The Art of Politics

I did an interview earlier this week for Harvardwood, exploring some of the current trends in the campaign and some key issues facing the nation. It's a 45min full-length, unedited, uncensored response to some live questioning and covers topics from the role the Media & the Arts in politics to the ongoing propagation of lies by the McCain/Palin ticket in this campaign.

I wrote this the night of The Speech. In the wake of McCain's announcement yesterday I think it is ever more important to think about the global implications of the decision we are about to make.

So my boy Baratunde just posted this video on his blog. It's from an interview outside the Clinton/Obama debate last week. The interviewer was a little rude at the beginning, but we made friends by the end. ;) Check it out:

An Immigrant For Obama

Friends,

I have never made a contribution to a political campaign in my life. I was born in a country where for the first 20+ years of my life no one could vote. I grew up under monarchic Middle Eastern regimes where the word "democracy" did not exist in our political lexicon. It was not until 2000 that my homeland saw the face of true democracy for the first time since our independence more than forty years earlier.

More Than Words

Oi meu povo! Long time no post. Recently I've been in a series of debates w/ people about what is going down in the Music Biz, the good the bad and the ugly of it. Here's some insight on one side of the issue - it's an article I wrote on Ghanaian Hip Hop that was published earlier this Summer in Leverage Magazine. Whether you’ve had any experience with AFrican Hip Hop or not, it should make for an interesting read…

We Two

I recently offered the lyrics to a song to a friend creating an anthology and it struck me that despite the music I've recorded, I've got tons of stuff that no one has ever heard. Here are the lyrics to a song I love, dedicated to those who have lived to love again. It's called "We Two."

Allo folks. So riffing off of Mallika's call for us to lighten up, I move that we "loven" up a little too. I just heard this GORGEOUS song by a musician named Kevin Webb in NY who is putting together a soundtrack to a book about loooove.

Homeless...

I know bloggers are all about the most current thoughts on the most current issues, but I am either old school or just plain lazy. In the interests of self-esteem I'm going to posit that my continuing appreciation for things I wrote sometime before today is not in fact reflective of my being the "worst-journalist-ever," (I'm a musician...sue me) but rather the start of a new trend towards archival reporting, making me in fact SO old school I'm actually "new-school."

Thoughts on Growing Up

Inspiration is a funny thing. It creeps up on you in the most unexpected ways, in moments when nothing had seemed meant to be but the moment itself. Inspiration can come from a sound, a touch, a memory. Sometimes its a smell that speaks of "home." Sometimes it comes in the wake of a conversation, or in the midst of a dream.
