The Man Who Changed the World?

Deepak Chopra - October 31, 2008

Wanting to change the world is different from having to. The latter is what's expected of Barack Obama if he's elected. The huge crowds he keeps attracting aren't looking simply for a new leader, or even a reformer to undo the bad things wrought by the Republicans. They are looking for transformation. This isn't pure fantasy. Sometimes history forces change right before your eyes, and when that happens the road forks. You can tinker with the world as it is or you can remake the world as it should be.

Obama hasn't given clear signals yet about which road he might take, because the ritual and theater of election campaigns force a candidate to spend a lot of time telling people what they want to hear. The last president who drastically remade the country was FDR, and yet nothing of the sort was expected when he ran in 1932. Roosevelt could have turned into a better Herbert Hoover, rescuing failed banks, restoring trust in government, bringing people back to a sense of hope and safety. Those are all good things, and Obama is poised to repeat them seventy years later. But if he does nothing more, the world won't change. While he attacked the basic problem of the Great Depression, FDR laid down the template of the modern social welfare state. His actions didn't immediately create prosperity -- far from it -- but they expanded opportunities for millions of people, stripped the old elites of their absolute power, and gave Americans their first economic safety net in Social Security.

I would hate to see Obama turn into a better Herbert Hoover. He could, and should, lay down a template for the next fifty years. It's no secret that we need to repair our image abroad, deal with Islamic extremism in a better way, open up global markets, repair our infrastructure, shift away from fossil fuels, and attack global warming with clear, vigorous policies. For many people, accomplishing those things would be a page-tuner after eight years of reactionary neoconservatism. But they wouldn't change the world.

What would is the following:
-- Get America off a war footing. We've been armed for imminent war since 1945.
-- Develop an economy that makes a profit on peace. At present, we are dependent on arms and arms dealing.
-- Get the rest of the world not to fear us.
-- Take the side of the world's dispossessed people, who only now are seeing the possibility of a decent life in India, China, southeast Asia, and much of Russia.
-- Bring humanity and humane conditions to all of Africa.
-- Stop dividing the world along ideological lines and religious factions. We need to be a secular leader friendly to all sides.
-- Speed up nuclear disarmament until all weapons stockpiles are gone in this generation.

I hope Obama is thinking along these lines, because if he isn't, the best he can hope for is a prosperous interval, like the Clinton years, while the underlying militarism and religious fractures fester. Two presidents -- Lincoln and FDR -- heeded history's call with the utmost foresight, never compromising their vision. The difference here is that we aren't facing civil war or economic ruin. America has an opportunity to change the world through free choice, by looking at what would be best rather than what has always worked.

Happy Halloween....

Trying to think of something macho....

Oh well....

watch out for ghosts and gobbledygook!!

:)

Neither American conservatives or liberals never saw an international problem they did not think they could, and did, murder.

We spend as much as the entire rest of the world on the ways of war, and did you hear the crowd at Palin's rally when she lied and said Obama would cut our "defense" spending by a third: they collectively gasped like somebody had just kidnapped their children!

Until America forsakes our war-making ways, peace in this world shall never be possible. The only problem: The Complex will murder us before they ever stop making their cluster bombs, aircraft carriers, and remote control murdering technology.

But the good thing if Obama gets elected hopefully this will start a civil war!

Yeah baby!

I recently came across a saying, where exactly I couldn't recall now, that says 'To dream is to stay awake, and to stay awake is to see the dawn first'

To make lasting changes I suppoe Obama or who ever attempts it, might have to come up with plans which are longer than their terms and may not necessarily give susbstantial benefits or evidence of cahnge in the short run, perhaps not even within their terms of office.

To complicate it even further is the fact that such a leader has to be elected by a population who are accustomed to have 'a good nights sleep'(regardless of their socio-ethnic- cultural-religious and economic origins) wihtout having to worry about the dawn or the next day for that matter as sun sure will rise from the east and are looking for a leader who could ensure that such priviledges and comforts are ensured. Not to mention the other skinny-fractions of the population (cOugh cOugh)

As far as the East is concerend Halloween is yesterday and yet another day and a month has dawned regardless of the massess were awake at the break of it or not and we could only wait another seven days and see how the masses gonna vote this time around ...

~ R ~

Hey Craig:

Either way I smell civil war on the wind.

With all due respect, Deepak, you're whistling in the dark. All of what you'd like to see accomplished:

(a) takes time
(b) takes power
(c) takes consensus
(d) takes money

a... To have time, we have to work on the economy and the environment.
b... We've been losing power, and if things are to become healthy around the world, we need to continue to do so.
c... To have consensus takes more time, and less power, and more money.
d... To have money, we have to work on the economy and the environment.

Obama can serve for eight years at the most. His influence will be felt if he can lay down methods for us to achieve economic and environmental health. All the items in his plans serve those two ends one way or another.

The man is human. Lets let him remain so. Very few people are expecting him to be a savior of any kind. But your blog seems to imply that you think he could be, and that we want him to be. Well, we don't want him to be. One of the essential elements that makes this country work is that it's a legal and logistical improbability for us to have a savior as the leader of this country. And thank God for it.

What Obama is that's new is someone who thinks like we do, and has the will to create consensus, lead, and put ideas into action. Our ideas. That is why he says it's about us. He's so right. It is we who have to do this work, not Obama. He can lead, but he is leading us. And when he's out of office, should he really make it in, we will still be here, with the same problems, more or less. He will have achieved a lot if he has made our problems less, once he's out of office. He can do that with clear vision, strong communications, a fire inside himself that he shares with others, and so on, so we all get off our respective behinds and put our shoulders against the juggernaut of modern life. He will achieve something if he can teach us a form of working zazen by example. He's already doing it. This is why he's exciting, in his quiet way. It ain't his words. It's his ability to motivate people to act that's special. It's his spirit and his ability to share some of that with others.

Me stupid republican!ME cave man!Uga-Uga!

Yes, these are your personal intentions and if you are able to live up to them yourself, then you might expect someone else to do so too.

It is of the utmost importance that if one has high expectations of someone else, that one first needs to investigate whether one is able to live up to them oneself.

Because otherwise we will fall back to that blame game we all have played up till now: put the blame on the other.

The whole world is watching this election campaign and the voting and many people in the world have high expectations of Obama. Still it will be each one of us that has to make them true ourselves.

I hope that this awareness will be present during the coming years.

Good luck America with this election.

May the most suitable candidate for this moment in time win and may we all be constructive together with him in the years to come.

To me, that´s the one great thing about America that redeems all its sins. Power erupts from the bottom. Political changes require a change in mentality not some "saviour-president"(live elsewhere for a while and you will thank God for that every day of your life).

Hello Deepak and Eveyone,

Well, Deepak, I hate to be outright rude but this blog of your's is the reason why you are successful in the spiritual/wellness arena and why you would probably be crushed like an ant under a shoe in the world's political playing field......where as our worldly politicians throw consistency to the wind once they get a breeze from the opposite direction.....you, at least, are consistent in your ideals, but, voters, when, it comes right down to it, are, as inconsistent as the politicians they elect to lead them....

it is fun...reading your political blogs, though, especially for our "homie repubs."....you absolutely brighten their days, sharpen their arrows and make'em feel........well, so self rightously republican....so, all is not lost in your attempt to make Barak Obama or his possible election to the Presidency....a "world", changing, "life" changing, "Nation" changing" happening....

your list:

What would is the following:
-- Get America off a war footing. We've been armed for imminent war since 1945...............if Barak Obama tries to disarm his Nation under his Presidency things would turn a tad bit ugly, if, you have any doubts about this...just dealing with trying to get...assult arms off our streets is like wrenching teddy bears from toddlers at bedtime.....tantrums of unspeakable rage...

-- Develop an economy that makes a profit on peace. At present, we are dependent on arms and arms dealing...........................is this really a possibility? I mean, what Nation is not making a bundle on the selling of arms to each other and to every third world Nation's rebel forces they can muster up...selling arms in our world is the male gender's strangely incestual practice of ego primping their egos...can't see them letting go of this practice anytime soon...either..

-- Get the rest of the world not to fear us..............................well, here, is one, I think, Barak Obama can do...I mean just look at the man....he smiles...he really, genuinely smiles, with his whole face...yes, even his eyes...are smiling....where Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/McCain...mouth's turn up at the sides...like they were instructed when they took their lessons in "how to show happiness and joy to the common folk," but the whole world hears the loud creeks in their cheeks when it happens...sruunchhhhh.....and feels their pain each and everytime the do it.....ouch...just imagining the Bush/McCain smile...

-- Take the side of the world's dispossessed people, who only now are seeing the possibility of a decent life in India, China, southeast Asia, and much of Russia....................well, he can certainly do that although I do not know how much good it will actally do them seeing that their Nation's leaders have the ultimate control over their well-being.

-- Bring humanity and humane conditions to all of Africa.....yes, he can certainly help to do that.....help being the optimum word here...

-- Stop dividing the world along ideological lines and religious factions. We need to be a secular leader friendly to all sides.................another area where his leadership could accomplish much in this direction since Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/McCain nurture ideological divide to further their special interest groups...

-- Speed up nuclear disarmament until all weapons stockpiles are gone in this generation....hmmmmmm, no, I do not see that happening at all.....and I will just say go back to the first item on your list as to my reasoning....

The republican's are leaving a possible Barak Obama presidency with so much upheaval, in, so many important areas, that, it amounts to the largest pile of sheet in the recent history of our Nation and I am more than sure that they are chuckling all they way back to their western states knowing, how, being, left so much to deal with, he, will, probably, not know his up from his down, until, very hopefully, in their thinking, at least three years into his Presidency when it will be time to run again for the next term of Office.

My take on a Barak Obama Presidency......he will do his absolute best with what he has to work with and with what will work against him as he actually tries to accomplish his goals....

He may not change the world or a Nation but I bet the changes he will make will be a good stepping stone to a better social/political perspective for everyone....

wow...it is Nov. 1st.....finally....we get to vote..and end this much too lengthy political campaign...

Here is what the esteemed older black dude thinks about the young sophomoric black dude (to put it in Gotham's vernacular), indeed his words belie his lack of any real accomplishment, yet he is propped up by Deepak as the man who would disarm America and others would magically follow, end fear, and throw in the complete extreme makeover of Africa while shooting 3 pointers all at the same time.

What did Hillary say about Obama, "All Hat, No Cattle"?

Buyer beware,

Ego and Mouth
Obama’s trademark.

By Thomas Sowell

After the big gamble on subprime mortgages that led to the current financial crisis, is there going to be an even bigger gamble, by putting the fate of a nation in the hands of a man whose only qualifications are ego and mouth?

Barack Obama has the kind of cocksure confidence that can only be achieved by not achieving anything else.

Anyone who has actually had to take responsibility for consequences by running any kind of enterprise— whether economic or academic, or even just managing a sports team— is likely at some point to be chastened by either the setbacks brought on by his own mistakes or by seeing his successes followed by negative consequences that he never anticipated.

The kind of self-righteous self-confidence that has become Obama’s trademark is usually found in sophomores in Ivy League colleges— very bright and articulate students, utterly untempered by experience in the real world.

The signs of Barack Obama’s self-centered immaturity are painfully obvious, though ignored by true believers who have poured their hopes into him, and by the media who just want the symbolism and the ideology that Obama represents.

The triumphal tour of world capitals and photo-op meetings with world leaders by someone who, after all, was still merely a candidate, is just one sign of this self-centered immaturity.

“This is our time!” he proclaimed. And “I will change the world.” But ultimately this election is not about him, but about the fate of this nation, at a time of both domestic and international peril, with a major financial crisis still unresolved and a nuclear Iran looming on the horizon.

For someone who has actually accomplished nothing to blithely talk about taking away what has been earned by those who have accomplished something, and give it to whomever he chooses in the name of “spreading the wealth,” is the kind of casual arrogance that has led to many economic catastrophes in many countries.

The equally casual ease with which Barack Obama has talked about appointing judges on the basis of their empathies with various segments of the population makes a mockery of the very concept of law.

After this man has wrecked the economy and destroyed constitutional law with his judicial appointments, what can he do for an encore? He can cripple the military and gamble America’s future on his ability to sit down with enemy nations and talk them out of causing trouble.

Senator Obama’s running mate, Senator Joe Biden, has for years shown the same easy-way-out mindset. Senator Biden has for decades opposed strengthening our military forces. In 1991, Biden urged relying on sanctions to get Saddam Hussein’s troops out of Kuwait, instead of military force, despite the demonstrated futility of sanctions as a means of undoing an invasion.

People who think Governor Sarah Palin didn’t handle some “gotcha” questions well in a couple of interviews show no interest in how she compares to the Democrats’ vice-presidential candidate, Senator Biden.

Joe Biden is much more of the kind of politician the mainstream media like. Not only is he a liberal’s liberal, he answers questions far more glibly than Governor Palin — grossly inaccurately in many cases, but glibly.

Moreover, this is a long-standing pattern with Biden. When he was running for the Democratic party’s presidential nomination back in 1987, someone in the audience asked him what law school he attended and how well he did.

Flashing his special phony smile, Biden said, “I think I have a much higher IQ than you do.” He added, “I went to law school on a full academic scholarship” and “ended up in the top half” of the class.

But Biden did not have a full academic scholarship. Newsweek reported: “He went on a half scholarship based on need. He didn’t finish in the ‘top half’ of his class. He was 76th out of 85.”

Add to Obama and Biden House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and you have all the ingredients for a historic meltdown. Let us not forget that the Roman Empire did decline and fall, blighting the lives of millions for centuries.

Hello Steve,

If Mr Sowell and his "ilk" :))(just live that word) are worried about Barak Obama's, in their estimate, lack of accomplishments, then, I would have to say there are millions and millions of Americans who are so unimpressed with the Bush Administration's numerous "accomplishments" during their eight year reign, and, so much, so, that they are willing to vote for "THAT ONE," who, apparently, also, happens to be known as "THAT UNACCOMPLISHED ONE."..

so, I quess it is not so much about accomplishing as it is about how the accomplishments have affected the well-being of the voter's lives and future quality of life of the voter's Nation, and, in this respect, it looks like Mr Sowell and his "ilk" are the worring minority....

have a happy election day, ruth

Shmuel, I know you are quite smart enough to not have to rely upon Prager, Sowell, and whoever else at Townhall, to write your thoughts for you.

Independent-mindedness is a hallmark American tradition; you must be new to these parts; that is ok though, all are welcome!

:)

Well said, Ruth. Amazing how some think that it adds value to their arguments(or lack thereof) to just copy paste someone's (young black guy's opinion) piece or quote Hillary to sow seeds of dissension.

Back to the topic...

It took Roosevelt 3+ terms and a world war to imprint the New Deal on the country.

I'm told those who hate Obama hated (or have been taught to hate) FDR and the New Deal he rode in on. So, I'm not sure those types can ever be swayed.

The Democrats don't need to fix everything now. We are in for a long hard road economically, and a much longer one trying to rebuild this country.

But Democrats have to show voters soon that we're on their side. If Congress bogs down in navel-gazing and turf wars and business as usual, battling Obama for the limelight, people are going to turn them off but quick.

Instead we need to see a competent, coordinated policy from an united government, with a president who communicates directly and honestly with the people. In the 30's Americans knew right away that FDR was on their side, and were willing to stick by him through tough times because of this.

On that note, I'm feeling a little hopeless in my area. Very beat up and masticated. I'll get over it, but I'm wanting out of Texas right now. Of course, there are plenty of blue parts of TX, Austin being the best known! The DFW area can feel extremely Republican, though the most citified areas tend to go blue.

I think Diablo mentioned this stat yesterday -- 23% of Texans think Barack Obama is a Muslim. I think I'm just ready to give up on people who choose to believe ridiculous, provable lies.

It's going to take more than two terms to straighten this mess out, & that is what worries me the most. I have all the confidence in Obama to make the best out of the next 8 years. My concern is the hammering we are going to take by the GOP over the next two years that may poison the well for the future Dem pickups. Yeah, in some ways the battle will not really have been started yet after the election on Nov. 4. The goal is not power for power's sake. It is to actually change our policies and reform the system.

Thanks Craig, I'll keep that mind, thanks for the welcome, and it's a good block on your part dismissing someone like Sowell.

Btw, what do you think about Obama not knowing that one of his relatives was living in the US illegally?

He doesn't seem to be aware of people's situations in his life.

But that's ok he will make it alright for all of us.

I expect him over for lunch sometime in March 2009.

Shmuel

Hello Everyone

First, thanks to Deepak, this is an excellent topic, one that is on my mind for some time, and I would like to share my thoughts on this with you good people at intentblog.

I am (compared to some) fairly young. I turn 42 early next year. My experience with Presidential politics includes Ford versus Carter upto Bush versus Kerry. These are the elections of which I was concurrently aware. Well, Ford versus Carter I don’t remember all that well, being all of ten at the time.

During each of these elections, I felt detached. Reagan seemed like a nice guy, but I disagreed with what he planned to do to me! Each candidate, of both parties, left me with the same feeling. This is what I, Clinton, plan to do to you! This is what I, Bush, plan to do to you! Whether I agreed or disagreed with the political positions of each politician, the planks in their platform, their philosophy of government, I felt like an observer rather than a participant.

I am, for a middle-aged man, jaded. I suspect that my jadedness is normal for a Gen-Xer. After all, we missed out on the radical sixties. We missed out on the weirdness of the seventies. We came of age in the ‘me’ eighties and the dissociative growth of the nineties. Our political life has been one of disconnectedness, a feeling that I as an American, am an observer of politics and government.

I remember listening to my parents talk about the inclusiveness, the challenge, of Jack Kennedy. I remember hearing them talk about the loss of Bobby. Of MLK. Of JFK. I thought the older generations unrealistically idealistic. Their belief that one politician can change the course of a nation seemed naive. I knew, or thought that I knew, the reality of politics — politicians do things to us, not with us.

During this campaign, I have been forced to change candidates. I was an early supporter of Edwards: his progressive politics were still to my right, but he came close. His inability to connect worried me and was his downfall (of course, I later learned that he was boffing his aide while his wife was battling cancer and my cynicism was rewarded (and I know my time line is off there, but this is an emotional - rather than a strictly factual - comment I am writing and that’s how I remember it emotionally).

I was reticent when I looked at Hillary and Obama. Hillary seemed an invitation to right-wing insanity. Her politics, social policy, government philosophy were too far to the right. Obama intrigued me and, though I liked his health-care ideas, I just knew that he would be chewed up and spit out by McCain and the press in a general election.

Then, during the summer, glimmers of hope, twinges of optimism began to stir. I watched Obama parry the attacks with humour, grace, and a sense of timing that pierced the attacks in a way that turned them back on McCain. I watched McCain and his sycophants bounce from clumsy attack to clumsy attack. But I looked at Obama as simply a liberal McCain, a Democratic politician, another politician who will do things to me, not with me.

While at a forest fire out in Oregon, while working, I began reading one of the Oregon papers. I don’t remember which one. We were near Medford, but I don’t think it was the Medford paper. The paper printed long excerpts from McCain’s and Obama’s speeches. My sense of optimism was reinforced. My intrigue was piqued. McCain sounded like the typical sound-bite politician a la Bush, Clinton, Gore, Kerry and Dole. Obama’s speeches, though, with time to read carefully, showed a man with an incisive mind, able to construct an argument in a coherent and logical manner.

When I got home, I began actually listening to Obama’s speeches. Thanks to the newspapers in Oregon, I realized that his eloquence had actually been hiding the content. He is not only well-spoken, but also a good thinker. Not only that, his speeches hit me in ways unfamiliar. He inspires. I also followed his interviews with Newspapers editorials, with PBS etc going back years.

Barack Obama is not a normal politician. Oh, no question, he really is a politician. His actions are carefully thought out. He deals and makes compromises. But, for the first time in my life, I see and hear a politician who speaks of sacrifice and means it. Who talks of what we can do together and means it. A man who can actually inspire.

I don’t agree with much of Barack Obama’s politics. His faith-based initiatives are, from both a constitutional and atheistic perspective, wrong. His determination to fault Russia for all that has happened in Georgia is shallow and confusing. His lack of support for federal land agencies is disappointing. His unwillingness to stand up strong for civil rights for gays is annoying. On the other hand, his tax policies make fiscal and economic sense. His willingness to view government as a positive force in business and finance is refreshing. And his willingness to challenge Americans — on health care, taxation, regulation – shows a willingness to trust America that is surprising.

My parents talk of the promise of Jack and Bobby Kennedy. A promise shot down in Dallas and Los Angeles. Many of the men and women of my grandparent’s generation (not my grandparents — both sides were conservative) spoke of Franklin Roosevelt in terms analogous to those used to describe Jesus. I used to think that the naivete was laughable.

It appears that I have found my naivete. I knowthat I will be disappointed in some, or even much, of Obama’s Presidency. I know that the radical right and much of the media will do its worst to destroy him. I know that, thanks to the fiscal irresponsibility of Reagan and the Bushes, he will be forced into unpleasant compromises.

I will be voting for Barack Obama and Joseph Biden on Nov. 4. And I will be voting, for the first time, with a sense of challenge, a sense of belonging, a sense of actual hope. It is a disconcerting and confusing feeling. My cynical self is trying desperately to dissuade me. Not from the vote. Under no circumstance would I vote for the Bushite race-baiting McCarthyite panderer formerly known as the honourable John McCain. No, my cynical self is trying to say that Obama is just another politician out to use me and my vote.

I don’t know which of me is right - the naif or the cynic. And I, at the moment, don’t care. Barack Obama has inspired me, given me hope, and, more important, given me a sense of challenge that I am a part of making America a better place.

It is amazing John, that's exactly what I'm doing, you are a smart guy. Sorry you live in Texas, that must suck for you.

I'm also sorry Ruth that Bush and co. have effected your well being, you only have a few more weeks and I hope for your sake that soon you will be on the road to recovery. If Obama wins, it will definitely be a mourning period for me, I'll give it the traditional 30 days and move on. It's one thing though to want to change Washington which most candidates in the past vow to do, but it's another to want to fundamentally transform this country and the world.

Do you agree with that type of ambition? Do you want to see wholesale transformation?

You have been very consistent about getting Bush out but I haven't heard you say that you want to see the kind of change that Obama stated in his infomerical.

Some say John that FDR delayed the recovery from the depression, but I don't hate the man. Stats can bear that out. Who told you this kind of nonesense anyway?

Yes, get used to it, the GOP will hammer away and hard, just like the Dems did. It's going to hard and tough for everyone, better get used to it.

Steve

Amba writes, "Btw, what do you think about Obama not knowing that one of his relatives was living in the US illegally?"

here is what I think, Barak Obama's family situation is about par with most of America....I have family I wouldn't recognize if I past them on the street, it has been so long since I have seen or heard from them.....and, I have family, I see all the time, and, some, I see occasionally, and, some, well, wouldn't mind seeing a lot less of :)).....

and, since, Barak Obama has family that were born in another Nation.....(that is different than mine, all family are US born, actually, that is not true, see, I have to stop and really think about who was born here and who wasn't)...... and that he would not be aware of everyone's living circumstance is not a stretch...

so, she is here illegally....well, now, her legal status has been discovered and maybe Barak Obama can do what most American families would do in this same situation...try to be of assistance....

ruth

Nice thoughts Ruth, but Obama has a crack team of super smart folks who can find out just about anything on anybody, you would think that perhaps one of those ambitious types would find someone out about his family and let him know sooner rather than from the press?

It just seems odd to me,

Steve

Like he didn't know auntie was an illegal, har har har, but her apartment building does look like she is living "in the hood". Hey, republicans don't care about illegals as long as they pick apples and clean houses so nicely!

If you have not yet voted Shmuel, remember: Gloria La Riva for POTUS! Citizens unite!

Is your name pronounced "shmull" or "shmell", just wondering, lucky you didn't go to a public school the kids would have been merciless.

Oooo you privileged ones . . .

He-he

Peace

Common brother Craig you know the deal with us tribesman, English name and Hebrew name, we get both, Steve and Shmuel

I won't tell you what Shmuel means, you have to look it up.

Btw, have you ever commented on Townhall or other neo-con blogs? I wonder if others here have or just call Intent home?

Shalom, time of Shul soon

Spencer, my man! You make me want to puke. How dare you. How dare you say that you are inspired by a Muslim turned radical black Christian? You damn liberals have damn near destroyed America. The 1950s were the greatest decade ever and you destroyed it. Kennedy and King and McGovern and Carter and Clinton began the destruction. Now Barrack Hussein O-banana-ma will complete it. There is no hope and no inspiration in the random lunatic rantings of this obscene charicature of a candidate.

Mark my words. He will be the worst President ever in the history of the world. Worse than Louis XV and worse than King George!

Well John, who started the Vientnam thing? Who expanded it? Who birthed Iranian extremism and sold out the Taiwanese?

MLK was a great man

Btw, is the same Spencer who used to blog here? If so, then hello there, policeman right?

Criag, it's pronounced Shmooel

"Btw, have you ever commented on Townhall "

AFAIK Craig and Divya (or is it Preity?) - and me included- check out Town Hall (and similar places like RedState and Free Republic) and will be glad to inform us about of what's going on on the winguttosphere so that others at Intent don't have to. (I will be glad to update with the latest developments and the sagging spirits and internal fights, if anyone is interested.)

Hi Steve,

you ask, "Do you agree with that type of ambition? Do you want to see wholesale transformation?

You have been very consistent about getting Bush out but I haven't heard you say that you want to see the kind of change that Obama stated in his infomerical."

from my #12.....My take on a Barak Obama Presidency......he will do his absolute best with what he has to work with and with what will work against him as he actually tries to accomplish his goals....

He may not change the world or a Nation but I bet the changes he will make will be a good stepping stone to a better social/political perspective for everyone....

Yes, the Bush Administration has not been good for my well being or our Nation's well being, and your being a staunch Bush Administration supporter, of course, would not feel the toxic effects, so, of course, you want more....but, yes, the toxicity has harmed, and, many, who supported in the past are changing to what they hope will be a less toxic Administration with Barak Obama....

time will tell...but, we, as a Nation have nothing whatsoever to lose in electing Barak Obama as our President......really, if you look at the last eight years and the pile of sheet we are standing in, now, we can handle taking an itty bitty chance on Chang without the world coming to an end and yes, without the world suddenl being TRANSFORMED.....

transformation because someone is elected to our Presidency or any Nation's Presidency....really, get real folks...

ruth

"transformation because someone is elected to our Presidency or any Nation's Presidency....really, get real folks..."

Ruth, that's the essential message from Obama, "We are the ones we have been waiting for".. blah blah blah

Frankly Bush has just about gone along with the Dem controlled Congress in the last few years Ruth, so you must be fed up with Pelosi and Reid as their approval rating is lower than Bush. Isn't Barney Frank a peach? They don't leave, so I guess Obama is the next one to go along with the 10% rated Congress and exactly how is that going to improve your well being?

Steve

It's wingnut John, please get us wackos straight

As John states Shmuel you know I go over to Townhall and comment when the inspiration compels me to, but I find their usual stuff (you know, death to all non-Zionists, abortionists, gays, the "right" of America to kill all unexceptional peoples of this world, blah, blah, blah) has grown to be quite medievally stale.

Shmoo el (hmmm, got an "el" in their eh, hmmmm). What no Curly and Moe? Har har, ok that is the one and only time I will make fun of your name brother; but I will try to find your name's meaning . . .

Don't forget to vote no to prop 8!

Peace

You child of Hannah you, don't tell me you are a lawyer, or, a judge, but if you are you are still ok in my book!

Arrrr

Steve,

well, a lot of Barak Obama supporters believe that what he states ....will be.....me, not so much...afterall I supported the less transformtional Democratic candidate, the one with all the politcal impurities and the sense of entitlement...Hillary, so, I am not expecting...great things...just your common everyday lefty, liberal, respec,t for our Constitution, and, very important to me...the sep of church and state...acknowledgment....Barak Obama is my second choice...and I am happy to give him my vote....and yes, I am glad that he is not as much a war monger...as your average repub...Hillary wasn't either....so I am happy about that...we are already two wars to heavy for my taste...

but you write, "Frankly Bush has just about gone along with the Dem controlled Congress in the last few years Ruth, so you must be fed up with Pelosi and Reid as their approval rating is lower than Bush"

this is too funny....who do you think you are talking too?..... yes, and so the story goes as written by the republican propagandists,..
Bush just went along with the Democratic Congress.....yes, and I felt so bad everytime I saw President Bush pictured standing with Pelosi and Reid handcuffed, with duct tape covering his mouth and blindfolded being lead into his Oval Office to do as he was told by these brutal Democarats....

Steve, it looks like the voters have rejected this story....next....

have a great day.....ruth

this amigo is not saying anything new...he needs to pull his head out a the sand...and breathe some fresh air..

hey amber...keep on ranting and spewing...dude

after all look who u are supporting....need i say more!

For Stan and Ambasteve.....

"The latest from North Carolina pollsters indicates that Sen. Elizabeth Dole is trailing even further behind Democratic rival Kay Hagan in a seeming backlash against the incumbent's "Godless" ad.

The race for North Carolina's Senate seat has become one of the ugliest in the country. Revelations that Dole spent little time in her home state over the last year as senator opened the seat for Hagan, a former state senator backed fiercely by the Democratic Party.

CNN/Opinion Research released a poll on Friday showing Hagan up 53 percent to Dole's 44 percent, the Democrat's biggest margin to date.

Dole sparked a firestorm last week with a TV spot accusing Hagan of accepting money from Godless Americans Political Action Committee, a New Jersey-based group that promotes rights for atheists and the separation of church and state.

Last week's polls showed Hagan with a slight edge over the incumbent. After a ferocious outcry from Democrats, the press and even some Republicans who said Dole went too far, Hagan appears to be increasing her lead.

After Dole refused to pull the ad -- which began running statewide in North Carolina on Tuesday -- Hagan angrily filed a lawsuit Thursday, saying the subject was defamatory. She also aired her own ad accusing Dole of breaking the Bible's Ninth Commandment by bearing false witness.

Dole fired back Friday on the airwaves with a new commercial that again decried her rival's ties to an atheist group.

Dole says in the ad that the faith of Hagan is not the question. The incumbent says the facts are that Godless Americans held a fundraiser in her honor."

I guess if one is and athiest or as the very republican Sen. Dole likes to call them "godless" Americans......there is something "wrong" with you....or "unAmerican" of you.....or just plain....less of a person if you are an "unbeliever"......well, it looks like the voters in North Carolina....recoginze that Americans do have the right under our Constitution to be "godless" and very American, in fact, very partiotic, at the same time....shame on you Sen. Dole for being such a bad example of a diverse leadership.

so, Sen. Dole....you need help getting your foot out of your mouth? I guess the voters in North Carolina are giving you a helping hand with that....

ruth

What is better for humanity, God fearing warmongers or peace loving agnostics?

“If people think God is interesting, the onus is on them to show that there is anything there to talk about. Otherwise they should just shut up about it”.
RD

RD sucks! He needs an ear trumpet!

Actually, he's got one, but he thinks it is a loud hailer.

As for your question, Michel ;) put them in a blender!

Rather than tell us he sucks, why not tell us why, in your opinion, he sucks?

Could it be because of this?
“I believe that an orderly universe, one indifferent to human preoccupations, in which everything has an explanation even if we still have a long way to go before we find it, is a more beautiful, more wonderful place than a universe tricked out with capricious ad hoc magic.” RD

Tell us why, Ed, why does that English man of refinement suck?

hey....there...godless dude....have you gotten lost on your way to the "we are godless we are one blog?" or are your trying to convert a few stranglers here at IB who "believe"....in the big G....just wondering... what's your mission statement? or in the words of the Chopra's....what's your intent?....:)))))ruth

#40 I did tell you Michel ;) with economy of wording, bearing in mind that, unless you truly meet me you cannot know what 'sucks' or 'God' means to me.

I don't 'live' so far from RD but that huge hedge he maintains around himself precludes him from ever seeing me or my meaning. I hear him shout through his loud-hailer but will he ever hear my whisper.

Hey Ruthie, you calling me a strangler!! Good God!!

The 'Devil' is in the detail, Michel. As 'God' doesn't exist I have to keep it 'short' You may think that's a tall story ;)

See what you started Deepak! ha!
And ALL stand in wonderment at what could POSSIBLY be the problem! A big LOLOL!

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could simply evolve to the level of human 'being' and thereby have intuitive discernment afforded the few who have done actual internal work necessary to be able to clearly see and feel integrity & authenticity in the candidates (without having to listen to all their 'canned' speeches filled with 'what you want to hear' crap?) and simply vote from this ability?

Wow! Think of the campaign money that would be saved! Think of the unnecessary, life/ energy sucking tirades/conversations!

To our intuitive knowing!

Well, I think Mr. President Obama should hire Deepak as an advisor and if not, then hopefully Deepak will continue to write and send his letters to Mr. Pres Obama and share these thoughts as they come. A good man is always open to wise words :-) Hey, maybe Mr. new President of the USA reads these blogs!
