Unfortunately Joe the plumber is an actual guy

Gotham Chopra - October 28, 2008

Today Joe was out stumping for John McCain, sharing his foreign policy expertise when he agreed with an audience member that an Obama presidency would result in the "death of Israel." Say What?

How the hell did this happen?

Mind you that the appearance on the campaign was an officially McCain sanctioned event. Later came Joe's admission on Fox News that he knew just about enough on foreign policy to be labeled "dangerous." Yes ladies and gentlemen, the GOP's strategy for winning the most important election of the last century has descended to this. Early on, "Joe the plumber" as a symbol or metaphor probably seemed like a good idea. But who made the call that Joe was someone who belonged on the trail? Bad idea. When did the McCain camp decide that this guy was qualified to serve as a mouthpiece for their campaign? Combined with the last few days rumor mill that Palin and McCain advisors are ready to go to war, is it any surprise that McCain-Palins seems headed for a real ass-kicking a week from now?

How bad has he managed his campaign? Think about it people, he is running against a black man whose middle name is "Hussein." That bad!!!!

There will be many postmortems in the weeks and months ahead about how and when exactly the McCain campaign collapsed. Personally, I still think it was his selection of Palin who is so wildly unqualified for the VP role, and increasingly became a drag on his campaign the more she spoke, that we no choice but had to question his decision-making. The fact that she's gone "rogue" (I love that!!!!) is just fantastic. Had it not been real life, with so much at stake, it would also be funny. Alas, the fact that her own handlers are so petrified of her going "off-script" also clearly says something pretty dramatic and telling about her readiness for the job.

On the upside, lost in all the hysteria of the last few months is the truly historic moment that seems to be looming. We stand on the cusp of electing and African-American to the presidency of the United States. Wow!

While I remain shocked that McCain has mismanaged his campaign so badly and that will ultimately be his downfall, the truth is when it came to his own "story," he never had a chance against the black guy. McCain's old war hero status, which while noble and admirable also has a "been there, done that" sort of feel, and could never really hang with the juggernaut Obama myth, which caught fire during primary season when he battled off another dynamic story in Hillary Clinton and never let up. The recent images from this weekend of Obama's massive crowds in Denver is a testament to the momentum with which he seems to be cresting as election day arrives. All signs point to "Go."

As I write this, I have every limb possible crossed and remain wary about any last minute "October surprises" that could throw things out of whack. That said, when I look at the landscape out there right now, and contemplate the likelihood that Obama could actually mess this up (or more likely his sidekick "Joe the Senator"), I am greatly comforted knowing that at the end of the day, Palin and Joe the plumber are working hard on the other side to insure an Obama victory a week from now.

October surprise?

Are you kidding? After The Lipsticked Pit Bull and Joe-Butt-Crack?

Holy Mackerel!!

The only October surprise will be if they can get their campaign jalopy through the rest of the month without yet more major backfiring!

Hello Gotham and Everyone,

I agree I think McCain picking Palin was the beginning of his end...the pick was just too far out in right field, couple that with his actions during the first days of the finanical crisis and he started to look more and more like a 70 something on the verge of the beginnings of senility. Truly, I think before these two events he had Presidential appeal if he had chosen differently, he, imo, would be a tad bit closer in the polls.

Yes, it looks like the enlightened, elitist, leftist, liberal, marxist, socialist who hangs with the terrorists will be our next President. Looks like Americans have caught on to the republicans scare tactics and are not buying any of it....in the famous words of Michelle Obama....after eight long years I am "finally" proud to call myself an American!

"...he never had a chance against the black guy"

Gotham, your chutzpah never ceases to amaze me.

Glad to see you are again a proud American Ruth, I hope it lasts a while.

Cheers,

Steve

i said his "story" could never compete. big difference. shocked that the old white guy couldn't beat the black dude.

I wish I knew Obama's story, but I agree he ran a fantastic campaign and McCain didn't, but it ain't over, may the best man/woman win.

Yogi-one #1:

Thanks for the jalopy backfiring image this Wednesday morning. Very comical!

Will you be joining the global peace meditation with Deepak this afternoon? It is an opportunity to fire us further into this new paradigm. Forward not backward!

Trish~~

Hi Gotham,

In the intentblog mission statement it says the following:
IntentBlog was started in 2005 by Mallika Chopra, Gotham Chopra, Deepak Chopra and Shekhar Kapur. We seek to reach critical mass with a message of personal, social, environmental and spiritual wellness.

So with this in mind one would think the following should not be so offending as to sensor or even ban the poster:

It is my sincere conviction that we must start doubting supernatural and paranormal explanations for things we don’t understand. If not, we will always have people like Sarah Palin in the mix of the political landscape of the United States of America. We will always have too many American voters too ignorant to make reasonable choices in everyday life.

You write about a rumour that Palin and McCain advisors are ready to go to war, this after Dubya went to war because God told him so. A war that thousands of young Americans paid with their lives and many more thousands with their limbs. The Iraqi casualties could be well over a million.

Isn’t our refusal to live in the real world a big part of our problem? Shouldn’t reality be part of our spiritual wellness?

Any type of response from you, Gotham, is very much appreciated.

yo flabs..

u keep hinting u are real smart....

and in self deprecating humor say u are fat and ugly...hehe...

now u are apparently inviting the emperor to lunch if u come to the PNW...suggesting...tongue in cheek.... u are well spoken and built like an athlete...really? hahahahahahahahahhaaaaaaa...suggestion....just look in that mirror...but dont scare urself...

While most of us here will welcome a landslide victory for Barack Obama. We should never underestimate the power of the Neo Cons to subvert the polls, the vote count in many states, and anything else they can manipulate including the computer transmission of vote tallies from rural areas. Acorn is a joke compared to these pros.

I was happy to hear that the Democrats have 5,000 lawyers keeping a close eye on the Florida vote.

I am also wondering why the abnormal bidding process of the 40 Billion dollar pipeline in Alaska, isn't getting more press coverage?

Regards,
Stan

Joe the Plumber's thinking about Joe the Plumber.
Sarah Palin's thinking about Sarah Palin.
John McCain's thinking about John McCain.

I'm thinking about that pint of ice cream in the freezer.

And that's selfless thinking.

Why, when I clicked on to this post, was there a *Yes on Prop 8* commercial (protectmarriage.com)
located between

Did someone hack into this site????????

Stan:

I'm with you on that one. The only October "surprise" against Obama that I have ever seriously considered, short of assassination, is the old grandpa, Bush Senior, once head of the CIA, calling out the big guns and covertly and illegally stealing this election. Yet again.

I'd feel much better if there were 500,000 lawyers in Florida, Jimmy Carter and his people an Un monitors monitoring the polling booths.

"...and UN monitors monitoring the polling booths."
