The Economics of Sin and Virtue

Deepak Chopra - September 18, 2008

An article in the Washington Post On Faith section in response to their question: Are the economy's recent financial failures also moral failures? Are credit and debt religious issues? Do you have faith in the economy?

Money lies closer to people's souls than they like to admit. John D. Rockefeller, Jr. destroyed other men's fortunes as he ruthlessly built his own, but he assuaged his conscience by believing that God gave him every penny.

Aloha Deepak

It is an ending of a old civilization and beginning of a new one. The game of musical chairs, where one is always being removed so that there are not enough seats is over. Today it is to be like the birds where the view is higher. love patty

Old Testament or the Tanak(5 books of Moses,Prophets, and Writings) perspective on the economics of sin and virtue, enjoy brother Craig!

Deuteronomy 25:13-16: “You must use accurate scales when you weigh out merchandise, and you must use full and honest measures. Yes, use honest weights and measures, so that you will enjoy a long life in the land the Lord your God is giving you. Those who cheat with dishonest weights and measures are detestable to the Lord your God.”

Proverbs 11:1-5: “The Lord hates cheating, but he delights in honesty. Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. Good people are guided by their honesty; treacherous people are destroyed by their dishonesty. Riches won’t help on the day of judgment, but right living is a safeguard against death. The godly are directed by their honesty; the wicked fall beneath their load of sin.”

Hello Deepak and Everyone,

Like you I really do not know how our individual books are checked and balanced in terms of our soul's journey, I just know that I am accountable for all my debits and credits, in the end it is my signature. I really can't speak for someone else nor they for me and I like that, so unlike the financial system today where one can pass the buck when you come up short I think in the "real" world there will be no passing of the buck.

It is your buck, how did you earn it, spend it, share it, not share it, how much of your life's attention did you devote the bucks?

Sometimes, like now, with the election, with the financial crisis, and, in our news, closer to home, three young children, 3 yrs., 1 1/2yrs and a 10 month old, are in the burn unit of a hospital. They were found alone in a burning home at 3 in the morning, the mother claims she was out in the front of her house and didn't realize the situation...but all I can think of are those three little girls and the suffering they will endure if they survive....and I wonder about life, death and suffering especially, in a situation such as this when it comes to children....children, vulnerable, completely dependent upon someone, anyone, to look out for them, protect them from harm, cherish them, in fact, and, no one was there....they were alone. It is times like this when it all seems to much craziness to even take in, or think about, that I say....enough..."I" do not have an answer, or even a bad opinion, "I" have nothing to offer, "I" have fallen short....that is when "I" leaves for a time and is replaced with the simple act of being, unknowning. For, it seems, all our discussions, thoughts, opinions, points of view are really just our playthings, the luxury of mind and matter, but, then, there are times when it all just comes up short....there is no comfort in the not knowing but there is no suffering either, it just is....

ponderings.....ruth

#2 Thank you. This is all that I have right now. :-)

Love, Char

Thanks for letting my comments through even though some were held for days. Your special attention is a mystery to me. Please be assured that when I ask questions it is done with the utmost sincerity and I am always trying to be polite.

Maybe we should bury the hatchet until after the new president is known. The whole world would be in dire straights should McCain get elected, and even worse, should something happen to him. Most of the posters here, along with the contributors, agree that church and state should be separated and in that respect Sarah Palin is one scary woman. She seems to think they must go hand in hand.

To many the Chopras are doing a great job with their political opinions, questions and comments, although a prayer for the starving children would probably be more appropriate than for Tom Brady.

Here a bit more about that scary Mrs:

How Religion Guides Sarah Palin

Rev. Tim McGraw, Palin's pastor when she became mayor of Wasilla, said believers look to Israel for signs of the coming end times and where they are in God's plan. That would undoubtedly influence Palin's approach to foreign policy, McGraw said.

Has the countdown begun for IB?

What is the foundation on which we build our house? There's a nice parable about this in the Bible that I learned when young in Bible School but have no idea where to find it now. Is the foundation built on solid rock or shifting sands? It looks to me like we are moving into a new intensity of "judgement day"...another aspect of Karma. Is it too late to build a new house while the old one tumbles? Will most people's identity crumble in the rubble?

Survival of the fittest takes on new meaning and it has nothing to do with $$$$.

It is all a matter of faith dear friends. The Well of Water springing up from within will provide when it's not capped by your own 'heavy' believes. One just needs to make room in one's thoughts for its inspirations and then 'breathe' out.

'Cast your rod over the harbour wall. The first fish you catch will have a gold ring in its mouth!' You can't get much more immediate results to Intent than that. If you do not believe 'gold ring', ie detach from the outcome, then that is what you will get. If Death gets the upper hand that is what you will get, too in all of its degrees. Death is what ultimately drives us and translates into so-called security of Treasure on Earth. Does Life stand a chance with us when we give Death the ultimate credence? Some Intent!!

I preach to myself, oh yay!

Sufficient for the day, dear Hearts.

It seeks like Shmuel, us Gentiles anyway, rather pick and choose what scripture is important, like everybody always gets riled up about the "not stealing," and having a "justice" system bit, but adultery slips off the crime and punishment radar, people jump for joy when quoting scripture to justify interest rates but suddenly start talking about "the real world" (or how those laws don't apply to "my kind") when speaking of releasing people from debt, people have even used scripture to say they do not need a church to mediate God's word to them, but then they go and build churches!

I try to not be picky and choosy, and Lord knows I don't attend a church, but my life, and political philosophy, accept as true the teachings of the Old and New Testaments, and in particular Isaiah lays out what I try to write quite plainly . . .

I hope I have the privilege of meeting you in person one day brother!

Shalom

in particular Isaiah lays out quite plainly what I try to write . . .

i agree with the poster of #5...

that woman is fu@$#*g scary, to say the least, dude!

Dear Richard,
Are you psychic? And how many people are psychic here at IB? Or is it just my harmony with the Dharmadhatu that makes me think it so? And how will I know? And why do I care? You made me laugh.

(I rolled my pennies just today.)

Dear Deepak,
I liked what you said in your last paragraph. It reminded me of the Buddha's Anguttura Nikaya Sutra: The results of karma cannot be known by thought, and so should not be speculated about. Thus thinking, one would come to distraction and distress. Therefore, Ananda, do not be the judge of people, do not make assumptions about others. A person is destroyed by holding judgements about others.

I think in this day and age we analyse, critique, and communicate it. But what the Buddha is talking about is the 'holding' which causes resentments and anger and hate. It is a valuable AA precept to get rid of your resentments to your sponsor by communicating them. You don't give yourself reason to drink again. :)
