Clothes for the Mind

written by Silence Genti,

Versace, Vuitton, Givenchy! We spend so much time wondering and gossiping what this celeb or that movie star is wearing? Is it a Isaac Mizrahi? No, that is a Viviene Westwood original, someone else yells. We spend even more time wishing that we could have those clothes. But, given the constant shootings, the muggings that are emblazoned in the newspapers and appear to be daily staple of the 24-hour news stations, we do not spend that much time thinking about what kind of gear we need for our minds.

In 1986, Mkele Mbembe was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from college. On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air.

Stuff for Sex

written by Heather, a member of the www.mindyourmind.ca crew

“I was 13 years old trying to get someone to buy me cigarettes at a variety store in the fairly good neighborhood of my city. I was approached by a middle-aged man with a car seat in the back of his mini van, who had exposed himself to me and propositioned me to watch him masturbate and in return he would buy me smokes. He was insistent and conniving with his words and behavior, I didn’t feel like I had a choice. I felt sick to my stomach and anxious, I wanted someone to help me but I really wanted smokes too.”

“All In” Relationships

Poker’s all the rage. Even some of our youngest users at mindyourmind.ca are familiar with the basic rules of texas hold ‘em and engage in a game or two after school or on the weekends with their buddies. Not sure which activity in their lives its replacing -in some instances its problematic, for obvious reasons. But that’s not the point of this entry.

The "As If" Zone

In 2003, mindyourmind.ca emerged from our belief that youth mental health was not being taken seriously. Suicide was the second highest killer of youth between the ages of 16 -24 and this age group also had the highest experience of mental health episodes. At the same time, we all knew that youth were not coming for professional services and when they were, the drop-out rate was staggering for things like maintaining medications. But for all that, there was little funding for mental health education.
