Anand Jon and Vijay Taneja Sentenced to Jail

posted by Ayesha Hakki on November 20, 2008 at 02:40 PM

Last week, two relatively well-known names in the South Asian community made headlines. Not in the good sense that we all wish to hear, but rather in a more obscure sense. Person number one: Anand Jon was sentenced to 67 years in prison for alleged multiple counts of sexual misconduct with underage girls. Person number two: Vijay Taneja, the name responsible for every major Bollywood show in the US plead guilty to a $33 million mortgage fraud, one of the largest in history.

Everybody has a right to tell a story, make a movie etc. I agree. Good bad ugly pretty long short whatever. I agree. Even if the good guy has to die as there is no place for him in this bad bad world.(even though i dont agree) Even if the story is somebody elses. Even if they want to drag a half hour plot into a two hour film. Even if the directors eye sees nothing but filth and squalor, shit and vomit which he tries to pass off as art. Even if they want to pump it with clichés and the script is full of gaping holes. Even if they are making a copy and not revealing the source.

How to Approach Religion: Laugh and Laugh Again

posted by Intent on June 18, 2008 at 05:16 PM

An article in the Washington Post On Faith Section in response to their question about the controversy over the movie the Love Guru.

The inability of some religious people to laugh at themselves betrays, I think, a great deal of insecurity. What if God was a two-year-old toddler and you were his mother? You'd spend your day keeping close watch and only find calm when your child was taking a nap. But God isn't two years old, and he /she doesn't need taking care of.

Hollywood and Racism?

Spike Lee and Clint Eastwood: Dirty Harry takes on Malcolm X! Poking with a stick or let sleeping dogs lie? Which side are you on? Do we have to pick a side? Whichever side you find yourself agreeing or sympathizing with, one thing is clear. Either because of the high profile status of the two contenders or because this is an issue whose time has come - This just refuses to go away. Even after Eastwood asked Lee to “shut his face” instead of making such an issue out of it.

Spike Lee has refused to back down from his criticism of Clint Eastwood for not including black soldiers in his two films about the battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.

I hope that the underlying theme of "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" will speak through the stupendous set design and breathtaking set pieces. In visual terms, no one has imagined the past with such astonishing passion and conviction -- this is the most artistic film to come along that employs special effects on the scale of "Lord of the Rings" with enough intelligence to appeal to adults. One could be forgiven for leaving the theater in a daze, so overwhelming is the spectacle.

Does your Reality Include Diversity?

Does your Reality Include Diversity?

I am often asked to review films and shows for various networks in Toronto and I have been monitoring the diversity trend in these mediums for several years now. One thing that has recently sparked me is that the reality genre that is prominent in the North American market is still to accurately reflect the world we live in. Why is that these shows never seem to have more then one or two cultural groups represented in their programs? Is this not the best opportunity for the major networks to embrace and reach out to these markets?

THE RISING invited to Locarno International Film Festival

Aamir Khan's THE RISING has been invited to the Locarno International Film Festival.

This movie is being looked foward too as it is Aamir's first release in almost 4 years, and - no Bollywood film would be complete without this - the "behind the scenes" drama associated with the film.

One of the ventures I have been involved in for the last few years is the creation of a new television network called Current that was co-founded by former vice president Al Gore. The network is launching August 1 and today I'm helping to tape some of the initial programming when the network hits.

Did Someone Say Bollywood?

Over the past few months I have had the rare opportunity to sit and chat with some of Indias most eloquent and respected film artists. Though there have been many common themes to the conversations (which I will write about later), one thing that came up consistently was the backlash towards the word Bollywood. Respected actress Shabana Azmi mentioned to me that she felt it was a pejorative word and implies certain homage to western cinema that is not really needed.

Bollywood Babies

Most evenings, at some point or another, the Bollywood movies come on in our house. Tara, who is now 3 1/2 years old dresses up in the lehngas that her grandmother brings from India, and dances around, hips shaking, eyes sparkling, shoulders moving up and down. Today, Leela (almost one) officially joined her in her dance. She watched the songs with fascination -- her stout little legs bouncing up and down. I love Bollywood for all the fun it brings into our house.

If anyone has been following the Film trades, it is not a secret that seasoned Canadian filmmakers are set to have a big year in 2005 as 2 of them have already been celebrated via The Cannes Film Festival. Mohit's First Post - Sarkar Anyone?

Ram Gopal Varma has one of those rare abilities to tie in his influences and environment to churn out films that are both timely and unique. Paying direct homage to Coppola’s Godfather, however is a task that would be laughed at if attempted by anyone in the west. What he succeeds to do with this film is capture a grimy, violent and unstable underworld which is intertwined with natural politics and the law.

Rohit's First Post

This weekend sums up how much an industry half a world away (Bollywood) is hardcoded in my life.

For the July 4th weekend, I was visiting my aunt and uncle in the DC area. Most of the week before, I was in Atlanta visiting friends (ie. we partied a lot). I drove up 6 AM on Saturday, came home (I live in North Carolina), "rested", caught a slightly delayed flight to DC, and came to my destination - Northern VA.

Needless to say, I was exhausted.
