Reconsidering my decision to tune into the Inauguration

Rayman Mathoda - January 17, 2009

The US Presidential Inauguration is this coming Tuesday…and it couldn’t come soon enough. It is clear that the problems facing the US and the world at large are very serious and we need vigorious action oriented leadership with the public’s confidence at the helm in this country ASAP.

So as we approach the Inauguration, and in light of President Elect Obama having invited gay bishop Gene Robinson to lead prayers at Sunday celebrations leading upto the Inauguration, I’m reconsidering my stand on whether I’m tuning into this historic occasion.

I still believe the selection of Rick Warren for the invocation at the inauguration was a poor one, in light of the major recent loss the LGBT community has suffered in California with the passage of Proposition 8 (and generally during the last 8 years with similar constitutional amendments having been passed in 30 states). But I am also practical enough to realize 2 things:

1.The LBGT community is hardly likely to part with the Democrats in favor of the Republican party anyone soon given the continuing strong influence of social conservatives over the Republican agenda and party. The Obama team clearly understood this and so from their standpoint and given their objectives, selecting Warren was likely seen as a relatively risk free method of bringing more political support to the table.
2.The country and the world has more pressing issues to be addressed right now, and we have to prioritize and pick our battles. In fact, the country (and President Elect Obama) need every capable individual on the ground pulling their weight and trying to drive the country forward in the right direction

So I decided I do want to participate in history….and am now planning to tune in.

I think all of us need to give our new President a chance to make an impact before judging him. In fact, some judgment errors are to be expected as the team moves forward and makes decisions. I would even go as far as to say if we don’t see some (hopefully small) mistakes, it is a signal that our President and his team are not making decisions quickly enough.

Hi Rayman,

You are right, the LGBT community will stick with the Democratic party and they will also see the day their equal rights under the Constitution of this Nation will be recognized them.

I have stocked up on lots of other "stuff" in order to be able to tune out in the coming days, when I have had enough inaugural pomp, circumtance, and discussion. This is America, afterall, we tend to "cover" an "event" to death, in our news broadcastings.

Don't get me wrong, I am excited, for the Nation, for the Obamas and for our history, but our news coverage tends to take excitement and dull it substantially through repeated showings.

well, it is very close, two days, and bye, bye, Bush, and Hello, Barak. Good Morning, America!

ruth

Whew! I'm relieved!

Wah,wah, wah..now she's gonna pick up her toysand come back...

If i decided not to watch, because of Obama I'd be called a racist. If I decided not to watch because of Robinson, I'd be called a homophobe...

But...these little enlighted libs....pick and choose...and ...they...are just enlightened...

Rayman...when you first started posting here, you were one of my favorites, (not that that matters) but you have officially turned into a whiney ass!!

:)

Hey Skins,

Just bought my favorite adult beverage, enough for the next few days, whatever gets me through the night.

I have a question for Rayman. I understand when the Airbus landed in the Hudson and they were getting ready to rescue the passengers from the plane, the attendents announced "women and chldren first", now the question, why hasnt' their been a protest from the LBGT community re: giving preferential and some would consider chauvinistic treatment of women, letting them off first, implying weaker sex, imagine that, no protest and I want to know why?????

This is an outrage and yet nothing , not a peep.

Skins, I'm speechless

Take care my friend,

Steve

Har har har

Shmuel sure put your feminist butt in it's place.

Now brother Steve that is not very nice, you know those liberals don't have all their marbles!

"Free"-market, socialism; you know how profoundly confused they have been made to be from the start . . .

Arrrrrrr

Hi Rayman,

I see you have drawn the interest of our "homie" republicans, pay no mind, we tried, but as you can see, it was all in vain.

I quess it is because they, like their hero, are sooooooooooo MISUNDERESTIMATED!

also, notice, the need to call you less then flattering names, another, symptom of being sooooooooooo MISUNDERESTIMATED!

I say let's throw a pity party for all the MISUNDERESTIMATED...boooohooooobooooohooooo

have a great day, ruth

also, notice, the male gender and how supportive of each other they are.....awhhhhhhhhh, so cute.

Many people did not hear what openly gay Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson said as he delivered the invocation at yesterday's We Are One inauguration concert.

here it is below....

"O God of our many understandings, we pray that you will bless us with tears –- tears for a world in which over a billion people exist on less than a dollar a day, where young women in many lands are beaten and raped for wanting an education, and thousands die daily from malnutrition, malaria, and AIDS."

He asked God to:

"Bless us with patience and the knowledge that none of what ails us will be fixed anytime soon, and the understanding that our new president is a human being, not a messiah."

And, Robinson prayed:

"Please, God, keep him (Obama) safe. We know we ask too much of our presidents, and we’re asking far too much of this one. We implore you, O good and great God, to keep him safe. Hold him in the palm of your hand, that he might do the work we have called him to do, that he might find joy in this impossible calling, and that in the end, he might lead us as a nation to a place of integrity, prosperity, and peace. Amen."

it is kind of nice to read this simple prayer especially after all the hoopla going on and around "the great President-Elect Obama."....

let us start with one foot in front of the other and see how that goes...

"and I repeat...I hope President-Elect Barak Obama can bless his Nation with a leadership that can match the skill of an ordinary everyday American named "Scully."--Ruth(OT)

You know what?

I feel the hoopla around the Hudson incident is a bit much.

"Sully" the pilot is being hailed a Hero..ok fine. But the crew and the lot, being given keys to the city etc is a bit much in my perspective. I remember a bigger plane rescued by Air France in Toronto and all 250+ passengers were evacuated in under 4 minutes and no one got hurt. I don't recall the same kind of media frenzy. I think the Pilot acted admirable and performed with valor the duties that he was well trained and supposed to do. But the complete banality of the media and folks in raising the specter of this story well beyond it's level speaks more for the desperation of the nation for heroes and feel good "hollywood style" stories than the ongoing crisis in the credit markets, Gaza, Sri Lanka, the earthquake in Costa Rica, Deaths from frigid/naturally cold weather in the Midwest, and what the Bush Administration is doing these final days, which includes quietly pardoning more people, vanishing documents, and Cheney's office whitewashing 8 years of malfeasance.

On the other hand the "hoopla" around Barack Obama's inauguration is very much apt given the enormity of challenges faced by this nation and the significance of this moment.

Since the opening invocation by the Rt. Rev. V. Gene Robinson, Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire, was excluded from HBO's copyright coverage of the pre-Inaugural festivities on Sunday, here is what he said:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=kWWAnitUCw4

"Welcome to Washington! The fun is about to begin, but first, please join me in pausing for a moment, to ask God’s blessing upon our nation and our next president. ...

"Bless us with tears – for a world in which over a billion people exist on less than a dollar a day, where young women from many lands are beaten and raped for wanting an education, and thousands die daily from malnutrition, malaria, and AIDS.

"Bless us with anger – at discrimination, at home and abroad, against refugees and immigrants, women, people of color, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

"Bless us with discomfort – at the easy, simplistic "answers" we’ve preferred to hear from our politicians, instead of the truth, about ourselves and the world, which we need to face if we are going to rise to the challenges of the future.

"Bless us with patience – and the knowledge that none of what ails us will be "fixed" anytime soon, and the understanding that our new president is a human being, not a messiah. ..."

Whether you believe in God or not, the bishop's message is one worth pondering in a secular way. Replace "bless" with an internal exhortation of some sort, such as "Remember to have patience," "remember to be appropriately angry," "remember to be discomfited." Something else worth pondering is why the bishop's invocation was slated at a time when HBO wouldn't be broadcasting.

Obama: We'd always intended for HBO to broadcast Robinson:

"We had always intended and planned for Rt. Rev. Robinson’s invocation to be included in the televised portion of yesterday’s program. We regret the error in executing this plan – but are gratified that hundreds of thousands of people who gathered on the mall heard his eloquent prayer for our nation that was a fitting start to our event." -- PIC communications director Josh Earnest
