Projection and Internalization

Sarah Maria - October 30, 2008

People often ask me what causes Negative Body Obsession, this all-too-prevalent condition where people do not feel thin enough, beautiful enough, or attractive enough. They have some belief that their bodies are just not quite right, that they are not ideal. They should be taller, younger, thinner, darker – the list goes on and on. These beliefs help to fuel the diet industry, beauty industry, tanning booths, and cosmetic surgery practices.

What is the reason for this gnawing sense of inadequacy and discontent? People are quick to blame it on the media, and I agree that the media does play a role. However, it is important to remember that we create the media. As a culture we have created the media outlets and information that we then consume. To place the blame on the media, as if it is somehow external to us, is to give away our power. We have created the media, just have we have created all images of beauty, and indeed the whole notion of beauty.

We project our ideas and notions of beauty out into the world and create the media and other images. We then internalize these images and conclude that we are inadequate because we do not look like an image.
This is a very interesting and rather amusing process when you begin look at it this way. Why do we project this “idealized” vision? Why do we then use it to make ourselves feel inadequate?

Ultimately, there is nothing inherently wrong with images of beauty. People are quick to blame advertising, but these images are powerless in and of themselves. The problem occurs when we internalize these images and use them to decide our self-worth. Ultimately, whenever we use anything outside of ourselves to determine how valuable we are, we will suffer.

Hi Sarah,
It is indeed unfortunate that most of the media in the form of Film, TV, Modelling are all mostly based on glamor and external beauty.
From my own experience, i can say that even i had these feelings of inadequacies about myself. The funny thing was, some fifteen years back i used to feel bad because i was very thin and ten years later i started feeling bad for exactly opposite reason, that is , having become slightly obese.
The way i could handle this situation was by doing couple of things like, doing yoga on a regular basis, releasing these negative thoughts through meditation and also practising the mirror therapy. For mirror therapy, which i do daily all alone, i would stand naked in front a mirror and look at my entire body without any bias or prejudice and start repeating to myself that 'i love myself, i love my body unconditionally' for a period of 5 minutes or more. These have helped me in a big way.
Thanks.
