Meet Vinay Chakravarty. He went to college with me and is a close friend of my sister's.

He has two weeks to find a bone marrow donor.

Since Vinay is a South Asian, the probability of finding a donor is best within our community. There is a staggeringly low number of South Asian donors currently registered.

Here is how you can help:

population 2050

Worldmapper.org warps world maps based on factors such as birth rates, GDP, and population. It amazes me how much more significant it feels to see a visual representation of something rather than to read facts and figures (which is why Al Gore climbing a ladder to show the rise of global warming in an Inconvenient Truth was an excellent touch).

Check out how fat India looks based on its population in 2050.

Mira Nair talks about her new movie, The Namesake, on Fresh Air. Early in the interview, she hits on what I've always admired about successful arranged marriages:

"It's an exquisite love story of an adult romance...of people I know of from my parents' generation... who are content to be still...who don't need roses and diamonds and hallmark cards and 'I love yous' and proclamations and public displays of love.

bangalore shuts down (again)

A strike over water has shut down Bangalore's IT industry for the second time in a month (last month's shutdown was due to religious turmoil).

Of course, the press jumps on a story like this as a sign of "how, despite a thriving tech industry, Bangalore is just not Silicon Valley". If a shutdown is what it takes to reach that epiphany, you deserve a cookie.

Unfortunately for Bangalore, recent targeting by terrorist groups might place the city of baked beans closer to New York in the global imagination.

Bangalore's issues may also speed the inevitable (and ongoing) push of IT companies to other cities in India. As if the gridlock on outer ring road wasn't enough motivation already.

speaking in tongues is not a funny time (just ask Senator Allen)

In Borat, Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (it just isn't the same if you don't list the entire title), Borat makes it to an evangelical church where fervent believers speak in tongues. When the mood takes him, and he himself starts speaking in tongues ("alalalalalala"), the movie reaches one of its most ludicrously funny points.

But, according to the NY Times, he is making fun of a real scientific phenomenon ("is not a funny good time?", asks borat)

racism is okay (as long as it's anti-bush)

This week, this happened.

So, my question is, why do we consider only one of these conclusions racist?

1. A white man goes to flight school. Must be a hobbyist. An Arab man goes to flight school. Must be a terrorist.

2. A British company is charged with managing American ports. Jolly good. They get taken over by an Arab company. Not Jolly. Bad. (because they must be terrorists).

If we want to get serious about our port security, we need to nationalize it. Like our military. Oh wait. Not like our military.
