The Mumbai "terrorist" attacks are a clear message to President Elect Obama, us, and the rest of the world. The problems of the world aren't just economic....they are equally urgent, social and extend deeply into our homes and places of worship.
The Bombay attacks are highly symbolic in their location/s, organization-level and timing. And they hit home. I definitely feel the significance of these particular attacks personally. The violence was directed at the heart of India's financial system where my (our) friends hang out, my (our) colleagues stay when they visit India, and our companies establish offices when they enter the Indian market (the 5 star hotels Taj and Oberoi in Bombay have been the India office for many a blue chip multi-national corporation). The targeting of westerners by the attackers is particularly galling since it targets a big source of support and growth for India and it's democracy, philosophies and people. India is getting more integrated with the west and the global economy, and the attacks sought to strike at the core locations and symbols of this progress.
So what? Since change is in the air, here's the 2 key changes I'd like to see made immediately in our"war on terror":
1. Rename it in a way that reflects what it is. In some ways I think we have glorified what is really going on, by allowing this global problem to be named a "War on Terror" fought against Terrorists. Certainly the acts can and do bring terror into people's hearts. But why not (at least) try to take away this terrible power? There is clearly no moral equality in this war, and the battleground is people's minds and hearts (not a physical battlefield). The truth is these so called terrorists are generally pathetic (and often unlucky) losers perpetrating violence in the name of God. Calling their movement what it is will go a long way towards accelerating it's end, in my view...and also helping make it less and ultimately non-violent.
2. Acknowledge that this is not only about Islam and is truly global/multi-national. Violent Islamic fundamentalists are certainly creating massive problems worldwide, but the problems extend beyond Islam. In my (our) lifetime the forces of religious fundamentalism have risen dramatically across the globe in reaction to the forces of globalization, westernization and modernity....and many outside Islam are also perpetrating violence in the name of their God. Broadening the focus beyond Islam will, I think, help address it more quickly in Islam also...as it will remove the ego and pride barrier created by the perceptions of denouncing an entire (and majorly important and large) religion.

Thank you, Ms. Mathoda, for a sane voice. I would call them murders and treat them accordingly. Serial killers if need be.
All this stuff got me wondering about my own sensibilities. I would kill someone if necessary if they were accosting my daughter or dragging my small grandchild into a van. It would be of the moment. If the police got them, then the courts can have them.
My will is my frailty.
Hello Rayman and Everyone,
Rayman you write, "Did I mention I have a problem with these people being called terrorists? I do because this tag ("terrorist") gives them too much power...makes them sound too important. These are not terrorists. These are pathetic, narrow minded individuals who couldn't succeed in life (often for reasons outside their control, just like everyone else) and are therefore committing the ultimate sin - killing other human beings to achieve their own selfish goals"
I agree. I think they should also stopped calling them terrorists....sadly, I think they wear their terror proudly and we nurture it by the fame and fortune we throw their way whenever they reak their bloodshed on the innocent....we greatly enable our terrorists.
good evening all, ruth
Hello everyone,
A more personal question. Does anyone know Chhatrapati Shivaji Int. Airport and it's proximity to the terror affected locality?
Thanks in advance

Honest and hard working humans the world over are trapped between the devil and the deep sea. On one hand we have white collar educated terrorists, who have just brought the world economy to its knees.
No gory blood shed, but all the same they have ruined many a lives, making each day a nightmare, for some poor souls.
On the other hand we have this gun totting highly indoctrinated terrorists, creating mayhem and murder of innocent lives.
Spritualism I think can counter white collar and radical terrorism. It is not easy I know, but let us begin by trying to change ourselves first, start looking inward, before I tell others I should first change myself, and this is done by refelcting (taffakur in Islam)
Discussions and debates and blame game, will not serve the purpose. I am of firm belief that once human sprituality triumphs, many of the world's woes will come to an end.
Dear Asgar,
thank you for sharing your wisdom. Outer change comes from inner change.
Dear Rayman,
I would like to see people treating each other not with awe and fear and not with contempt, but with equality.
I would also like to see us all take down the barriers of our own egos which keep pointing at everyone else's violence.
This would be some awesome change.
The "War On Terror" is not working. It is not working for many reasons:
- "War On Terror" is basically a marketing/propaganda slogan, designed to justify massive military expenditures, extreme tactics like extraordinary rendition, and make Americans more willing to have their right to privacy violated by random searches, their names entered on secret terrorist watch lists, and the government spying on its citizens without cause.
- It fails in the same way that the "War on Drugs" has failed in America. These failures are that the war on terror inspires more people to become terrorists, targets the wrong people more often than not, fails to actually reduce the amount of terrorist attacks over a given time frame.
When terrorism has been successfully countered it has been by recognizing terrorism for what it is: crime. Time and again, crime -fighting models have been most successfully applied. Terrorists should not be treated as a political entity of some kind. It doesn't matter what the philosophy or religion of a terrorist is for the same reason that it doesn't matter what the philosophy or religion of a rapist or serial murderer is.
Those things are not the issue. The issue is they are criminals committing violent crimes. They leave evidence of their crimes. Their movements can be tracked. Their circles can be infiltrated and penetrated, just as you would a smuggling ring.
We have done this before. We successfully decimated the Mafia as being a powerful force in both New York and Chicago using crime-fighting technologies. We destabilized and scattered the Ku Klux Klan in the 1960s and 1970s using crime-fighting technology.
It doesn't matter if you are Muslim or Christian, Pakistani or American. What matters is if you engage in criminal behavior. Then you can be persecuted and prosecuted under the law, with out any question of prejudice.
If we are preventing crime, and prosecuting those who commit crimes, there is no question of whose religion is better or what nationalities are involved. It is simply going after criminals and stopping crime.
yogi-one, you express my sentiments. I was just thinking about the KKK and the mafia, as well.
Hi Ruch ,Chhatrapati Shivaji Int. Airport is quite far off from the Taj Mahal Hotel.
The affected area is southern tip of Mumbai.
If you can download google earth you will get an idea about the Geography.
“These are pathetic, narrow minded individuals who couldn't succeed in life (often for reasons outside their control, just like everyone else) and are therefore committing the ultimate sin - killing other human beings to achieve their own selfish goals”.
“The so called "terrorists" are pathetic losers. So let's call it what is is: the perpetration of violence in the name of God....and I think we will come up with more honest, effective solutions....and call these people out on what they are doing, and how ridiculous it is”.
“So let's start a more "real' dialog about the problem and how to achieve the goals we share mutually across the globe...”
Any suggestions on how that “real” dialog is achieved? Clearly might is right is not right and does not work.
To get to that “real” dialog may take a long time and involve teaching our children that tradition, authority and religion can be, and in many cases are, big hurdles for world peace?

Rayman,
Well said. Thanks for sharing your thoughts/feelings. Violence is exploding all around us. Here in a gang shooting at a mall. In another section of town a woman is killed by her husband. In another part of the world... as the same pattern resounds. Why are humans so sick and so stuck? How can we heal the wounds and pain and move on in our spiritual evolution? Love is the only answer.
Anger produces more of the same. Blame produces more of the same. We must find new "medicine" within ourselves and then dispense it to those around us. Sort of like the "vow" of peace that Deepak has promoted. Peace and love go hand in hand and is what our planet is hungry for.
