How to stop mood making (part 2)

Max Simon - October 18, 2008

In my last letter, I spoke about the first step in moving away
from mood making by being real with your emotions. Now,
let’s get into the next part of the process – taking
responsibility.

First, it’s important to realize how easy it is to get caught up
in a story around your emotions. “I’m sad because that
person said something mean to me, which always happens,
because people are disrespectful (and on and on and on).”

Can you think of the last time you built a complicated story
around something that ended up sounding like all of
humanity is out to get you?

Poor you.

For just a moment, see if you can let go of the story and get
clear on exactly what happened that caused your emotions to
flair up. Look back to the last time you felt a strong sensation
and figure it out. Pretend that you are looking at it from the
outside in and objectively state the details. It might sound
something like: “I was hoping that you would call back but
you didn’t and that made me sad” or “I wanted to go out and
get dinner and you didn’t so I got pissed me off.”

As you go through this process, you will notice that
something becomes pretty darn clear. Do you know what it
is?

That’s right: that you are 100% responsible for your own
feelings.

It’s pretty easy to point the finger at someone else for how you
feel. But if you take the time to look at it (and I mean really
look at it), there’s no way to avoid the fact that it’s your BS
(belief systems) that are causing your emotional upheaval.

For example, it was YOUR expectations that the made you
sad when they didn’t call back and it was YOUR attachment
to going out to dinner that caused your anger.

Does that make sense?

So to progress along the path of moving from mood making
to authentic expression, acknowledge what you’re feeling
and take true responsibility for what’s coming up. While it’s
easy to say that the economy is causing your suffering or your
job is creating your stress, break the pattern of placing blame
on anyone else. It’s you, not them, that creates your reality.

In the next letter, we’ll explore how to use this knowing to
your benefit.

(As always, your comments are welcomed and
appreciated. I read all of them!)

Thank you for writing this, it's informative and practical. I have a question, how do you know if the responsibility you are taking doesn't take away from your own 'power?' For example, if you find a group or person who is selling a spiritual journey yet this version of spiritual journey does not allow questioning, i.e. in a sense it's a cult. If you feel the person's fakeness and it gets your blood boiling, how do you know if you're creating the drama, or you really do have a 'truth' that needs to be expressed to protect others? In a sense, is it ever spiritually the right path to call someone a fraud? I'm getting quite disturbed by the number of new age groups out there who are supporting a spiritual path without allowing questioning or discovery on indvidual's own path.

Best be an authentic fraud, quietword in my ear ;)

An authentic fraud? So someone who believes their own authenticity? This person knows their truth but it's fraudulent? The problem is... the fraud aspect of their enligthenment really means they shouldn't be leading others? Or is it simply not my place to judge others?

#3 I was tentatively mocking the two judgements, authentic or fraudulent, whether be of oneself or another. We can never be sure where we are going until we get there, and that just a staging post.
I grant that you and I must judge for ourselves, for I sense we are akin in seeing no value in being led. Neither would I wish to lead and certainly would not charge for sharing my own seeming progress or be charged for Life's inherent beneficence. I think our neutrality concerning the judgements others make for themselves will serve us far greater in our 'quest' than letting our blood boil onto others.
I grant that our blood may still boil and, that, I personally, go within to find the 'stoker.' It's a valuable energy that should not need to erupt through its 'capping.' That's me !

Blessings.

Thanks Ed
I get that... the question for me is how do I 'use' the energy?

So many questions lately and soooo few answers - :) I get quiet for awhile and then bam! the disquiet gives me a roller coaster, when I'd just rather live smoothly... nice calm and smooth... I may not even be 'thinking' per se...

Yeah, quietword, that question bugged me, even as I wrote. It's Max's thread and I would agree that meditation can lead you to it. From there it must unfold of Itself.

We are creatures of nature and, as such, live cyclical bodily lives, with ebb and flow and 'corrective' storms, even hurricanes. The big question is, as spiritual beings, are we able to ride them unaffected. Can we always position ourselves in the Eye of the storm? Can our lives work like a 'Charm?' I think they can......'without question!!' We must give the 'More' of ourselves greater credence and a chance to emerge.

'Infinite patience brings immediate results.'
