I skip through summer rain, autumn catch me now
I make myself translucent, and outrun my skin
Sheet lightning plays proxy the obscurate Sun
till all around me I see
Unlicensed liquidity
That Hurricane Gustav is uniting me.....
deep down we all know
It can unite people to act as one at the right moment......
Let your words enslave no one, and the heavens will hush themselves
to go away and come back again when it is safe there to stay....
the sun breaks through and hope restored
Oh Oh Jupiter! trine the Great Benefic knows not fear
your seagulls keen and bank their turns, to chase the clouds northwest
Don't hold me, let me flow, there are important messages to be shipped, to go...
The Brit waits now with bated breath
while Hanna seems to be the next threat......
O flighty Hanna fickle, fey
Ike is coming, get out of the way
O Hanna you harlot, how many more of your kin follow in your wake?
She has a certain - 'je ne sais quoi' - that charms every One.
and He is on her heels to partake in what she begun....
Yet driven are they by This Passionate Sun

Hey Bonnie
I missed that one.
I am watching the convention now on C-SPAN. NO COMENTARY
I think it is obvious women are taking their place in all types of leadership roles. Same with the African Americans. The good ol' boys are played out and we will need a diverse group of leaders.
I hear much of the same things from the RNC as I did the DNC.
Change
yo bam
alternative fuels
tax breaks for the little guy
health care
fighting the good ol' boys, yo I'm so tired of the arrogance and ineffectualness of the good ol' boys
empowering the people
They just seem to have a different ways to get there.
This tells me the people want change and the leaders are trying to figure out how to create change.
It is our responsibility as individuals and citizens to continue to expect our leaders to change. To expect humility and confidence in our leaders.
If these candidates are just full of campaign promises and don't deliver then we FIRE them and get some more.
My gut tells me we have a better chance with Obama than McCain. If Obama gets in there and sits on his hands, he's out. He may be charming but we need things done.
McCain........yo, I just don't know, he seems to need people around him to energize his party, that he is distancing himself from. When I have looked in eyes lately and watched his countenance he don't seem too hot.
They all SAY the things we want to hear. It is up to us to keep them to it.
Obama is not our savior
McCain is not our saviour
an empower people is our hope

This is the same observation as last night.
As the camera pans the crowd it is overwhelmingly white and middle aged. Very small demographic.
Check it yourself.
Dear Ruth
I have found the spreading of the Palin Pregnancy rumor and the subsequent sexist remarks by the press and yes by democratic supporters to be most distastful. So I appreciated the remarks against sexism made by the republican women.
Ruth, I think the decision to pick Palin is a much more cunning and calculated decision than just to pick up disaffected Hillary voters or appeal to women. It was made to energize the tepid evangelical support for McCain by the neocon faction of the republican party, like campaign manager and Rove protege Steve Schmidt, to remain in power even when out of office. The same people who chose George Bush to run.
She was chosen for her reality defying position on abortion and sex education, her wanting to teach creationism as science, her position on climate change[even as the Artic ice cap separates from the adjacent land mass], her willingness to prove she is one of the boys and last but not least her ability to influence drilling in ANWR, even though by all reasonably optimistic estimates there is only 6 months to 1 year's supply there.
What choosing her shows most is a politics that once again subordinates any greater common good to a raw pursuit of power by using people they actually consider feeble minded.
Bonnie
Hey Bonnie
Have you heard of this site?

Hi Bonnie,
I agree with all you have said.
I have watched her speech she mentions that the only difference between a Hockey Mom and a Bull Dog was lipstick....I think it describes her determination to futher the causes she believes in quite accurately.
I have to say this was a very strange convention....or should we just call it....the let's get together and rip Obama nite....hee-haw!
anyway...the baby....I am sorry but all I wanted to do was reach into the tv and rescue that poor 5 month old baby from being passed from person to person in that noisy arena and put him to bed in his crib.......god, did that baby really need to be subjected to a political covention for hours on end?
Well we got to meet the whole family....even the boyfriend....I was wondering though
if he was commanded to appear or if he did it on his own accord?
McCain and his female bull dog VP...who woulda thought?
nite...all....ruth
the only way republicans can win is to play dirty...the politics of personal destruction...and they are good at it...but it won't fly this time...it's time to throw the bums out!
Now Diablo
If Obama does the same I will lose a lot of respect for him.
If either of the candidates run negative adds I may have to consider holding my vote back.
If a candidate speaks either directly or indirectly negative about the other then I may have to consider holding back my vote.
My vote is precious. I'm not gonna put it in any ol' ballot.

yo doodooman...
so if a guy kicks u in the ass, u are not gonna kick him back in the ass?
what, u are just gonna smile, take it like a girl and act prissy?
Hi derek
Yes I am very familiar with T. Boone and his plan. He's probably the smartest oil man ever.
Overall, it's a good plan even though I disagree with some of it....ya can't have everything.
A lot of people will be disparaging it because he just invested $12 billion in building a wind farm, has massive investments in nat gas etc. has bought up a major portion of the water rights in the western states and on and on and stands to profit. I personally don't mind profits.
The interesting thing is that neither party had a definitive plan until he came up with his which is amazing to me as energy descent and energy independence is one of the most pressing of issues facing us and the globe. This is one issue where the republicans have a somewhat better plan than the democrats. But yay! at least one positive thing has come from this year's political campaigns if they follow through. Well we will just have to demand it from whomever is elected right?
bonnie
The little baby did not seem to mind and slept thru the whole noisy night, as we all noticed where the camera went. What was funny was when the little sister held the baby and was licking her tongue with her hand as she put spit from her mouth onto the babies hair to hold it down. I wonder who sis saw do that? :-) mom? Then the camera went to mom Palin who had this look of sock as in, "Oh, my God, what is my daughter doing and everyone is looking?!" it was really cute. More of that would have worked, even from mom. They are acting like puppets, which is very scary, as one wonders who is really pulling the strings.
BTW: The Republicans will not win, no matter how they play, for Obama is our next President.
Isn't it interesting Yogi that one can go back and interview Sarah Palin's childhood friends, same with McCain, plenty of friends who know both of them, and yet their is no one in Obamas' past to interview, unless it's Ayers,Wright, or Rezko.
A true blank slate
"...yet their is no one in Obamas' past to interview, unless it's Ayers,Wright, or Rezko."#52
Because that's what the republican noise machine wants people to hear.
Anyway, Palin has her Rezko; Troopergate. Apparently she hired lawyers just tow days ago and her case is being investigated by a republican majority House Committee. Palin has her Ayers: Her and her husbands involvement with Alaska secessionist movement. She has her Wright; her church and pastor who are part of "Jews for Jesus" (anti-jew) fringe group. Only a couple of weeks ago she attended a hate speech by her pastor.
Too bad, these charges and SEVERAL more on Palin have more substances and grounded in reality than anything Obama was accused of.
Thanks Bonnie
We are closing the gap between where we are and where we are going, concerning our energy needs.

Hello from Google's Chrome!
love to y'all, h
OMG!!! I just watched McCain and he is a very beautiful person. I have fell in love with him! Now, I am confused and I may just not vote for either candidate if I cannot decide between McCain and Obama. McCain held true to himself (a person) and said it did not matter who thought of the idea of 'change' first, but he was going to embrace it as his own! OMG! This man is beautiful, even tho Obama went with his heart first. McCain is also very deep. Wow, now I am having a hard time. I love them both!
But I've heard, "The next President of the United States of America will be a young male." This I will believe, even if I choose to bail out and not vote now.
McCain is very beautiful....
Obama is too....

Hurricane Ike Update
"...if and how long Ike moves over Cuba will be a huge factor in his intensity beyond that point. However, giving some confidence in the longer range forecast is the fact that the new HWRF and GFDL (not on that plot), which both have landfall on Cuba, both shows conditions in the Gulf good enough for a rebound to Category 3, but then stalling beyond that. Obviously, it's not "good" for anyone to get a Category 3 hurricane. But the "good" thing from a forecasting perspective it that this seems to tie Ike into about a Category 3 once he's in the Gulf. Intensity forecasts are terrible, so I wouldn't nail that down. But the point is, models and an analysis of upper level conditions clearly support Ike rebounding off of Cuba, but conditions also seem to imply that he'll be capped. So, we can have fair confidence that Ike will be neither a minimal hurricane nor a Category 5 after his post-Cuba recovery... by mid-week... once he's into the Gulf.
... The bottom line is that the southern Bahamas and Cuba are under the most certain, direct, severe threat over the next few days. And Haiti, though they'll miss the worst of it, will see rain in the least-desired area... the northwest part of the island. Beyond that, Ike goes into the Gulf, but thereafter, it's anoyone's guess where Ike goes... but it's nearly impossible to get out of the Gulf without hitting somewhere. So, barring dissipation (highly unlikely) Gulf residents, stay alert."

That wouldn't me, Ed.
Hope NYC stays dry from Hanna's showers during the US Open Super Saturday games. I don't want the crucial games postponed to Monday because of her.

Federer goes to final. Nadal is down 2 sets to 0 when rain interrupted play. The game resumes on Monday.
Correction: Serena won the semi final, not the final(#66). The women's final is also postponed to Monday because of Hanna.
happy sunday all,
just read an intersting piece at huffpo...below
Hey Obama,
When George Stephanopolous asks you, as he just did on his show, What do you think of Sarah Palin's dig against community organizing in her convention speech?--for the love of everything precious, please do not just smile and say it's "curious..." and recount in a reasonable voice what you did.
That reply, on such a topic as this, is for wimps and losers.
Reply how you regard Palin's dig as offensive--an offense to the out-of-work steel workers whose lives you, as a community organizer, helped put back together.
Reply that Palin's sneering dig, and Rudy Giuliani's sneering dig, just show the same old Republican disrespect and cluelessness of the misery working people are suffering in this country.
Reply that it shows how Palin and the GOP (get the linkage?) have no answers on how to improve the hard times for working people brought on by the catastrophic enrich-the-wealthy policies of this administration.
Reply how the gap between the rich and working folk in this country is a yawning abyss--highest in a century. An outrage.
Reply how Palin and the GOP just don't get it, don't get how working people are being crushed by Republicans' ignorance and hostile policies.
Damn it all Obama, HAMMER BACK. Cut the cool zen smiling on such topics You're in a fight with people who are wrecking this country--it's not a policy chat. (These are people will actually try to hide their VP candidate from public scutiny. These are people who will use Big Lie tactics--what else can you call repeating a lie over and over, even when after it's been exposed?)
All the might of real suffering life is on your side, Obama--all the outrage. Use it"..sorry I didn't get the author's name but it is on huffpo today....
I have been listening and watching for how Obama and Biden will handle the repubs "hockey mom/pit bull" act, with lipstick, and, so far, all seems to be "quiet on the Obama/Biden front." Now, I have to admit as a HC supporter I know the repubs couldn't have used the lipstick attack dog routine with her, they would have come after her with some other angle, but with just as willing performer to deliver their goods and spiel.
The key here in this race is energy the ability to energize your base...Obama did that well against HC. The energy one needs to go up against HC is dramatically different then the energy one needs to go against the republican strategists who will go as low as they see fit...they have no qualms...after all, all is fair in love, war and god's will.
So Barak needs to know that using your intelligence to win a hard fought race is important it is also important to express that intelligence once in awhile with some gut wrenching points of view. For the most part Americans like the zen/calm touch but they relate to the gut wrenching heart felt point of view mix with a high level of intelligence thrown in for good measure...
Palin as a canidate has looks, timing, youth and fertility, we know she can read, well, since that is all America knows about her...minus the family stuff...is that she can read excellently what is written for her, so that means we know the republican strategists point of view(Rove & CO.) but we know nothing about Palin except that she is a willing lap-dog, I mean, pit-bull. She has yet to speak to this Nation as the vice presidential candidate in her own voice with her own words...I mean she could be a complete bimbo...for all we know, all fertile eggs and no substance...really.
okay, I have avoided my sunday chores for too long today..have a good one...ruth
although it is only what? 58 days till vote day, most have already made up their minds by now so I do not know how much pull Palin will have in luring votes her way or losing votes for that matter...

"Palin as a canidate has looks, timing, youth and fertility, we know she can read, well, since that is all America knows about her...minus the family stuff...is that she can read excellently what is written for her, so that means we know the republican strategists point of view(Rove & CO.) but we know nothing about Palin except that she is a willing lap-dog, I mean, pit-bull. She has yet to speak to this Nation as the vice presidential candidate in her own voice with her own words...I mean she could be a complete bimbo...for all we know, all fertile eggs and no substance...really."
And you call me snide! :) And....you said something bout tolerance?
Hope you be having a good day up there in the noreast!
:)
hi skinny,
I suppose I was a bit ruff, ruff, but what are we here in the lower 48 supposed to think? We only know how she delivers her written material. And now her handlers want her kept under lock and key away from the big bad press. What, is she in the witness protection program of the republican party?...what is all this protection business? After all, the lady delivered her zingers with gusto and a twinkle in her eyes, especially, after they got her some roaring applause. Hey, I believe the pit bull stuff...for sure, so I do not know why her handlers think she is not ready for the prime time....and I think it is fair to wonder if maybe she might be less of an intelligence that they, in fact, hoped she would be....I mean why else keep her under lock and key?
really, until we here in the lower 48 get to see and hear her in her own words with her own thoughts we are left....well, wanting for answers.
anyway, if you see her say hey...and I'm just wondering out loud....have a grand week and there are only 57 and 1/2 days left till the show down at the OK corral.
and remember American is better than THIS(McCain, Palin & Co.)....
it is clear to me that 'bama has lost his edge and...also...the election..
he needs to show fire and electricity in his message...but instead he looks more wimpish down the home stretch...too bad too sad...another Dem going down to defeat..
you gotto give it to the repubs, they know how to run a campaign..the dems suck at it...the repubs know how to win...the dems know how to blow wins...
shame on them...until they learn how to fight, they will remain pretenders...the repubs own the radioland...anywhere you go...the dems need to get in there and own a piece of the pie...
bushman did not field questions from the press in his first term...which cud haved clearly exposed his ignorance...now SP is being shielded for the next two months...or 56 days...
by the time we find out how shallow she may be...it will be too late..sorry press...sorry dems
the politics of fear will sucker the american dummies to vote republican...again...and barack will be runner-up just like AG and JK before him...
Jeez, Diab, yer sounding awful wimpish yerself!
Where's all that intent gone? It'll be a very close race. It might be lost for the sake of your sudden pessimism.......damn!
Indeed... Ed.

And some informed opinion on polls:
Patience, Poll-Watchers
If you peruse the comments in today's polling thread, you will see various sorts of proclamations about when John McCain's convention bounce will become meaningful (that is, when it can be described an actual shift in electoral preferences, rather than a temporary bounce). Some of these are exceptionally specific: "If Barack Obama isn't at 47 points in the Gallup Daily tracker by 2:51 PM on Wednesday, September 10th, then we're all d00mEd!!!".
Among the many difficulties that we face in this unique election cycle is figuring out exactly how long one should expect a convention bounce to last. Under ordinary circumstances, bounces are actually fairly persistent, lasting for perhaps several weeks:
[...]
... if the next couple of weeks are relatively newsless, I would not necessarily expect the bounce to fade all that quickly, and I would not necessarily be worried (as a Democrat) if it didn't.

Imagine there's Nobama...
It's easy if you try...
No one to pout and simper...
No one to wail and cry..
Imagine all the liberals..
Cal-ling Sara VP...
Their eyes all red with hatred...
As we righties watch with glee...
Imagine big ole ANWR...
Looking like swiss cheese...
As we drill for oil....
To run our SUV's...!!
Dayumm.....i'm excited! not much of a songwriter, but hey...if it makes a lefty choke on his or her breakfast...it's worth the effort! Kinda funny...when nobama is up in the polls...it gets trumpeted....when mac goes up...well...you know....we don't wanna read to much into this!
hehehehehehehe!!
:)
To imitate Baby D...whoahahahahahaahah!!!
The dems are gnashing their teeth over Rudy's sarcasm about Nobama's community organizing days. Now they are printing up T-shirts that say: "Jesus was a community organizer" "Pilate was a governor!"
hehehe...there is nothing funnier than getting under liberals skin! you know you're making headway when they start calling on Jesus!!
Its time for Deepaks 'fourth Jesus'! I'm telling you, it'll be a home run..they'll sell like hotcakes! Then after the election, when Nobama gets 'crucified' at the polls...all the little libs will sit home, clutching their book, eyes all puffy and sad...waiting for their Easter....4 years away....the door to the democratic tomb will roll back...and there will stand..(drum roll please) ST. Hillary!
Nobama is going down....can anyone say , c'mon now...let's all do it together..."EMPTY SUIT!!!"

We won't have a dream final. Nadal didn't make it. Looks like Federer is going to win this easily.
Serena won the women's final.
morning all,
the race is not over by a long shot. hey, ignorance is bliss and this Nation has been blissful for eight years...going for another four is not out of the question.
we, of the, not so blissful, know that sooner or later ignorance gives the blissful it's bill, and it won't be in tax rebates.
Palin got 1200 bucks for her folks for something or other...let me see 1200 bucks these day is gone in the blink of an eye. I wonder how much we will get?
We...owe trillions, we are sending a billion to Georgia for aid, that might be in the form of weaponry though, frannie and freddie are being bought out by the government, indy bank too, and I think they figured that there would be a bunch more to bail out...Afganistan...can't forget them...billions there....yes, okay....I give...the republicans can grow money on trees....not to worry...a piece of cake.
The Dems need to step up to the plate, big time, and close this deal. Or, frankly, there will be hell to pay in the Democratic Party, for sure.
oh, the tangled web we weave.
oh, gotta run it seems a pit bull is hoovering round my ankles.....yup, yup..yup...ruth
Ruthie....pit bulls don't hover around your ankles....they bite you right in the ass!!
oh, thanks for the tip but I am fully prepared, went out after her speech and bought meself good quality sass pads....and, yes, there is plenty of hoovering going on with this pit bull....
have a grand day...must get busy now...ruth
skinny (i mean fatty) is so gleeful...so happy...these days...he's jumpin' on and off his big, ole tractor...in the fields of kentucky like village idiot...they nabes cud see...but if more americans come to their senses...watch this jovial ha-ha turn into a wild ravenous, snarly pitbull...from which the nabes will run..fast...for cover...

Taxpayers Also Funded Husband's, Kids' Travel...
Alaska State Finance Director:
"We Cover Expenses Of Anyone Who's Conducting State Business. I Can't Imagine Kids Could Be Doing That"...
And this is the same Palin as a mayor of Wasilla who charged rape victims for their own forensic exams to ...cut taxes worth $5,000 - 15,000.
Seems like she does have a "rape" problem, given she is also against women's right to choose even in the case of rape and incest.
And also, as a gov. she cut funds to teenage moms in need of help.
America blog:
"I couldn't even believe this article, it's so creepy and out there. But in fact, Palin was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska from 1996 to 2002. And according to an Alaskan news article in the local Wasilla paper in the year 2000, the City of Wasilla, under Mayor Palin, charged rape victims for their own forensic tests. Most Alaskan municipalities picked up the tab themselves, but not Wasilla, the article notes. You see, the city of Wasilla, the article notes, didn't want to "burden" taxpayers with having to support victims of rape. Yes, they were more interested in lowering taxes. It would have cost the city between $5,000 and $14,000 a year to pay for the rape victims' police medical exams. And if the City of Wasilla, circa the year 2000, wants to go there in terms of balancing rape vs, burdening taxpayers, you should know that each and every Alaskan gets a check from the state government each year, it contains their portion of that year's oil revenues. The latest check, I read, was for over $2,000. I think the citizens of Wasilla had the money."

Hurricane Ike Update
by millwx

"One final note, one thing I appreciate about the dKos community is the concern for others and the sensitivity towards NOT having a typical Amero-centric attitude. Please be aware that I'm focusing on a FORECAST here. Cuba CONTINUES to get thrashed by Ike (Havana, not THAT close to the center, recently reported hurricane force wind gusts). I am not ignoring them out of disregard. Rather, from a forecast standpoint, Cuban impact is a foregone conclusion. I'd encourage everyone to be knowledgable of the impact Ike has on Cuba, give thoughts and prayers (if you pray) for them, and, if you can, help in the relief effort in some way (donations to reputable relief agencies being the easiest, of course). If anyone has any links to such relief agencies, feel free to include them in the comments. And let's remember, too, that Haiti, the Turks and Caicos, and the southernmost Bahamas were also hit hard."
Updated: Mayor Palin Charged Victims for Their Own Rape Kits
by Steven R
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/9/8/20552/56258/308/591588
Sarah Palin has yet another documented case of hypocrisy.
This was before she was picked for VP, now that the "mavericks" McCain/Palin are the "change" candidates, not Obama:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jO6dmBm1SFw
Transcript:
Kudlow: McCain is ahead in Alaska but its only 45-40 over Obama. It's a traditional Republican State. Why isn't this a bigger lead for Mac? What's he gotta do up there to make sure you carry Alaska?
Palin: That's a good question and you did your homework Larry, that's impressive. Usually such a red state up here, its a no-brainer that the R is going to take the cake up here. This is a little bit different situation now with Obama's message resonating even with Alaskans. That being change and no desire for embracing of the status quo and politics as usual. But something different, something dynamic, and charismatic. That does resonate well, that message of Obama's.
PS. Of course, she also loved Obama's Energy plan before she was picked by McCain.
Markos: Fiscal responsibility you can believe in
What a sweet gig:
"Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office, charging a "per diem" allowance intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business.
The governor also has charged the state for travel expenses to take her children on official out-of-town missions. And her husband, Todd, has billed the state for expenses and a daily allowance for trips he makes on official business for his wife."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/08/AR2008090803088.html
At first I was wondering, "why didn't I try that at my old job, demanding travel pay when staying at my own place?" Then I realized why -- it would've been a scam, and I would've been fired. Funny how that "accountability" thing doesn't seem to operate when a politician is elected to high office.
Now to be fair, Palin only made $125,000 a year, or 1/3rd of a Cindy McCain dress. That is really poor; at least $4.875 million away from middle class. And don't forget she "chose life", so who cares if she has the ethics of a sewer rat?
Instead of passing judgment on Palin, we should just be thankful it wasn't John McCain billing the state of Alaska to live at home(s). He would've bankrupted the state.

"I've gotta admit. As a scam artist, she's pretty good."
hi there all,
I must say after reading all the hoopla about Palin and her dramatic entrance onto the political playground, a part of me is deeply concerned that our Nation has, in fact, lost it's cool, it's intelligence, it's smarts, and has simply gone to the dogs, so to speak, and, maybe, Palin's little jokey, joke, about comparing herself to a pit bull has more truth than not, in terms of the majority of our Nation's voter's taste in what and who should represent our Nation's best interests.
Now, I am not sure how Palin is going to fly once she is out from under the republican witnes protection program and folks have a chance to see her up close and personal. But, she is no shrinking violet, that's for sure.
Anyway I stopped by moveon.org for a look-see and I wanted to leave them a message telling them that they had better get their militancy up and going, again, I am sure after Hillary's defeat they thought they were home free...but...ah....another woman, and, although, she is not really a democrat's cup of tea she is just the flavor of the month for many other voters and she has added "actual excitement" to John McCain so much so that you get the feeling they wouldn't mind if he changed places with her...I think they would actually like seeing Palin on top and McCain on the bottom "of the ticket," that is.
But, what I am enjoying is that when the Obama movement thought their biggest hurdle was over in defeating Hillary Clinton for the number one spot,
the republican strategist pull a fast one on them. We, Hillary Clinton supporters, never doubted they were working diligently on their strategy, that they were as serious as a terminal cancer in their focus on their goal. We knew from what we spoke and we knew Hillary Clinton knew and more important was ready, but what she wasn't ready for was what her Party did to her. They calculated that they didn't need her and what she had to offer this race...their motto was Barak Obama has it all...he is new, he is change, he will bring the change that Washington needs, not Hillary Clinton..the Clintons are part of the old school problem.....but, it looks like Americans might be seeing exactly what they want in Palin and it is not anything new and it is not change, it is so old....in fact almost ancient in terms of vision...who woulda thought?
Now, it is not that Barak Obama doesn't have it all over McCain/Palin & Co. in substance and in policy and issues but that can all be overlooked by an American public that seems to be dancing with delight that the republican's could pull a Palin out of their hat at such short notice...but we Hillary Clinton supporters know that Palin was on that short list for quite some time...just waiting for the right moment....to be plucked and ready.
Now, Palin's bounce may just be that and Barak Obama's numbers will continue to go up in the polls, we will see, but, I bet, Barak Obama's campaign has learned a few new things this past week.
have a great day ruth.....

Dear John
I figured that was the Rabbi's choice, though I did wonder a little.
Dear ruth
104 is a damned good blog post.
Dear skinny
The truth is: the only reason the US has any remaining claim to greatness is because of the energy and action that takes place within the compassionate selves of people who call themselves liberals and independents. It is such people who made the US in the first place. If, in the 1700's, this country had been primarily a population of conservatives, it wouldn't have become a nation until the BE released its hold on its Empire 70 years ago or so. So feel better, but your assumption that conservative power is a good thing for the US is a fantasy. One of my co-workers appears normal in almost every respect, but she votes Rep. When I told her about Palin and the attempt to remove books from the library, she said, "What's wrong with that?" Yet I know her well enough to know that if someone came into her home and told her what books to read or not read, she'd be in an uproar. Conservatism is mainly about power -- unwarranted power over others. A need to express power to that degree over others is always based on an underlying sense of fear and insecurity. It is starting from a weakness. There's never enough vision and strength to fight the hardest fights when you come from a base position of weakness. Over and over again, we hear about people being tested in their lives and coming out of the ordeal more liberal than before. We don't hear about people going conservative as the result of a life-threatening ordeal. And yet I'm sure people do make that switch. I think it's not talked about because there's a sense in a person who's made such a change, that they've retreated from life to a fearful place. Palin's pitbull metaphor is a good one. If you've ever handled pitbulls, and I have, you know if they're trained and treated generously, they're loyal, happy animals. But when they're treated with fear and control, they mirror that back as threatening behavior. Virtually every conservative I've met is reacting to fear at a deep level, all the time. They act rather like pitbulls sometimes, as a result. But all they are is scared and don't know it.
love, h
It is so groovy seeing Ruth taking a stand on the issues and not the personalities!
I must admit to being fearful of the "average" American's ability to actually vote their interest instead of their fear (of "terror", open-mindedness, and the golden lie of compassion for others being weakness).
But I must admit, my people, the uneducated homeless savages you see drinking in alleyways, have suffered the ravages of power, and the only language they know is power ("turn around, spread your feet, put your hands on the back of your head . . ."); so instead of voting for a government that may actually try to raise them up out of poverty and despair, they will vote against their interests b/c war is the only outlet they understand.
Being so angry at themselves they vicariously unleash their frustration on destroying "evil terrorists," totally unaware of the fact that public housing is being, and has been, defunded to pay for war and to allow the rich to get even richer.
You people better hope God comes kicking some human ass pretty soon, b/c if I ever get the poor, widowed, and orphaned strangers rounded up we will take those million dollar houses up in them there hills, and use your money and flags for the campfires!
Of course you can still have dinner with us!
All are welcome!
pax vobiscum
says one sick fat dude..."Liberalism, is not to be compromised with. It is to be smashed, defeated, annihilated. It is a sickness...and will drag a great country straight down the tubes of mediocrity and dependence.
Obamania...is a scourge..."
i guess under bushness...he cannot afford health insurance...so his illness is allowed to go untreated and that is a common pesonal tragedy right across this country amongst the poor and dumb...! tsk!
Hi Heath,
re# 104 :)
I would like to just repeat a part of your's that is very important, especially, to our conservative fellow Americans who have let themselves be poisoned by the Rovian mindset that liberalism is akin to smut. Although, along with a good majority of the American public they seem to have forgotten their...beginnings, their roots, their lucky break that they were born with the silver spoon of freedoms alreay fought and died for by those liberal minded men and women you are speaking of....those men and women would be so disappointed in what Bush, Cheney, McCain, and Palin stand for, that, they probably would not recognize the Democratic Nation that they helped birth over 200 years ago....
The truth is: the only reason the US has any remaining claim to greatness is because of the energy and action that takes place within the compassionate selves of people who call themselves liberals and independents. It is such people who made the US in the first place. If, in the 1700's, this country had been primarily a population of conservatives, it wouldn't have become a nation until the BE released its hold on its Empire 70 years ago or so.".......you can say that again.
have a great evening everyone, ruth
Dear ruth
You have the gifts of clear vision and thought, a no-nonsense approach to politics, dry humor, lots of real heart, and a strong, attractive writing style. I pray that you will author a blog one day. Soon, I really really hope.

All Journey is pointless...
From the perspective of the seventh stage realisation... at the seventh stage one has not arrived from any place that could possibly have been left from at all...
I began here and arrived here is not the case at all
You have just simply allowed a bit more light through to shine and show you some more of what you already are..
The totality of you is always already
Still....
Regardless of the pointlessness of our journey
God's suit case is always already packed..
love

Gotta love this:
McCain Campaign: Palin Isn't a Pig
by BarbinMD
Credit where credit is due to the McCain campaign's rapid response team. The moment they heard that Barack Obama was talking about pigs, they rushed in to object to his calling Sarah Palin names:
"You can put lipstick on a pig," he said to an outbreak of laughter, shouts and raucous applause from his audience, clearly drawing a connection to Palin's joke. "It's still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still going to stink after eight years."
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080910/ap_on_el_pr/obama_lipstick;_ylt=Ag9QKmEKSqD0SVdZ0MzRhJ6s0NUE
And while the McCain campaign immediately demanded an apology for this perceived insult, the Obama campaign declined, pointing out that Obama had been talking about John McCain. Which raises an interesting question: why didn't the McCain campaign object to John being compared to a rotting fish?
What the heck *are* they charging Alaska for?
by kos
More on Sarah Palin's great scam of the state of Alaska, charging the state of Alaska for "travel" expenses while staying at home, all while making a big show of "saving taxpayer money" by getting rid of her private chef (all mooseshit, of course).
From the Anchorage Daily News, 7/29/2007, via Lexis/Nexis:
::::::::::;;;;;;;;;;
"Holding a special session in Anchorage last month cost the state at least $103,500, according to the head of the Legislative Affairs Agency.
Criticized for adjourning the regular session without renewing a program that gave cash payments to low-income seniors, legislators called the one-day meeting on June 26 [...]
Legislators earned a per diem of $278 each. The money is meant to be used on meals and hotels, she said, and is a little more than legislators would get in Juneau.
Holding the session in Anchorage costs about $2,000 more per day for per diems, which are based on rates set by the federal government, she said.
The overall price tag struck Gov. Sarah Palin as too high.
"That makes absolutely no sense, that a seven-hour meeting costs our Legislature over $100,000," Palin said. "What the heck were they charging the state for then?"
::::::::;;;;;;;;
Yeah! What were they charging the state for? Were they living at home, yet squeezing travel expenses out of it? Were they bringing the whole family down to Anchorage on the government's dime? Were they staying in $707 per night hotels?
It's important those questions get answered, otherwise, this episode will start to look suspiciously like ... hypocrisy. I know, I know, this is all hard to believe given that she eats mooseburgers and chose life, but there it is.
This episode may just have bought Sarah Palin another two weeks of isolation from the media.
Meghan McCain: "No one knows what war is like other than my family. Period."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMxp5UkeGCc
I was pretty sure there were other people in the military, but apparently not.
They must not have any TVs in any of those seven houses.
What a frickin' jerky thing to say. You could just go with hocking a loogie on military familes next time, Meg.

A wounded veteran responds to Meghan McCain's Quote:
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/9/9/19014/97611/267/592654
"This morning Meghan McCain sat down for an interview as a McCain surrogate on the today show. While making her way through an answer about her father she stated: "No one knows what war is like other than my family. Period."
...
"This is not a simple mistake or a gaffe, this is a freudian slip and it gives us an insight into how Sen. McCain feels about the service of those of are not him. Sen. McCain has shown us by his voting record that we don't matter."

Good News, Everyone!
by Keith Olbermann
Tue Sep 09, 2008
My apologies for the randomness of the Futurama reference.
Rachel Maddow's MSNBC hour premiered last night to spectacular ratings. Nothing should ever be assumed (we could each get 47 viewers tonight), but this is, as they say, auspicious.
Keith Olbermann's diary :: ::
The full ratings are posted in several locales, but here are the headlines:
Rachel drew 1,543,000 viewers in total at 9 PM last night. Not only was that better (by 160,000) than Larry King, but it was the second highest number of total viewers in Primetime, not counting Fixed News.
Modesty precludes me from saying who was ahead of her on that list.
The "advertisers' number" - the number of viewers aged 25 to 54, were also outstanding. 483,000 of the so-called buyers' demo tuned in, again, beating Larry (by 100,000) and second for any primetime show not on Fox (and she even outdrew Shepard Smith's 7 PM audience over there at The Zombie Channel).
Rachel is grateful, but too busy trying to improve over last night's debut to dwell on last night, which I assume doesn't surprise any of you.
Obama Camp Slams Racist, Pro-Pedophile McCain Ad: "Downright Perverse"

Republicans are a party of fear! fear! fear!
how ironic that they keep using 9/11 to stir up fear! when 9/11 happened on their watch...
SP will give first TV interview on 9/11... how convenient, how shameful...
in america today...the words Republicans and Bush/McCain are like curse words!
Olbermann rocks!
And my love RM, oooooo,
she is just dreamy;
damn,
I fell in love with a "man"

Late-Summer Night Dream (collaboration)
I had a dream
one summer night
The flapping curtains aiding
Thrilled me - filled me with stormy thoughts.
a prayer for no rain
winds of change, a distant hurricane
storms brew, unleash their fury
manifesting in counterclockwise fashion
autumn clouds as dark as crows
yet swirling in silence
death in the skies
What goes around comes round
illusions drown
I said to the storm as I closed my eyes
The better to see
this feeling i feel
I stalked through the rain as grim as a fay
I skip through summer rain, autumn catch me now
I make myself translucent, and outrun my skin
Sheet lightning plays proxy the obscurate Sun
till all around me I see
Unlicensed liquidity
That Hurricane Gustav is uniting me.....
deep down we all know
It can unite people to act as one at the right moment......
Let your words enslave no one, and the heavens will hush themselves
to go away and come back again when it is safe there to stay....
the sun breaks through and hope restored
Oh Oh Jupiter! trine the Great Benefic knows not fear
your seagulls keen and bank their turns, to chase the clouds northwest
Don't hold me, let me flow, there are important messages to be shipped, to go...
The Brit waits now with bated breath
while Hanna seems to be the next threat......
O flighty Hanna fickle, fey
Ike is coming, get out of the way
O Hanna you harlot, how many more of your kin follow in your wake?
