Terrorist Attack in Mumbai

We are jolted again by the horrific news of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. No religion or nation, regardless of race and ethnicity, could ever condone the mass murder of innocents without forever condemning their souls to darkness. My heart goes out to the people who lost their lives and to untold others who have been left behind to pick up the pieces from this tragedy. As a Pakistani-American I have often enjoyed staying at the Taj hotel and have been welcomed warmly by Indians of all backgrounds. Having performed all over India with Junoon, including earlier this year, in Kashmir. tonight my heart is with India and its people. Your grief is our grief, your blood is our blood.Only together can we overcome the darkness of our times.

Remembering Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (1948-1997)

Long before 9/11 and the subsequent drum beat of a war on terror and talk of a clash of civilisations between Islam and the West, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Pakistan's greatest musical export, sang ecstatically about the Oneness of God and love for humanity.

Pledge of Allegiance Gets It Right

Many years ago, when I was growing up as a Muslim-American teen in New York's Tappan Zee High School, every morning during homeroom I would join my classmates in a wonderful ritual by putting my hand over my heart and pledging allegiance to " One nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all." Those key eleven words still touch my heart and mind and define the spirit of America.

God is Within, the Sufi Poet Wrote

Just over 300 years ago, the Muslim Sufi poet Bulleh Shah, while a student at a madrassa (Islamic school) in what is now Pakistan, asked his religious teacher this question: "What is the point of washing one's hands and feet before prayers if the heart wasn't clean?"

Three powerful currents will have directed the course of this social change: the internet, the war on terror and HIV/AIDS will have been the most important influences on the lives of 6 billion people living in the world today.
