Crisis as a Test of Faith

Deepak Chopra - October 15, 2008

An article in the Washington Post On Faith section in response to their question: Fears about the economy. Anger on the campaign trail. Which concerns you most? How should we respond?

Two crises are overlapping right now, one economic, the other political. The absence of leadership magnifies the threat of recessions. Most religious people approach crises as a test of faith. The setup is modeled on various scriptures. There is David (God tests if a king will give in to lust and betray a friend) Job (God tests a righteous man to see if he will remain righteous), Peter (God tests if a disciple will betray his master), and Jesus himself (God tests if his son will make the ultimate sacrifice). There are many others, of course, beginning with Adam and Eve.

Nice!

Peace

The Cartoon Network:

I just watched this show called "Moral Orel" and on this show this little boy is persuaded to sing "I hate you Jesus" by a Jewish school play producer.

Wow! Sickening.

On a related not: "Through neglect of its Christian minority, India is allowing religiously motivated violence to threaten its rise" http://www.newsweek.com/id/164081

To which I reply: Why are Christians in India anyway . . .; oooo, that is right, the Jewel of the Crown eh. That darn white man's burden is sure an onerous load . . .

And we obviously do not have to document "our" problems with the Muslim faith:

as we know Judaists run into a few problems of their, well our, own.

Religion is getting quite tiresome!

Peace

"On a related note":"

God is mean and terrible to us sometimes. But it doesn't mean I love Him any less. It just means my understanding of Him is limited.

When Mohamed Ali got punched out in the ring, he had to fight his way back from "Never Never Land" and stand up before the count of ten. He was able to do this because of the firm foundation he had already built and because of his previous practise. His "faith" was built on the foundation. It enabled him to get back in the ring even though the unknown confronted him in every bout.

To keep things simple - All is Vasudev. Therefore - practise, practise, practise (one's religious precepts).

OK, I am just trying to make sure I understood this article. Is it correct to interpret it as saying that the story of Job in the bible and other such stories of people being tested are essentially frivolous, meaningless, unhelpful tales. Rather than strive to understand the meaning in these stories, we should focus on Obama's deamenor as an example of "adult", mature behavior in the face of crisis.
Totally disagree and I am surprised that Deepak has greatly oversimplified the lessons in these biblical tales. The story of Job, for example, has been debated by scholars endlessly. Some have interpreted it to mean that God cares about Job and actually suffers greatly to watch him suffer but is not always able to be helpful.
I am not sure with the story of Peter, but my own interpretation would be that the "devil" was testing him. Same with Jesus in the desert, it was the devil who came to test him. Certainly that is a different angle to look at these tales--that there are good forces and bad, I don't think these stories should be so easily discarded.

#6 Hi Olivia
How we perceive our so-called physical demise or that of another seems to be the fulcrum as I see it. It is we who give that a value and 'ETERNAL God' who can only stand by.

Job is a long story to decipher. Peter didn't fancy the Cross next door to the man who knew everyone's destiny, not least his own. There is paradox arising and actually a dilemma for Peter in what was required of him destiny-wise. He could become love in one fowl swoop, for which Jesus was already the chosen role, or he could spread it out along time even unto the Church of Rome. Them2!!!

In my opening vein and with a leap of my own amazing reasoning, lol (I haven't got time or space to lead you elaborate-minded educatives there ;)
simply this:- d'evil is but the abbreviation of 'death evil' We each have a destiny which hangs upon our perception, (not immutable) of it like some pendulum. Try it, and tell me, how does that swing you ;)

As for the crisis, Deepak; here we have a total Eclipse of the Sun. (Go'd****)

Ed,

Interesting thoughts, and yes these biblical stories are quite complex (like what you are saying about the story of Peter).
As far as the article goes, It is obvious that Deepak admires Barack Obama's cool-headedness. It is just hard to understand why he chooses to go about juxtaposing Obama's calm with what he feels is a "religious reaction" to crisis. People will always crave faith. And a deeper understanding. That is human nature. Sure, Obama can be credited for remaining calm and level-headed--I certainly appreciate that, but I also disagree with many of his ideas. Sometimes I feel like Obama tries to act like he is "above it all", like when he is debating McCain, it is like he tries to estabblish that he is even above the idea of debating ( at least last night I particularly noticed that) .
He made some statement last night about some issue saying something to the effect of "look, this divides us" as if to say look let's just put aside these petty things called opinions and become unified. Give me a break--I am not sure that is admirable. Sometimes I feel that his intellect is quite admirable but that, like all of us, he has certain things lacking. It is a shame he does not have a little more hot-headedness to combine with his cool-headed reasoning. If he did, wow I would probably like him a lot.

When Peter said , three times, "I don't know him" I think sometimes it is the rational mind denying the new born spiritual one. His new born spiritual one came when the Holy Ghost descended upon him.

I think when Christ said he would make Peter His rock and build His church upon him, it was precisely because of that doubt that wanted proof, and that He did not encourage blind faith.

Dear Ed,

Did you say we each have a destiny that is determined by our perception (which is capable of being changed)of death?

My goodness, has the laddie been tipping the sherry a bit too much this top o' the morn?

I don't think we should forget that those guys and wese guys are in relation to the rest of 'consciousness.'
I think that, (Consciousness,) is evolving us as One and thus dynamically indecipherable.....damn, just tripped off my tongue.... and over it! No permanent damage to consciousness, I hope.

I appreciate what you say, Sherry. What's that hovering above your head? ;)

Buttercups.

Okay, we can each have a fluidity.

A liguid intoxication? You're too poetic.
Yet it shows your true colors.

Dear Ed, Sorry to raz you, but I have time to deal with, shall we say? Your meanings sometimes allude me as well as your illusive self and so I, confused and confounded above, really meant a "fluid intoxication" was meant by all, meaning "the One"? oh dear, luvs, me

Do you know, I think we, you and I, wheeze, have a fluidly intoxicated density after all. Gosh, I meant destiny.....damn sherry!

If you must swear like that I just might take my marbles and go home. And then, I'm telling Deepak that my proclivity to sensitivities has been tested. Are you friends with Diablo?
