40 BILLION DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Warren Buffet just gave 40 billion dollars in cash and equity to the Bill Gates Foundation. He initially had planned on leaving the money with his wife to distribute but she unexpectedly passed away before him. He has begun the process of giving the money to Bill Gates to manage, who has very quickly become the world’s most admired individual in terms of donating to charity and ensuring the causes he donates to uses the money appropriately.

Taxicab Confessions

“Temasek Tower – Shenton Way – please,” I say, as I sit into the back seat of the taxi, either directly behind the attentive taxi driver. Within seconds, the newspaper comes out, or my phone gets whipped out of my pocket. Those words are surely to be my last communication with the person responsible for my safe transport from home to work on this day, one of the rare mornings I choose the comforts of my own private taxi over the city bus.

The Greatest Salesman in the World

Everyone, whether they realize it or not, is in sales. Not necessarily as a revenue chaser, but each of us are eternally trying to influence others and affect outcomes in favor of our causes. A few years ago I read a great book called “The Greatest Salesman in the World". There are some great messages in this book relevant to people of all walks of life, starting with: “Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough.”

Contradiction of the day - Singaporean Democracy

Singapore is a terrific place. The weather is great, the lifestyle is terrific. The government is efficient and effective, and generally acts in the best interest of the nation as a whole. But it really should be honest with itself when it comes election time; Singapore is NOT a democracy. Things are getting better – but there’s a long way to go and the way this year’s election is being run by the incumbents demonstrates the gap between where the country is and where it should be.

THE FUTURE IS NOW!

Friday afternoon came early for me this week. But at the same time, it feels like a Monday morning. I just made a major career move, and for the foreseeable future, there is going to be a serious blurring of the line that separates work and play, and my work life from my personal life. I’m going to be a sports agent!

Integrity

In 2005, 'integrity' was looked up at Merriam's online dictionary more than any other word. Perhaps this is a positive sign that America (and the rest of the English speaking world) is doing some collective soul-searching regarding its ethics and values. On the flip side, it might also be an indication that less people understand the meaning of the word, and serves as empirical evidence of the decline of integrity in today's world.

See below for the full list of top ten words searched in 2005.

Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO spoke at Stanford's graduation in June. I only read this piece yesterday and found it interesting and thought provoking. He breaks it up into three pieces: connecting the dots, love and loss, and death. He finishes the lesson by telling the graduates to stay hungry, and stay foolish! Exactly what every college grad wants to hear, right?
