What struck me as interesting in the Aafia Siddiqui story is NOT that she is considered the most important wanted woman in the world right now - OR the fact she graduated from MIT a venerable American Institution, but the fact that the two news agencies sounded so divergent in their reportage of the story. It broke on Wednesday over the NPR (National Public Radio) airwaves – a small but intriguing story about the woman who is accused of being an al-Qaida operative, a fixer for the terrorist organization and perhaps one of the missing links in the chain of command in the 9/11 attacks. The mainstream media picked it up a day later coming up with an entirely different focus.

We played the first notes of a symphony, creating a love field woven with our own fragility, our deep recognition of oneness. It spilled in embraces, in garlands of smiles and kisses, to adorn the hidden Beloved who in silent song invited us, to become aware for a moment, of the unified field of existence we really are, and to rejoice at the infinite possibilities of creating from this vision field, a new world.

Everyone, whether they realize it or not, is in sales. Not necessarily as a revenue chaser, but each of us are eternally trying to influence others and affect outcomes in favor of our causes. A few years ago I read a great book called “The Greatest Salesman in the World". There are some great messages in this book relevant to people of all walks of life, starting with: “Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough.”

In 2005, 'integrity' was looked up at Merriam's online dictionary more than any other word. Perhaps this is a positive sign that America (and the rest of the English speaking world) is doing some collective soul-searching regarding its ethics and values. On the flip side, it might also be an indication that less people understand the meaning of the word, and serves as empirical evidence of the decline of integrity in today's world.

"During the holidays, we will give thanks for the important things in our lives. For most people, money is not one of these things -- at least this is what we would like others to think. We are after all constantly reminding each other that "money doesn't buy happiness." Economists aren't so sure.

Yogi Sellah, Krish, Desh and many others have posed how we can take the discussions that take place on this site -- around social rights, poverty alleviation, political injustice, conflict resolution, etc. -- to the next level. While we virtually debate here, do the worlds problems just continue to grow? Are we several thousand people, privelaged to have the time and resources to surf the net, just spouting hot air with each other. Does our discussion matter? Or, does it only matter to ourselves?

As Mallika noted in her latest entry on Indian Blogs, she, Shekhar, adn I had a great meeting on the vision for Intentblog. I suspect that all of us - as well as my dad who is on the road right now - have been scanning all of the comments to Mallika's blog to gauge people's thoughts, reactions, and ideas. I couldn't help but notice that one of them - Desh - was calling us out on the litany of contributors that we have added with very dispirit and (perceived) irrelevant voices.

Yesterday, Gotham, Shekhar and I spent some time discussing our identity and plans here at Intentblog. Then, inspired by Sudha Koul's post, I spent some time surfing the internet trying to figure out how we are different from other South Asian blogs, what is a South Asian blog, and why do we call ourselves one. Here are some random thoughts...

Why stop at just this: US SOLDIERS REMPRIMANDED FOR BURNING BODIES? I mean come to think of it the administration and armed forces may as well come out and say it now: this whole War on Terrorism and the way its been handled has been in pretty bad taste and now we have precedent for dealing with it.

The good news is that on an appeal, the Supreme Court of India increased the sentence of Asha Ram to life imprisonment on charges of raping his minor daughter. The disturbing part were some of the words of the judgement such as ".. burdening (his daughter) with a 'deathless' shame as long as she lves". Why is it her shame ?

Inspired by GC's shot at those who haven't posted to the blog in a while, I went through the hundreds of recent posts to catch up and just get a sense of what we write about (and did the same with several other blogs I read). In some ways, this blog, given its enlightened sense of content, is an interesting experiment in thinking about what we, as people, think about...

In June 1964, Ahmed Kathrada, along with Nelson Mandela, was sentenced to life in prison during the famed Rivonia Trial for sabotage against the South African government. He was the only Indian among the famed Rivonia 7 convicted. Kathrada is a major figure in the history and shaping of the new South Africa. On Wednesday night, I had the honor and privilage of co-hosting a reception to launch Ahmed Kathrada's new book, Memoirs.

The war on terror is a complete and total assault on logic and rationality. You are far more likely today to find yourself the victim on a vehicular accident than you are to be the subject of some Islamist gone wild.

Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO spoke at Stanford's graduation in June. I only read this piece yesterday and found it interesting and thought provoking. He breaks it up into three pieces: connecting the dots, love and loss, and death. He finishes the lesson by telling the graduates to stay hungry, and stay foolish! Exactly what every college grad wants to hear, right?

"Go West, young man" was the slogan heard all over the eastern seaboard of the U.S. a hundred years back. The same refrain, with or without implied gender bias, is heard in many Third World countries today.
Are we to infer that history repeats itself? Or that the India or Ghana or Philippines of today resemble the America of the last century? Not at all.
